Capcom confirms Resident Evil Veronica remake is fully third-person
After many years, the last game of Resident Evil's fixed-camera era, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, is finally getting a much-needed remake, and it will be entirely in third-person
Summer Game Fest 2026 kicked off with a bang as it premiered a cinematic reveal trailer for Resident Evil Veronica, a long-awaited remake of one of Resident Evil's more narratively significant chapters, Resident Evil: Code Veronica.
This got Resident Evil fans clamoring to know how this remake will change the original Code Veronica aside from giving it a gorgeously, deliciously dark RE-Engine makeover.
Thankfully, Capcom has given fans a clue on what to expect as it confirmed in an interview with Campaign Mode (hosted by my friend and former colleague, Samuel Tolbert) that Resident Evil Veronica will be played entirely in a third-person perspective.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi has also stated that its gameplay will be modelled after the Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake. Plus, Capcom's veteran developers who worked on those titles will be working on Resident Evil: Veronica.
On a side note, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi mentioned the Veronica remake will be dropping the "Code" part of the original Code Veronica's title, as recent Resident Evil games have adopted either a single word or number in their titles, so they wanted to maintain consistency.
Windows Central's take
For those who have never heard of the original game, Resident Evil: Code Veronica (released in 2000 for the SEGA Dreamcast) was Resident Evil's last game in the franchise to use fixed-camera angles that helped redefine the survival horror genre for years.
It followed one of Resident Evil 2's protagonists, Claire Redfield, as she explored the zombie and monster-infested Rockfort Island in search of her brother Chris Redfield, who went missing after the events of the Raccoon City Incident.
This game was a pretty important chapter in Resident Evil's long-running narrative. It brought back classic Resident Evil villain Albert Wesker from the dead and gave him superpowers. Plus, it stoked the fires of his bitter rivalry with Chris Redfield that would culminate in an action-packed and climactic showdown in Resident Evil 5.
So I'm really curious to see how they'll take some of the goofier aspects of the original Code Veronica's story, like Matrix-style fight scenes, Albert Wesker getting superpowers, or the cringe-worthy side character, Steve (don't even get me started on that guy), and give them a more serious, darker tone in the same style as previous Resident Evil remakes.
As for gameplay, I'm happy Resident Evil: Veronica will be played in third-person, as I preferred that style of gameplay over the first-person perspectives seen in Resident Evils 7, 8, and 9. Although nothing will ever top the fixed-camera perspective of the Resident Evil 1 Remake for me because it is the epitome of classic Resident Evil atmosphere.
Above all, I can't wait to see how the remake will take Code Veronica's grotesque monsters and make them more frightening to fight without having the annoying tank controls of the original game holding us back from enjoying the scares.
Resident Evil Veronica is slated to release on the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam at a later date.
After surviving the fall of Raccoon City, Claire Redfield sets out to find her missing brother, Chris Redfield, in a twisted, dark survival horror adventure filled with love, hate, and madness.
