Microsoft launches new View 3D Preview app for Insiders on the Windows Store

A new app from Microsoft, titled View 3D Preview, has popped up in the Windows Store. Currently available for Insiders to download and try out (opens in new tab) (via, View 3D Preview lets you easily view and interact with 3D models in the Windows 10 Creators Update.

The app looks to be fairly simple, but it already supports a number of file formats and lets you manipulate models in a number of ways. View 3D Preview's features include:

  • See your 3D models with high-quality staging.
  • Use simple pan, zoom, and orbit controls with your mouse, touch, pen, or keyboard.
  • Currently supports 3MF, PLY, OBJ, FBX, and STL files.

According to the app's description, it's only available for Insiders running Windows 10 Creators update build 14800 or higher. However, it is available for Insiders to test on both PC and Mobile, so you can view your models at home or on the go. And given the emphasis that Microsoft is placing on 3D in the Creators Update, that's definitely a good thing.

If you'd like to check the app out, you can grab it on the Windows Store now. Just keep in mind that this is a preview, and there are bound to be bugs to contend with.

Thanks for the tips, everyone!

  • FYI...My laptop is not on an Insider build and I was able to download the app.
  • Is this supposed to be different from 3D builder?
  • I think this is just for opening/viewing.
  • This is just meant for viewing the compatible 3D files. 3D builder is still used for building 3D objects. I think they just make it seperate so it a viewer app can stay light while the builder can have more features without worrying about the launch time.
  • I can download this app on my W10M 14393.448
    Not only for Insiders.
  • Why on earth would you make this a distinct app from 3D Builder?
  • Viewing 3D objects may become as common as viewing photos....So it does kind of make sense. You don't ship Photoshop with every PC for example
  • Just just wait until they enable you to use the depth sensing camera on the back of certain tablets so that you can have mixed reality experiences as well ;)
  • tried finding app in the store on windows mobile with no luck. Luckily thanks to the qr code i was able to install the app ty windowscentral.
  • I guess 3D Builder will be focused on light editing and 3D printing, while this viewer might evolve into a more complete manager/viewer with assets collections management and the ability to populate your holographic space with assets on VR and MR.
  • They should eventually combine the 3d Preview app and Photo app!
  • this is available for every one
  • Where is Windows Capture 3D? You have all these 3D apps coming out, but the big one to capture 3D objects still hasn't been released yet even though Microsoft said it's coming out very soon.
  • Dude stay tuned. These are preview apps which will be available from Creator's Update.
  • I am interested to see something on this too. I think the demo was almost definitely simulated (they didn't scan that castle in on stage as far as I can tell, and don't think any journalists got a hands on with the app at the event) It could still be in the early concept stage potentially, but I am eager to try it out and see how close to their demo they can make it.
  • All nice, but ... I wish and have frequently asked for them to support equirectangular .jpg spherical panoramas ... still not there.
  • That hurts! This is one of the features I mostly miss from my old nexus
  • Does this app allows to scan object in real world to convert them in to 3d.
  • If they support the dwg format, it will turn into a very useful tool like AutoCAD........ And also provide support for other people who doesn't use View....
  • This is like a photo viewer but for 3D objects....Which are set to become more and more common after the creators update releases. It does make sense to have a basic viewer IMO.
