Diablo 2: Resurrected dropped a double whammy of surprises last week, with brand new content Reign of The Warlock arriving as the first new DLC and class in 25 years, and a sneaky shadowdrop of the game onto Steam. Some fans reacted emotionally to the completely unexpected announcement as many of us were just anticipating Diablo 4 content.
With the addition of a new platform, that means a whole new list of achievements to unlock either by new players, or veterans looking to prove themselves after double dipping. While it's not been long since the launch of Diablo 2: Resurrected to Steam, many of the achievements have already been claimed by keen players. Apart from one, the hardest acheivement on the list, "Reach Level 99 with a Hardcore Character."
One for the hardcore, quite literally.
The achievement, cheekily captioned "I'm gonna do what's called a pro gamer move" is not one for the faint hearted, as it requires you not only reach the maximum level in the game, but that you do so without dying.
To put it in perspective, reaching maximum level in Diablo 2: Resurrected is nowhere near as straightforward and speedy as in Diablo 3 and 4. To reach level 99 you'd need to play anything between 120 to 400 hours, dependent on skill and if you are levelling alone or as part of a group. Many Diablo 2 players never reach max level at all, let alone doing it in Hardcore which requires a more defensive playstyle. So it's no surprise that this achievement is so far unclaimed, though I am impressed there are already some people that have completed the game on Hell difficulty with every class (0.1%) and have managed to reach level 99 on a standard character.
It will be interesting to see when this final achievement gets claimed and if the person who does it shares their strategy/build on social media, I know I would be telling my great children and passing the story down the generations if I was that skilled at the game!
Diablo 2
Diablo 2 is doing well on Steam right now considering it's age and availability on other platforms, in fact more people are playing the over 2 decade old game than Diablo 4 at time of writing.
Of course the numbers shown are only a very small piece of the picture as Blizzard games have a much larger playerbase on Battle.net and console, but I for one am glad it launched immediately Steam Deck verified as it looks beautiful on the OLED console and makes for a perfect handheld game.
We sat down with the developers to chat all things Diablo 2: Reign of the Warlock and how the team wanted to bring in new players while respecting and honoring the long term players, and I think they've done just that.
