What you need to know
- Ori and the Will of the Wisps is an action platformer coming to Xbox One and PC in March 2020.
- The game will be part of Xbox Game Pass at launch.
- Moon Studios wants to patch it to 120 FPS on Xbox Series X.
- You can preorder it for $30 through the Microsoft Store.
This morning, many gamers woke up to a pleasant surprise. Ori and the Will of the Wisps, the sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest, is available for digital preorder on the Microsoft Store. The game costs just $30 and is launching on March 11, 2020. However, it seems like there's even more exciting news stored for Ori and the Will of the Wisps in the future.
On Reddit, user Decoraan posted a screenshot from ResetEra where Game Director Thomas Mahler said that interally, the team is pitching the idea of as 120 frames per second (FPS) patch for the game for Xbox Series X. You can see the statement below. It has been edited for clarity.
Internally we're also pitching around the idea of maybe making a version of Will of the Wisps that supports 120 Hz on the Xbox Series X, but that'll be up to Microsoft to decide, so feel free to tweet Phil about that. I think it'd be neat if Ori would be one of the first games to ring in the new era of console games supporting a higher refresh rate than 60 Hz. A lot of TVs out there support 120 Hz and by the time the Xbox Series X launches, that'll be even more commonplace, so people should have content that makes use of that new technology.
It's great to see that important teams like Moon Studios are already thinking about the Xbox Series X and how they can improve their current-generation games for it. The title already runs at 4K resolution and 60 FPS, so the jump to 120 FPS will make it even more responsive and smoother. It'll be interesting to see if this actually happens.
If you want to see Ori and the Will of the Wisps updated with 120 FPS support on Xbox Series X, be sure to mention this to Xbox head Phil Spencer on Twitter. We'll keep you posted as soon as we know more. Hopefully, more details about enhancements for next-generation consoles will be revealed at E3 2020.
