Unicode 9.0 is now official with 72 new emoji

Unicode 9 is now official, making standard a whole new set of characters and — yes — new emoji. In fact, in addition to 7,500 new characters, Unicode 9.0 has added a total of 72 new emoji to the standard. New additions include emoji ranging from an avocado and a clown to animals like a gorilla and bat. In the graphic below, put together by the folks at Emojipedia, you can take a look at all 72 new emoji.

Unicode 9.0 is official with 72 new emoji

In addition to the new emoji, Unicode 9.0 brings character support for "lesser-used languages" that include:

  • Osage, a Native American language
  • Nepal Bhasa, a language of Nepal
  • Fulani and other African languages
  • The Bravanese dialect of Swahili, used in Somalia
  • The Warsh orthography for Arabic, used in North and West Africa
  • Tangut, a major historic script of China

For much more, you can check out the different variations of each new emoji glyph added in Unicode 9 at the Unicode website. And keep in mind that these have only been finalized as part of the Unicode 9.0 standard, and you'll have to wait until Microsoft includes the latest batch of additions in an update to check them out.

  • I think there are already too many emojis, to be honest. It's a chore to scroll through them to find the one I want.
  • I use only the ones predicted by the keyboard. I suppose they will put a bot on the keyboard to insert a suitable emoji soon.
  • Emoji should be removed. Eather all of them, or most except the few normal and used ones. They honestly should work on some other more important stuff, and not on including every ethnicity and every possible emoji there is.
  • It's pretty exciting that Microsoft is almost guaranteed to be the first OS maker to have a stable release with these new emojis. It's a small thing but it's good to see that development is moving so fast nowadays. Hopefully in the future Windows 10 will be first with even bigger new features. :D
  • They took so long to implement the last batch that I really hope they move to include these new emojis faster.
  • The Anniversary Update will include these new emojis. If you're already rocking an Insider preview build, you can see these in action by visiting http://emojipedia.org/unicode-9.0/.
  • Microsoft emojis are not updated in this website, how sad...
  • Is it me or does Microsoft has the uglyiest emojis?
  • These aren't from Microsoft...
  • I know, I doesnt ment the one on the Picture. I ment these on my Lumia 930
  • Windows 8, yes ultra ugly.
Windows 10, pretty cool. But iOS's are too popular and "iconic" in the social impact they have. I do like them too. The smile with tears is perfection.
  • I have not noticed that there was a difference between Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile in terms of the Emojis? Maybe thats because i dont use them on my smatphone anymore, since there is so much differenz between W10M and iOS / Android.
  • Sorry I meant windows 10 anniversary update (now in insider builds)
  • Google's are horrible. It looks like they were taken from a 1950's comic strip about how to protect yourself in the case of nuclear attack.
  • I didn't know my country is a member of Unicode! It's featured on their website.. :|
  • I feel like all the emojis in that image are of a somewhat consistent style. And then there's the gorilla XD
  • Why did MS never release the middle finger emoji?
  • Try typing f#@k you
  • Cool. I wonder why you can't just manually find it. Thanks though.
  • it's Unicode 9.0 already? even the flag emojis that were introduced in Unicode 6.0 are still only shown as country codes!

  • Those Moosests!
  • GREAT!! Nepal Bhasa .... :)
  • have you used it yet?
  • So ... we are slowly going back to hieroglyphs :) but with a modern look.
  • And I might use four or five of them Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Stable release? How about FINAL realse instead of another year of previews ffs!!
  • There never such thing as a final release until the next version is ready to be released. Or it's no longer supported.
  • Is it working on all devices even one didn't update yet? I didn't get it.
  • What ever happened to the middle finger emoji?
  • If you type in **** you or **** off it'll appear in the predictions
  • Do you need to have a US keyboard for that? Im using English Australia keyboard but im not seeing it
  • Microsoft needs a slack style search engine for emoji in the keyboard.
  • Finally - Pita Sandwich!!!
