Top Rated Windows Phone Photography Apps

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Windows Phone Photography Apps

Seeing that May is National Photo Month here in the States, we decided to turn our sights on Windows Phone photography apps with this week's roundup.

The native Windows Phone camera app does a nice job of things, as does the Nokia Camera app for those sporting a Nokia Lumia Windows Phone. We will touch base on a few of the top rated photography apps that offer you an alternative to these two camera apps that will not only let you capture images but also edit them as well.

We've watched these four apps develop from their initial release to becoming rather capable Windows Phone photography apps. While our seasoned Windows Phone users may already be familiar with these titles, our newer users may not be and we'll dig a little deeper with this week's roundup to give those looking for a photo app option a better feel for things.

Every week Microsoft releases app savings to the Windows Phone Store in the form of their Red Stripe Deals. Three apps are yours to claim if you’re up for saving a few bucks. And the majority of the time these apps (or games) are ones you’d probably want anyways. This week we’ve got Paper Racer, Mirror’s Edge, and HDR Photo Camera on sale. Let’s check them out.

HDR Photo Camera is considered by many, including us, to be the go-to app for snapping high-dynamic range (HDR) photos. HDR photos are comprised of 3 or more images, each varying on exposure times, merged together to create a visually striking image. It’s quite the trend in photography these days and when done right, it looks great (when done poorly, it’s tacky).

Today, we have two bits of information to bring you, including the forthcoming version 3.5 of HDR Photo Camera, which should be on the Store in the next few hours. That update will bring many new requested features to really fill out the popular app.

The other is a project that involves strapping a Nokia Lumia 925 to a hexacopter for some amazing imagery captured, demonstrating the prowess of the 925’s PureView camera.

Unlike iOS, Windows Phone doesn’t have any native HDR abilities baked into the camera application. Instead Microsoft left it up for developers to develop ‘lenses’ for your device – basically camera applications. So right now we’ve got two fairly solid HDR apps in the Store, HDR Photo Camera and HDR Camera. We compared the two back in mid-January, but it looks like HDR Photo received a nice update that could widen the feature gap.

As if someone was reading our minds the Windows Phone 8 photography app, HDR Photo Camera, has been updated to add post-processing and flash control to the app.

HDR Photo Camera still has a simple interface with settings that allow you to adjust the processing parameters before you capture the photo. With the version 2.1.0.21 update you can now perform post-processing adjustments for brightness, contrast and saturation.

We've taken a look at the two Windows Phone 8 HDR camera apps, HDR Camera and HDR Photo Camera. They both were updated recently and without a trial version for either, we set out to see which was the better HDR app between the two.

Both are designed to merge three images of a subject at varying exposures, merge the three images into one and offer a higher dynamic color range with the final product. This comes close to being a true HDR process and goes beyond simply applying an effects filter to an image for the HDR effect.

The Windows Phone 8 app, HDR Photo Camera was updated to version 2.0.0.15 today. Along with performance tweaks to address stability issues, the HDR camera app now has a settings menu and the ability to review the source photos used to create the HDR image.

The settings gives users more control over the capture parameters and a high resolution processing option (overall image resolution remains at 7.1MP at the 16:9 aspect resolution). HDR photos are basically the result of merging a bracketed image (same picture taken at different exposures) that creates an image with more vibrant colors and greater dynamic range between the lighter and darker areas.
