Nokia experiences sales growth in India with Lumia hardware

Nokia has witnessed growth in sales of its Lumia line of Windows Phones in India, according to the Indian Express. While the company has been pushing in the market since Nokia adopted Windows Phone, a significant increase in volume is acknowledge in the emerging country. So what's changing for India? There's something in the air.
We've previously looked at how Windows Phone is picking up in India and how Nokia is stealing larger portions of the marketshare pie. A recent report from AdDuplex confirms Nokia's dominance in India. Nokia Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop had the following to add on the news:
"In terms of what is happening in Lumia for us in India, the volumes are picking up quite nicely. We got a broader portfolio in the Indian market from (Lumia) 920 to 620 and 520 and so forth. We are very pleased with the pick up we are seeing with those products in India."
Sales of the Lumia family increased to 5.7 million, as reported earlier this year. Elop continues to explain how India is a prime example where the company is focusing on strategies for both high-end and mid-level hardware:
"India sets that aspiration... we also recognised very large number of people who are more constrained in their ability to spend. I think India is a good example where we have to do both. There are countries around the world where only high end plays, United States is an example."
Taking full advantage of mobile operator subsidies to make its high-end Windows Phones appear more affordable to consumers with attached contracts. India, as well as other emerging markets, are important for not only the Finnish manufacturer, but Microsoft too. It's essential both companies focus on more affordable hardware as well as the expensive flagships.

At least as a secondary phone they might consider 520 or 620 -
Where is the figurative data from AdDuplex though?
-
I'm wondering that too.
-
Proud owner of a 920 in India. My sisters have the 720 and 820. I know at least 7 other people who have the new Lumias. Rock on Nokia!
-
I love my yellow Lumia 920. When I pick it up, it always drains attention with a black clone android owners.
Gogo Nokia! -
Nokia can only survive if their portfolio fills up nicely. Thats also the reason why they are doing great everywhere except the US.
I wonder if its worth it for Nokia to even focus on the US? They should just give it up just like Japan. -
sales figure shows improvement in US so why not! US is the large market for smartphone so its wise to concentrate there!
-
Relief....the operating system is Windows Phone- by Microsoft. What kind of sense would it make for Microsoft, via Nokia, to NOT offer their OS to US residents? I'll answer that for you - it would make no sense! So Nokia should continue the quest to penetrate the US market.
-
I don't see why people keep thinking you either have to dominate, or give up on a market. The US represents a massive pie, even a small share of which can be very profitable for any company. I think Lumia's are picking up here. A coworker recently got a 920 and my father in law is getting the 521 because of its price.
-
This is what I want to know... Why does everyone think if you can't be #1 you should just quit? What's wrong with #3? If you're making money (or on track to soon) there's no reason to not do it.
-
Ignoring the us market doesn't seem to be a good idea, as that was one of the reasons they started to do badly in the first place
-
I don't think they should ignorant the US. They should just focus more on other markets. The US shouldn't get all these devices first and all the other privileges. It's not wise to invest a lot of money in a market that's really not that interested. They should take a step by step approach with the US.

Nokia needs to close the huge gap between announcing and releasing new hardware, while at the same time increasing volumes.
I foresee strong growth ahead for WP. -

-
+1 . If they could do that, they probably will sell more handsets!
-
At least they seem to have done that with the 928, announcing it only when its about ready to release.
-
928. Announced Friday, available next Thursday. Can't beat that.
-
Certainly a huge improvement.
-
+928

I picked my Lumia 820 two days back and I'm loovingg it!!! :)
-
4 Lumias in my household. At least 7 more people with lumia in my knowledge. I am in India !
-
I decided to get a couple of 620s for my parents...so everyone in my home will have lumias except my apple-crazy sis!!! FYI, just today I went to the Nokia store with my mom showing her the 620 and how she could use it(she's NOT tech savvy in the least) and I realized how amazingly simple the UI is! Go WP!!!
-
The 620 is a gorgeous little phone.
I'm a proud owner of a 920, and yet I am strangely attracted to the 620.
Those dual-shot color shells are especially drool-worthy. -
Myself is proud owner of 800 & 620...,,way to go...keep it up Nokia
-
Indian living in the US using 920 on at&t. Does that count??
-
Joker!!
-
Only if you bought the handset in India. :-P
-
Counts as much as someone from Indiana. LoL But still awesome!
-
India's neighbor, Pakistani, living in the US work?
/s -
Good news from Nokia India and I also think there'll be more Lumia sales in the States with the new 928 at Verizon and the long-awaited Catwalk for later this year.

