What you need to know

  • Sony has been extremely quiet up to now on any details for the PlayStation 5.
  • A livestream on March 18 will finally spill the beans.
  • This news comes just a day after Microsoft fully revealed the Xbox Series X, including specifications.
  • The console is expected to launch in Holiday 2020 as well.

After what seems like an eternity, Sony has finally confirmed we're about to find out the first system details of the forthcoming PlayStation 5 (PS5). The details will be delivered by the lead architect, Mark Cerny, in a livestream on the PlayStation Blog at 4 PM GMT, or 12 PM EST, tomorrow, March 18.

This is big. It's particularly noteworthy given that just yesterday, Microsoft revealed essentially everything about the PS5's main competitor, the Xbox Series X, including the first gameplay demos from some first-party titles like an upgraded version of Gears 5 and State of Decay 2.

Sony is expected to drop the PS5 in Holiday 2020, the same time as Microsoft launches the next Xbox, but as yet all we know for sure is what it's called and what the logo looks like. However, keep in mind that the consoles could be delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak that's severely impacting production.

But that's about to change, so set an alarm, keep your beverages close by, and let's get into it. It'll be quite awkward for Microsoft if the PlayStation 5 ends up being more powerful than the Xbox Series X. So far, leaks point to the PlayStation 5 being around 9.2 teraflops while the Xbox Series X is 12 teraflops, confirmed. We'll know for sure in a day. If it ends up being more powerful, then Sony has a major advantage on its hands going into the next generation, and it's clear that Microsoft didn't learn anything from the Xbox One debacle in 2013 and the 720p-resolution controversy.
