Report: 'Assassin's Creed Empire' will launch in 2017, Watch Dogs 2 in 2016

Details on Ubisoft's plans for Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs may have been revealed.

Kotaku reports that Assassin's Creed will be skipping 2016 to reboot the series, which has been annualized for some time now.

The story originated from 4chan's video game board, but Kotaku later verified it, stating the leaks were in-line with statements gathered from its independent sources. Kotaku previously outed Assassin's Creed Syndicate (formerly codenamed Victory) far in advance of its official announcement, adding further credibility.

"Assassin's Creed Empire" is reportedly set for a 2017 launch on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, and will take the franchise back to ancient Egypt, serving as a prequel to the entire series. The anonymous 4chan poster listed the details as follows, stating that the team is gunning for a Witcher-like feel. The leak says that players will take control of an escaped slave, and will also have the ability to control an eagle — a similar mechanic will feature in Ubisoft's upcoming Far Cry Primal.

The full list of comments can be found here.

..."Egypt. There won't be an AC in 2016. You may screencap this and refer to it when nothing is shown in E3 2016. You'll have to wait until 2017 for it. The reason: It will be a complete revamp of the series. The game is going for a Witcher feel, with player progression, freeform combat system. Horse is back, and boats too. It's made by the Black Flag team."......"This one has a lot more story than any of the rest. Going back to Ancient Egypt means they can do whatever they want, without "historical accuracy" to hold them back."...

Kotaku also stated that Ubisoft will unveil Watch Dogs 2 to fill the gap in their 2016 holiday line-up, set to take place in San Francisco. While Watch Dogs enjoyed robust sales and decent critical acclaim, it left a sour taste with some fans for its misleading reveal.

Naturally, it's always best to take rumors with a pinch of salt, but given Kotaku's accuracy regarding Ubisoft leaks before, this one seems like a safe bet. Assassin's Creed has suffered from franchise fatigue in recent years. As solid as Syndicate is — it shows that the series is becoming formulaic, lacking surprise and intrigue.

Assassin's Creed Unity damaged the franchise's selling power, according to Ubisoft head Yves Guillemot, who stated that 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate had suffered lower initial sales as fans waited to find out if the game suffered the same bugs as 2014's Unity. A reboot could breathe new life into Ubisoft's flagship franchise.

Ubisoft issued the following statement to GameSpot regarding the rumors:

..."We can't comment on rumour or speculation. We're always happy when players are excited about our games, past, present and future."...

Whether the next major AC installment is skipping 2016 or not, we're still going to pick up two new side-scrolling Assassin's Creed Chronicles adventures, an Assassin's Creed movie, and maybe even an Assassin's Creed HD collection.

Are you fatigued with the Assassin's Creed franchise? Did you enjoy Watch Dogs? Let us know in the comments.