I think this is what is lost on many who are disappointed with the budget handsets that Nokia puts out. India, china, etc is where Nokia will gain long term success and viability due the market size and condition. It has time to make a buzzworthy flagship for north America. They need secure their economic future first.
-
Truer words were never typed.
-
What is the population of India? A bazillion? Imagine one bazillion Nokia devices with WP8.
-
Nope...gazillion.
-

Yes we are lookign for change but Nokia has got its own brand name in India unlike windows phone!! if you go to a retailer people ask for a android phone than the phone manufacturer itself.

-
I hope T-Mobile can help change the US to be less high-end specific as well, would open up the market a lot more.
-
The Lumia brand is pretty strong here in India.. I had a Samsung focus earlier.. I went hoarse asking people to give WP a try..but people wanted a galaxy!!!
But now that there is a whole portfolio of lumias with the awesomeness of WP8, things are picking up..
Women, especially, love the colors and buy them left and right. Two of my best buds own 920s and others own 820 and 520s..
And the 720 just launched here and it has been an impressive launch. The phone is absolutely stunning..couple of women i knew went ahead and bought it on a whim..its that good!! -
Nokia lumias FTW...!
-
I think Nokia and WP could thrive if they focus on Asia!! Asia could bolster their numbers and Europe their revenue!!
-
Lumia 710 and now a Lumia 920 owner in India .. My mom and cousin have 720s :D
-
Nokia covers major parts of the world with their high end to lower end WP smartphones. Nokia guided a higher growth then 27% between Q1 and Q2. Now we are are seeing evidence that the growth is really happening :-)
-
Indians love nokia and microsoft. Why? Because they are our sales rep, and go to call centers. They need to learn these so dumb americans can get their tech fix
-
You sir, are a retard.

-
Come come, my brother. Let us have chicken curry.
-
My 720 is due to arrive on wednesday. Could wait. Already my friends are eager to play with it and getting ready to shift to it from galaxies!!!
-
Viva India❗
-
superawesome!!!! :)
-
Well done Nokia. I think the awareness for the Lumia series is now high. People now keep asking me how to get my Lumia 820 more than before
-
one of the nokia lumia owner, go nokia go.
-
Have a 920 5 days after its launch. Bought a 620 for mom and now another 920 for dad.
I know/seen atleast 15 more people with Lumia's (WP8)!! -
Following up with the high adoption of Windows Phone in India, i'm looking forward of quality apps from India for international audiences.
-
Now if only the US would see utility in the phrase, "Less can be more" ;) hehe
-
Good for India
-
bought a 620 for my sis and 720 for my brother in law. i will get a 720 soon for me and 620 for wifey.. all in this quarter:)
-
If Nokia is doing great in India then MS must listen Indian users demand, Bring some games like Subway Surfer and hill climbing, clean up the mess with file attachment and where's my vlc...More people will buy Lumia without thinking twice.
-
I am waiting for Ski safari , tiny wings and Subway surfers.
Till then I am gonna play it on my other devices. -
If they really want be no 1 .... The key is WP is ... We all know Nokia makes the best hardware but its the os which letting them down i feel WP has still not evolved and some key features missing
-
Good for Nokia.. What baffles me is that even if its one of the biggest market, MS hasn't brought half of its service to India. Music and Movie store is still unavailable and Bing does not allow scout if the language is set to English India.
-
I am a proud Nokia Lumia 920 (RED) owner. I love the moment when people with boring black/white Samsung Galaxy Note 2/ S3 or iPhone asking for my phone and gazing it. They never forget to ask about the Lumia's hardware just to feel contended in the end! Anyways, neighbours envy our pride!
-
This is a untapped market, low end devices should be in rampant production.
-
Awesome news, from India too proud owner of an Lumia 800, convinced three of my colleagues to pick 2 620's and a 520 also recently ordered a Yellow 720 for my wife :)
To add to this i have had many people contemplating picking one of these beauties, way to go Nokia!!! -
