Foursquare

Earlier this year, Foursquare broke off their popular check-in service with the release of Swarm to all mobile platforms. Focusing on social interaction and planning, Swarm expands upon some of the core features of Foursquare, but it leaves a muddled message.

For a few months now, the company has spoken about a redesigned Foursquare experience, and that looks to be coming closer today, as a private beta has gone out to testers.

Swarm for Windows Phone is apparently right around the corner. Foursquare today dropped the first images of the app on their blog, noting that it's still "coming soon" — just how soon we're not quite sure. Swarm has been available on iPhone and Android devices for a few weeks now, but thanks to high demand from users, will soon be brought to Windows Phone as well.

The official Foursquare app for Windows Phone has had a rough week. A featureless update released on June 24 seemed innocuous enough until users on the Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon had problems launching the refreshed app. The problem seemed limited at first, until a small patch update, version 3.5.8, hit the Store, reportedly fixing the crashes. That 3.5.8 update, nonetheless, is unable to be downloaded by those with a Lumia 1520, revealing an "Item not available" message.

Last week Foursquare announced Swarm, its new app for checking in. That's right. Foursquare is pulling out the check-in component and building a standalone app around that experience. Foursquare has announced that they're going to be spinning off a new app this summer called Swarm. While Foursquare has been used for sharing where you are for years, Swarm aims to facilitate meet-ups with friends more easily by letting you broadcast where you're going next and what your friends' plans are. Meanwhile, the original Foursquare app will be changing a little bit to be more focused on venue discovery and reviews.

It’s been a long time since the official Foursquare app for Windows Phone was refreshed. In fact, we can go all the way back to October 2013. What’s funny is reading that article, we mention how the previous update to that one was in June. Needless to say, this app don’t get a lot of love.

Version 3.1.4.5 is now live in the Store, up from 3.1.3.0.  Like usual, there’s no changelog on board, though we’ve been tinkering with it all day and have noticed at least a couple of changes.

Microsoft has just invested 15 million dollars into Foursquare, the location-based social network. Not only has it just invested a boatload of cash, but it also picked up a multi-year license contract to data. That data will become increasingly useful in Microsoft’s Bing platform and for Windows Phone. Is this the result of talks between the two companies that started last summer?

It’s been awhile since the official Foursquare app for Windows Phone had an update. In fact, it was way back in June when we last saw some minor bug fixes come to the popular checkin app. Since then, we’ve also seen the Windows 8 version launch with high praise from users.

This morning, version 3.1.3.0 has landed and while it brings a few changes to Windows Phone 8 users (more on the below), from reader tips we've received, the Windows Phone 7.x version now has the new UI. (We haven’t been able to verify since we’re out of town, but a few of you tipped us on that fact).

Microsoft has never really had a strong hand in the social network cookie jar; Windows Live spaces and Socl can both be regarded as failures in comparison to the big dogs like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. According to Bloomberg New Tech Reporter, Dina Bass, the company may be looking to change that as she reported that "Mcrosoft talks with Foursquare about a strategic investment are said to be at an advanced stage".
