Xbox may still have unannounced games releasing in 2021, hints a new interview
More games are coming, but are they from Xbox Game Studios?
What you need to know
- In an interview on the Ion Lords Podcast, Jason Ronald from Xbox shared that not all games coming in 2021 have been announced yet.
- Jason Ronald never explicitly mentions Xbox Game Studios or that these unannounced games are Xbox exclusives, but speculation has begun.
- 2021 is already shaping up to be an incredible year for gaming, and it's almost certain that Xbox has some cards hidden up its sleeves.
- In other news, the Xbox and Zenimax acquisition recently overcame the biggest hurdle obstructing its completion: EU approval.
2021 year has already been a fruitful year for video games, and could be the year the newly released Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S hit their stride and truly shine. We already have a comprehensive list of all the major game events happening in 2021, where we expect to see announcements, reveals, and updates from all kinds of companies and on all manner of video games.
Now, we may have reason to believe that Xbox Game Studios, the first-party collection of studios directly under Xbox, hasn't revealed everything that's being released in 2021.
In a recent interview on the Ion Lords Podcast (you can watch the exact part above), Xbox's Director of Program Management Jason Ronald was asked what game coming this year has him the most hyped. In response, Ronald says, "Not all games that are being released this year have been announced."
While this response doesn't explicitly mention upcoming projects from Xbox Game Studios, or even that these games will be Xbox exclusives, it's still telling when the information comes from an Xbox team lead. Nothing is set in stone yet, but Ronald's comment has unsurprisingly set alight the fires of speculation once more. Will there be more releases from Xbox Game Studios in 2021 than we already know of?
Xbox continues to fight the narrative that their first-party exclusives are lacking in some ways with aggressive pushes. We keep an ongoing list on everything Xbox Game Studios are working on right now, and the list continues to grow. Microsoft's acquisition of Zenimax and Bethesda recently gained EU approval, as well, marking an imminent completion of one of the biggest purchases in video game history.
Above everything, Microsoft is pushing their value-driven subsciption service Xbox Game Pass, which includes hundreds of amazing games for one monthly cost. The Best Games on Xbox Game Pass is an impressive list of titles, and new games join Xbox Game Pass all the time. To get the most out of Xbox Game Pass and store all of your games, you may need one of the Best External SSDs for Xbox Series X|S.

That means access to hundreds of games, with more added all the time, for a single monthly subscription cost.

"Xbox continues to fight the narrative that their first-party exclusives are lacking in some ways with aggressive pushes." I wish they'd do it with an aggressive push that involved releasing games, rather than telling us "games are coming," for a change.
Agreed, but good games take time. 17 of the 23 studios are from just the last few years. That means before the purchase spree, they had 6 studios including their 3rd party publishing. That's miniscule. So it's going to take a bit to get first party output on track. All that said, I'm as antsy as you for some real first party games. But the future is bright.
It does take 3 to 5 years to make a game and the fact that most of them were bought in 2018 means we'll be seeing games this year at the earliest and 2022 and 23. But they have enough studios and teams to drop four high quality games a year
There’s no question that there are unannounced games set for release this year. PLEASE let there be a new Forza Horizon among them! What I really need is a bigger SSD card, because I’m on my fourth now, even though there are supposedly no games available, and as the floodgates open on releases for the Series X, buying more of these SSD cards and continually switching them out because people wanna play games is gonna get old pretty quick. I feel bad for people that need to delete and reinstall games to stay within the confines of their available space. There needs to be a better solution made available, and hopefully sooner rather than later.
