You can perform an offline scan with Windows Defender in Windows 10 build 14271

An offline version of Windows Defender has been spotted in the Windows 10 Insider Preview. If you're rocking build 14271, it's possible to reboot the installation into a more secure mode to begin scanning the PC for threats to be removed without requiring the program to be on external storage.

There'll be a new option in the Settings app (under Security + Updates > Windows Defender) that will allow you to select "Scan Offline". This will cause the system to reboot and is estimated to take around 15 minutes to complete. It's a neat feature for those who choose Defender as their main line of protection.

  • What is wrong with the community lately? He just posted a benign "I'm still on TH2" and got 6 downvotes, and you replied in such an aggressive manner.
  • Is it similar to the offline scanner available from Microsoft?
  • yes Posted via Universal Windows App on Windows 10
  • RS1 has some neat features. Hopefully they update File Explorer soon with a new UI, proxy icons, png icon support, a more simplified properties dialog, and batch file rename.
  • You have no idea how much it pisses me off that Start + E is not taking me to "This PC" anymore..

  • I use it to. I have never had a problem. Except when I've let other people use my computer. Then, I have to use Malwarebytes or something else to clean it up.
  • I never used it. I don't want to use it ever either. So just stop forcing any update of it, no matter what, upon me. Make the updates optional. Those who want can download.
  • My PC keeps restarting at least once every 24hrs with this build, I dont know why and my preferred login doesn't work (finger print scanner, even though it still recognises my fingerprint), any ideas?
  • This is great. From a secure boot will provide a clean scan too.
  • Really a good feature
  • pretty sweet
  • I really like Wineries Defender. I wish they would continue improving it and make it great instead of calling it "minimum protection".
  • *Windows Defender. Why can't I edit my post in the app??
  • Wait a few hrs.
  • redesign now!!
  • Nice! This should help when cleaning up heavily infected PCs that block protection software from booting/working.
  • When I've encountered that, I removed the drive and plugged it to another PC.
  • And a malware tool is able to see/scan it as an external storage drive? Even with an OS on it and everything?
  • The Windows Defender Offline Scanner capability exists in Windows 10 Version 1511 (10586.x) too. While not in the Settings App, you can manually initiate it via the start-MpWDOScan Powershell command. More details are here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt634482.aspx Essentially it reboots the PC to Windows RE then starts a scan of the OS partition. It's a great solution for attacking stubborn malware.
