lumia 822

Last night at CES, we managed to chat up some people with Microsoft, specifically about the Verizon incident and Lumia phones. Starting yesterday, Verizon apparently pulled listings for their Lumia phones on the Verizon Wireless site. Granted, those phones – the Lumia 822 and Lumia 928 – are both aging Windows Phones to begin with, still, it did not look good for Microsoft.

However, Verizon is now saying that the reason those phones are not listed online is due to them being out of stock. Certainly the production of those devices is probably at an all-time low, and stock would be a little bit more difficult to procure versus a newer Lumia 830. The phones though are reportedly still available in physical stores, although local stock and availability will likely vary.

The Microsoft, Verizon drama appears to be continuing as the Verizon Wireless website has evidently pulled all Nokia Lumias from their website. The HTC One (M8) for Windows and Samsung ATIV SE are still available, so Verizon does not appear to be targeting Windows Phone in particular.

Verizon has not said anything publicly about its strained relationship with Microsoft over the Lumia line. Lumia Icon owners have grown increasingly incensed at the long delay for the Lumia Cyan and Denim updates.

Verizon has started rolling out Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for the Lumia 928 and Lumia 822. Among the other features of Update 1, the 928 and 822 owners are also getting access to Cortana. Better yet, this update will also take both phones onto the latest Lumia Denim software, which is currently pushing out to other Lumia phones all around the world.

For those on Verizon waiting for the Lumia Cyan and 8.1 update to grace your Lumia 822, Lumia 928 or Lumia Icon, there is more bad news to report.

Windows Central reader NOLATechy has noticed that the Lumia Cyan update page has shifted the status from 'Under Testing' to a new stage 'Under Development'. If that sounds like a step backwards, you are correct.

It’s just after 1PM ET, so the flood gates are open for the Lumia Black firmware and Update 3 OS update. We just confirmed that the Nokia Lumia 822, a Verizon exclusive, is now getting that update.

To check, head into your phone’s Settings and select Phone Update > Check for Updates. Users should be on Wi-Fi to do the update, as it contains an OS and firmware update.

Confession: we’re not huge users of the Windows Phone FM Radio, a feature that was omitted when Windows Phone 8 launched last year due to the drivers needing to be re-written. Because of that, we didn’t miss it much, though like you, we always appreciate having things on our phones, even if we don’t use them.

But some of you 'FM radio fans' are certainly quite die hard about it and so when the Verizon Nokia Lumia 928 received the Amber + GDR2 update last week, the missing radio feature (which the update was supposed to bring), raised some eyebrows (and ire).

Update 1PM ET: Seems like Nokia is on the ball as Verizon has thrown the switch for the Lumia 822. Go check for your update now: Settings > Phone Update > Check for update. We can also confirm FM Radio and Group text is included.

If you’re on Verizon and waiting for the Amber firmware and GDR2 OS updates for your Nokia Lumia 822, fear not as it should be headed to your device real soon.

Yesterday, Nokia updated their site from "waiting for approval" to "coming soon" and a tipster named WP8addict in our forums noted that indeed, it has been cleared by Verizon yesterday.

We’re getting a few reports in today that Verizon has begun rolling out some tiny firmware updates for their HTC 8x and Lumia 822 smartphones.  Indeed we fired up an 822 to be greeted with a small update that took less than 5 minutes to install.

So what’s news? Well, this appears to be a very, very small update meant to be a quick fix for some nagging issues. We say that only because your radio, firmware and OS versions will not change with these updates. That tells us that this is basically a firmware patch of some sorts, meant more for tweaks than new features.

Good news for those on Verizon sporting the Nokia Lumia 822 and who were wondering when your OS update was coming. We are told that update is now live for your device, boosting the OS to version 10211 in addition to adding new firmware to the mix. The rollout began at 10am PT/1PM ET.

Build 10211 of Windows Phone 8 aka ‘Portico’ adds all sorts of smaller but essential new features to the OS, including persistent Wi-Fi, SMS call reject, multiple inbox deletions for text messages, stability improvements and more...

The Lumia 822 (or Lumia 820 for those of us outside the US) is a Nokia Windows Phone 8 device that sits comfortably next to the Lumia 920, albeit with a few features missing from the specifications sheet. The smartphone is exclusive to Verizon and the US mobile operator has also taken the opportunity to launch a red version of the device for Valentine's Day. This colour, along with grey are currently both sold out.

What better way to say, "I love you," than with a Windows Phone? Verizon will reportedly be offering their Nokia Lumia 822 in red and for under $50. The already available black, grey and white models sell for $49.99 with a two-year contract, so we likely won't see a price drop. No precise date has been given yet for he red Lumia 822, so keep an eye out for it.

We haven’t talked much about the Verizon Lumia 822, the customized Nokia 820 that the massive US carrier picked up a few months ago. The phone seems to have done quite well as we even know a few previous Android users to pick one up. But with the impending launch of Samsung’s entry-level Odyssey, it looks like Nokia is trying to get ahead by cutting its price from $49 to free on contract.

Heading to Verizon’s website we can now see the lower price, which evidently dropped somewhat recently (or we missed it). By comparison, the HTC 8X with its high resolution display (and arguably nicer aesthetics) fetches for $99 on contract.

Best Buy is offering the Verizon Lumia 822 (a version of the Lumia 820) to new customers at just $49.99 when taken out with a 2 year plan. The price undercuts Verizon's own pricing at $150 with a $50 MIR (mail-in rebate). The retailer currently has the same handset priced at $99 online, but in-store (as can be seen above) the Windows Phone can be picked up for $50 off.

Verizon has just posted what was tacitly known already: Tomorrow, new Windows Phone 8 devices will finally go on sale in stores and online.

We reported last night how pre-order shipments had already left their facilities, heading to people's homes for delivery tomorrow. Now, Verizon Wireless has posted that the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 822 will both be available in stores tomorrow for immediate purchase. Of course like all releases, they are caveats: the grey Lumia 822 and red 8X will only be available online...
