Revealed at the Xbox Showcase in 2022, as an unnamed project, OD was announced alongside news that Kojima was partnering with Xbox on a cloud-powered game. Not much was known about the project for a long time, and Kojima Productions kept the details tightly under wraps.

Thanks to a recent interview with ananweb, and reporting from automaton-media, we now have a few more details on what to expect — or rather, what not to expect?

What Kojima said about OD in the recent interview

In an interview with ananweb, a Japanese magazine, Kojima was asked about OD, and his response gave us a clearer sense of the project’s ambition. He said, "I can’t say exactly what it is yet, nor do I know if it will work out."

He then described OD as something completely different from traditional horror games.

As long as you watch the trailer, you may think it’s normal horror, but it’s still unprecedented.

Kojima also compared OD to his earlier work. He explained that although Metal Gear and Death Stranding were inventive, both were still grounded in familiar gameplay systems.

For those looking for clues, Kojima noted that the Knock trailer contains hints about how the game actually functions. “We’ve packed the trailer full of hints, so if you keep thinking about it, you might figure it out.”

It will be interesting to see how OD comes together and how Kojima executes on these ideas, especially since he openly acknowledges that he is unsure whether the concept will even work. That uncertainty alone is likely to excite fans who enjoy seeing him experiment with new forms of storytelling and design.

You can read the full interview here, but it is translated from Japanese to English, so some inaccuracies are to be expected.