  • Black flag 2!!!!!!! Cant w8!!!!
  • The tittle of the article is Assassin's Creed Empire...
  • Sounds very promissing indeed, Black Flag is my favorite AC's game so far, but it's not another pirate game I guees, just the Black Flag team that will be working on it.
  • Yeah but the gameplay of black flag is the best so if the same is making empire then iTs gonna be epic if they made it so full of action and awesome upgrades and i CANT W8!!!
  • Sure, it's very promissing so far.
  • Why did you guys like black flag. I couldn't play that more than an hour. The France one is more better. At least on the story wise (which is what I look for) Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Then try playing beyond one hour... There's a reason that gameplay wise Black Flag is considered best in the series, with incredibly intense ship combat and decent stealth and combat mechanics. Posted via the Windows Central App
  • Well, that's all... Siddharth sum it up pretty much... ;) By the way, the ship combat is one of my favorite things in Black Flag and stealth mechanics.
  • Go play Rogue
  • I'm not an AC fan but i love brotherhood and i think is the best AC game
  • Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed are set in the same universe actually. Watch the episode of Game Theorists on YouTube for proof. Here's the link: http://youtu.be/xWSWjN6n_UQ
  • It seems that way, they're play quite differently though
  • No they're not, both dev teams have denied it and stated on the record it was simply Easter eggs acknowledging each other.
  • Of course they can't admit something like that Officially. But you gotta watch the video. It's pretty convincing.
  • HEEEY another MatPat fan :DD I love game theory and film theory
  • All hail to the loyal theorists. :)
  • Theorists unite!
  • Darn it...this means I have now zero games I'm interested in 2016. Well...maybe it's a blessing in desguise. These past years have made my wallet bleed to no end. Now... "Going back to Ancient Egypt means they can do whatever they want, without "historical accuracy" to hold them back." I REALLY hope they're not following this line of thought. Ancient Egypt is as much history as Victorian England. Just because it's "Ancient Egypt" doesn't mean you can get away with anything. Don't f*ck this up, Ubisoft. We actually study Ancient Egypt in Europe, you know? I'm also curious..."Empire" regarding Egypt...I mean...Ancient Egypt was more of a collection of Kingdoms than an Empire per se. If you say "Empire" the thing you think about is Rome, not Egypt. Either way, Ancient Egypt is a brilliant time to set Assassin's Creed in. And so would be the Roman Empire (and, well, we don't really know in which part of Ancient Egypt's history are they placing the story. I'd bet probably around the reign of Tutanchamon but...). And I'm happy that the team behind Black Flag is behind this one. I loved Black Flag and - unlike some - actually enjoyed Unity. And I enjoyed Syndicate even more with the multiplayer cr*p gone. So I have high expectations for Empire.   As for the HD collection...I sure hope it happens...and that it includes Rogue in the mix. I didn't bought that one for the PS3 because I was expecting Ubisoft to release an XBone version...
  • I enjoyed Unity too after all the patches sorted the game out. I do think it's a little dull, same thing year in year out. Happy they stopped trying to shovel multiplayer into it - although I enjoyed the asynchronous stuff in Watch Dogs quite a lot. HD collection def needs Rogue in it.
  • When it comes to historical accuracy, we'll see how committed they are with the character designs. Do they go Elizabeth Taylor Cleopatra or actual Africans?
  • Great minds think alike. I had that Exact same thought. I hope it's the latter much like Freedom Cry in Black Flag I also agree with DJCBS. Just because it's ancient Egypt they shouldn't come with unicorns and mythical creatures for example. Egyptian history is one of the richest you will find around
  • I think their concern is documentation. The events of the French Revolution are pretty well documented and so interacting with those major players always held a risk of historical inaccuracy (as there is no record of Napoleon getting his ass kicked by an assassin). With Egypt, unless they are going Biblical with Moses, there is much for vagueness in the events. It makes it easier to create characters you can interact with without worrying about history nitpickers.
  • I do miss the dual arc of Desmond and (fill in character name here). Not that this implies that that could come back, but it'd be nice to see.
  • I hope they drop the meaningless Abstergo plot. I don't want to play a game as someone playing a game. It totally destroys the immersion. Also, I've kind of enjoyed Ubisoft's non-AC titles. Valiant Hearts was outstanding!
  • Ummm isn't that what AC have always been ?
A person playing inside the animus ? Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Yes, but the plotline has become so meaningless over the past several games, they might as well jettison it entirely. Running aroung Egypt as a slave is enough. You don't need to intersperse it with unwelcome visits to the present.
  • The inception type layers are what I enjoy most about the series.   If you're against that, you're going to dislike the movie. This is what makes the series.  If you don't like this, you really don't like the franchise. I was disappointed that with what they did with Helix, as it could have been so much more.
  • I'm waiting for that Watch Dogs 2!!
  • Yeah! I thought I was the only one who enjoyed that game! I still play it!
  • I gave up on the series after the second game, which took me YEARS to complete. The combat was just so bland and easy that it bored me away from it around midway through. It sounds like they're just going to brutally murder any real story, which was bastardized with/after AC3 anyway. The series is a disaster in storytelling, and I've not gone back to it because of that, and because they constantly screw things up.
  • Finally a break, I have played all games since the first Assassins Creed, but since I have kids I cant affort to play that much so I am stuck in Black Flag, so now I have a year to finish Rogue, Unity and Syndicate
  • Drop Unity... It's still frustratingly clumsy. Play Syndicate, tons more enjoyable Posted via the Windows Central App
  • They should have taken it to 1920's Manhatten, when they were starting to build all the skyskrapers - that would have been great to give it a 'Jazz Age' kind of feel.
  • black flag was one awesome game..
  • Unity series has some crap game play too sometime.
  • Of course it's in San Francisco they can reuse Driver San Francisco as a kind of back drop on graphics and driving.
  • i ahve yet to finish black *** and the French one.
  • HD collection plz
  • Have skipped Syndicate as I don't have enough time. I might get to it sometime this year. Unity took some time to get into, but I ended up enjoying it and finishing the story. Still have a fair bit of side objectives to complete if I want to go back and play it some more. Might grab Rogue for my old 360 and work my way through it, unless it does come as BC to Xbox One. Loved Black Flag, might play some this weekend just for the fun of sinking some ships. 3 nearly lost me to the series. 2 and Revelations are my faves from last gen. Never looked at Watch Dogs so won't bother with 2.
  • Watch Dogs 2 for me, I still love playing Watch Dogs, even with the dreaded skills reset. Lost interest in AC after AC 3. I did play black flag, but Unity was a pile of........ I just hope Ubisoft, makes the game better and tries to iron out the bugs a little better and doesn't try to deny that a bug exists. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • They better not f*** up watch dogs 2! I really hope to not seeing any bad ports this year!
  • Ancient Egypt means exactly what time period? Far as I know, "Ancient" Egypt was more than a few thousand years back. So Assassins Creed will now enter BC era after all games based in AD? Posted via the Windows Central App
  • ok it's nice and all that they're rebooting the franchise but when the hell are we gonna get an Assassin's Creed in Asia we have had them in all parts of the world besides Asia.
