What you need to know

  • GoldenEye 007 is a First-Person Shooter developed by Rare for Nintendo 64, based on the 1995 James Bond movie, GoldenEye.
  • A list of Xbox achievements has been leaked for Goldeneye 007, hinting at a possible Xbox release for the classic title.

Back in 1997, the videogame developer Rare, known for classic titles such as Donkey Kong Country, Banjo Kazooie, Killer Instinct, Battletoads, Sea of Thieves, and Conker's Bad Fur Day, released a videogame tie-in to the James Bond franchise — GoldenEye 007. It was a First-Person Shooter released for the Nintendo 64, and it is based on the 1995 James Bond movie, GoldenEye. This game was critically acclaimed for pushing the graphical capabilities of the Nintendo 64, its intuitive gunplay and stealth gameplay, and a competitive four-player deathmatch mode that was ahead of its time.

Now it appears the classic title will be coming to Xbox consoles as an Xbox Backwards Compatibility port. On New Year's Day, a list of Xbox achievements had shown up on TrueAchievements for GoldenEye 007 along with several art assets (via Wario64).

While this is most likely a direct port of the original game rather than a remaster, Xbox has been known to use enhancement tech like FPS Boost to improve older games in the past.

Could this all result in more collaboration efforts between Microsoft and Nintendo? It would sense considering that Rare's Banjo and Kazooie appeared as guest characters in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, and their namesake title is now available on the Nintendo Switch. Not to mention that 2022 will be marking GoldenEye 007's 25th anniversary, so now would be the perfect time to bring it back for modern audiences and celebrate its legacy. It undoubtedly would be a worthy additition to the Xbox's massive library of backwards compatible titles and Xbox Game Pass. We'll be sure to update you if and when (most likely when) this goes official.

  • Looks like two Gamertags have already unlocked some of the achievements too. Possibly members of the Dev team?
  • Man, how many hours of my life has this game sucked from me? This was like the Halo of the N64 for me.
  • This better come to Switch Online. It won't feel right playing on anything other than a Nintendo system.
  • Awesome great memories playing stack with my family as a kid... hopefully it gets multiplayer online added.
  • As long as it's a true port and not a weird remake. Though I loved the more recent 360 remake which looked great, it's just not the same. P.S. I'll smoke ANYONE on Remote Mines with me C buttons
  • It sounds like it's neither.
It's just the *old* 360 version running under BC. With AutoHDR and FPS Boost.
Most likely a deal was (finally!) reached to settle the licensing rights.
Or not. It's still a rumor.
There's other great games lost in limbo over licensing rights; the RAVEN XMEN LEGENDS games and tbe Activision Spider-men games among them.
  • So the one that never released and got recently leaked as a PC emulation?
  • *Apparently*.
It might have gotten cleaned up a bit. It might not.
(The Achievements report source includes pictures of the game. Textures look very 360-ish.)
The whole BC program is about making money off old code and what better than an old ready-to-go game that didn't get to ship? Found money! 😂 It's a good thing. It fits the game preservation narrative.
And it's a great headline generator for CES.
But it almost certainly isn't a remaster.
(If it were, it would mean MS had a team working for a couple years in total secret with nobody leaking. And how likely is that?)
  • I mean, they managed to pull it off with the Duo. So who knows?
  • I put thousands of hours into this game, so many memories. Would love a re-release, keep it identical, save for a modern controller scheme.
  • I have many rematches that need to be played. I used to pick up ammo, then drop prox mines right where the ammo or body armor was, watch it respamn, walk away and laugh. it was also fun to snipe grenades out of peoples hands.. cooking the grenade while being chased was a riot to
  • I used to do that in Fallout 3.
(Drop mines at spawn points. Wait a couple of game days. Fast travel in and watch the hang time from the explosion.)
In the Alexandria Merc camp, I'd kill the crew, hack the turret, and come back to watch who'd win.
Also, drop all the raider corpses from around Fairfax Runs in the same grate trap. They'd be stuck and chattering a party when I returned. One Nuka grenade later: hundreds of xp and more loot than I could carry.
Other times I'd pile up raider corpses with a deathclaw or a couple of enclavers. AI vs AI. Fun Times. Fallout 4, I would snipe suiciders in the right arm. boom. Often take out the entire team.
Looking forward to see what I can do in STARFIELD.
