MiniSuit BluBoard Review – A Bluetooth keyboard for Windows 8, RT, and more

Several Windows 8 and RT tablets have excellent first-party keyboard options, namely the Type Cover for the Surface and Surface Pro and Nokia’s Power Keyboard for the Lumia 2520. But sometimes the official keyboard is expensive (see the two keyboards I just mentioned) and some tablets just don’t have first-party keyboard options.

That’s where MiniSuit (maker of my Lumia 1520 case) comes in. The MiniSuit BluBoard is a universal wireless Bluetooth keyboard that works with Windows 8 and RT, Windows 7, Android, and iOS. It won’t break the bank and you can keep using it even if you switch tablets. But does it do everything a Windows tablet user needs a keyboard to do? Find out in our full review.

First Patch: v1.0.0.1 available for our official Windows 8 app

After a very positive initial launch of our official Windows 8 app, development is still very much in high gear as we look through all your feedback and start to address the teething issues you'd often see with any first big release.

Today v1.0.0.1 is available on the Windows Store, and is the result of work to fix the initial bugs we discovered after going live. So whilst you shouldn't expect to see much in the way of obvious changes we've hopefully addressed a few critical ones that were causing the app to either crash or not function at all for a few users. You can find the app here in the store, and the changelist below.

The Official Windows Phone Central app for Windows 8.1 is now available

Today I’m experiencing the wide variety of emotions that comes with launching a new app into any store. I’m thrilled that we’re finally able to share it with you, exhausted from all the time spent getting the underlying code functional and incredibly nervous about how it will be received and whether there will be any major bugs!

So with all of that in mind I’m very proud to present to you the official Windows Phone Central app for Windows 8.1, version 1.0 of hopefully many! Windows store apps can take up to 24 hours to show up in search results but you can find our app ready to download right now right here! If you want to go and grab it then come back and read this article please do, but I’ve got a lot to share with you so make sure you come back!

VLC for Windows 8 to be submitted to the store this week

The wait has certainly been an enduring one, but we're almost there folks. The VLC team has updated the Kickstarter blog with an entry detailing some work carried out on the port to WinRT platforms. The team believes they'll be in the position to submit the app once again to the Windows Store this week, so we should see VLC on Windows 8 in due course. What started a few months ago as a Kickstarter project is soon to become reality. Pass the break to see some screenshots.

2020: My Country breaks ground on Windows Phone and Windows RT

Last month, Russian publisher Game Insight’s popular city building game 2020: My Country launched on Windows 8. The game did not run on Windows RT at that time, nor was the Windows Phone 8 version ready. Optimizing for ARM-based hardware takes a little more time, and Game Insight wanted to get the lead version out in the wild in the meantime.

One month later, 2020: My Country has arrived on Windows Phone 8! And the Windows RT version is now available as well. If you enjoy free to play town-building games, the sequel to the original My Country is definitely worth a try. Read on for impressions and Store links!

Reminder: Your Windows 8.1/RT Preview licence ends January 15, 2014

If you are still using Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 preview, then it is time to start to pack up your bags and get moving. The license for your copy of Windows will officially expire on January 15, 2014 and you will have two routes to take to get your copy legitimized for everyday use.

Microsoft might drop licensing fees for Windows Phone and Windows RT to combat Android

There’s no denying the massive market share that Android currently has in the mobile landscape. Android is basically crushing the competition globally. For example, 81.0% of all handsets shipped were running Android in Q3 2013. Compare that to iOS at 12.9% and Windows Phone at 3.6% for the same period.

Why is Android so dominant? Is it the number of apps in the Google Play store? Maybe it’s the “openness” of the platform and the ability to customize every aspect of the phone? Or could it be the licensing costs that OEMs pay Google to use Android (aka nil)? It could very well be those licensing costs since Microsoft is considering doing the same with both Windows Phone and Windows RT in the future.

New Nokia Lumia 2520 ad teases the iPad Air on lack of keyboard, battery

‘Did I buy the wrong tablet?’ asks an iPad Air user after he discovers Nokia Lumia 2520 in the new video posted on Nokia’s official YouTube channel.

The video features a young guy who’s just got a ‘new, slim, and sleek’ tablet for productivity on the go, and flaunts it around amongst his friends including one pretty girl. He soon discovers though, that he frequently has to go to his laptop since typing on the screen can be a pain and the battery life hurts.

Mozilla Firefox adapts to your life - uses one profile for desktop and modern UI app

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has come a long way from the days of IE6 and may even represent one of the best touch screen web browsers around. Other third party companies don’t want to be left out of the future though, and Firefox has been the strongest advocate as its beta version of Firefox for Windows 8 continues to be developed. Recently, a blog post by Mozilla’s Brian Bondy, revealed that one annoyance of using Internet Explorer on the desktop and modern interface, will be remedied.

Microsoft delays Office for iPad, but speeds up Office for Windows RT

Many Apple users have been asking Microsoft when Office for iPad will be released, and to their dismay, the project is being delayed. While this may be a disappointing notice for iOS lovers, Microsoft fans should be excited, because the delay is a result of the company wanting to focus on Office “Gemini” – a touch optimized Windows 8 set of Office applications.

Nokia reportedly working on the 'Illusionist', an 8-inch Windows RT tablet

Nokia finally unveiled a Windows tablet at its conference in Abu Dhabi last month, the Lumia 2520 (pictured above), but already rumours are starting to come out that Nokia is working on a follow-up. Codenamed the "Illusionist," trusted Twitter leakster @evleaks has revealed that an 8-inch device is well on the way. Unfortunately, not much else was teased in terms of specification or imagery.

Nokia officially announces the Lumia 2520, their first Windows tablet

Nokia announces the Lumia 2520, their first Windows RT 8.1 tablet with a 10.1-inch display and Zeiss optics.

Nokia. Windows 8. Tablet. Yeah, it’s happening. Nokia’s been rumored to have a tablet in the pipeline for years now, but has finally announced one here at Nokia World 2013 in Abu Dhabi. The Lumia 2520 is the first device from Nokia powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor. This might look like your typical tablet running Windows RT on paper, but it has the typical Nokia twist you find in their smartphones. Let’s take a look at some of the official specs before we get our hands-on with the device shortly.

If you've been following news of the Windows RT 8.1 update, you'll know that Microsoft has pulled the release due to some issues that consumers have experienced while attempting to upgrade their tablets (be it Surface RT or other models from OEM partners). Redmond has now released a Surface RT 8.0 recovery image, which can be used on a "bricked" tablet to take you back to original factory configuration.

Asus: No future plans for Windows RT

Windows RT has had a rough year. It launched alongside Windows 8 late last October, but hasn’t exactly fared well in both sales and reception. It’s been tough to sell to consumers with the Surface RT being considered a flop by many and other OEMs not doing any better. Asus is now joining the growing list of OEMs who aren’t going to be working on Windows RT in the near future.

Nvidia CEO: Next-generation Microsoft Surface will be powered by Nvidia

Believe it or not, Microsoft is working on a second-generation of Surface devices. If you had any doubts, you can put those to rest.  But what exactly is going to be powering the different variants of Surface? Most of you are really wishing for a Haswell version of the Surface Pro (I am), but what about RT? Comments from Nvidia’s CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, indicate that you’ll find some more magic from Nvidia.
