Microsoft Teams upgrades screen sharing on macOS — but is it better?
Microsoft is rolling out an opt-in feature to allow Mac users to use native macOS screen sharing in Teams, gaining security and UI polish but losing a critical collaboration feature.

Screen sharing through Microsoft Teams on macOS is about to get better. A change to Teams will give you the option to use the native screen sharing experience on macOS rather than an app-specific method.
Those who use the native macOS experience will see a more polished UI that aligns with screen sharing through other apps and macOS itself. The new setup is also more secure.
Microsoft explains the benefits of the new feature in a Tech Community post:
"This new opt-in feature allows you to share your screen or window directly from macOS during Teams meetings. By leveraging Apple’s sharing models, we aim to deliver a more polished, welcoming, and intuitive experience for engaged Mac users and new adopters, as well as increase security and streamline workflows."
While the new sharing experience has benefits, it has a notable limitation. When using the native macOS screen sharing experience, you cannot give or take control within Microsoft Teams.
That functionality is critical to some users, making the new feature a downgrade.
Microsoft describes the feature as opt-in, so you should be able to continue to use the current method if preferred. The new experience is disabled by default.

The new method of screen sharing feels more native and is more secure, making it better for some users. But others will prefer the current method.
The feature is currently in testing among members of the Teams Public Preview or Microsoft 365 Targeted release. If testing goes well, the change should roll out to everyone eventually.
Microsoft discussed it further at Ignite 2025. The Microsoft 365 Message Center (archived here) states that the new feature should become generally available in January 2026.
You can become a Teams Insider by following steps outlined by Microsoft on its website. Setting up Microsoft 365 Targeted release requires a different process, which is also explained by Microsoft.
If you are a preview user, you can enable the improved screen sharing experience through Teams' settings:
- Click Settings and more within Teams.
- Click Settings.
- Select General.
- Within the Screen sharing section, toggle to enable "Use macOS content sharing."
You shouldn't have to restart Microsoft Teams after making the change. Once you're in a meeting, you will be able to share your screen using the native macOS experience.
While you can use Teams for free, several features are only available in the app with a Microsoft 365 subscription.
