VLC Coming to Windows Mobile?

To be filed under the category of “Rumors that we really hope will become a reality”, the folks at VideoLan have given us hope that VLC will be coming to a Windows Mobile handheld near you. Jean-Baptiste Kempf of VideoLan used verbiage on his Blog that indicates that a port to Windows CE could be in the works. While that’s not a sure thing, I’ve definitely got my fingers crossed for some WM love.

VLC is a popular, open-source media player that is popular on most desktop operating systems. In addition to featuring playback of most popular media type natively, VLC features the additional ability to stream video across a network.

Ever since TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) development was ended and Core Player was released, Windows Mobile has been lacking a free media player with as much functionality. If VLC is truly coming to Windows Mobile then that particular hole should be filled nicely.

  • Kinoma Freeplay?
  • Kimoma Freeplay is probably the best free option that I've seen, but it doesn't quite stack up to what TCPMP offered or what I would expect from a VLC port.
  • Two questions: Does the Core Player play every thing that VLC plays? Does it work for windows mobile?
  • Yes, TCPMP and Core Player both works well on Windows Mobile, but VLC can play far more codecs and formats without any problems. I hope VLC will come to Windows Mobile!
  • Yes, I confirm that we are working on a Windows Mobile version for VLC.
We have still a few issues and speed limitations, since VLC was not created to target those light machines. More about it in a few weeks.
  • Just do it man! the society would really appreciate it!

" is it like the the current VLC 9* with all its bugs still not fixed ? when VLC 8* still works far better than any VLC 9* series for streaming , we have to ask ourselves is it even werth installing any VLC 9* on windows machines, Mplayer/mencoder seems far more stable for cross platform streaming Encoding these days, has VLC been effectively abandoned for all the non geek users today ?. i note the web messageboards are full of questions and very little real howto dev answers always refering to a wiki rather than just give a simple working VLC command line to make your basic problem just work as you might expect it should, so much for helping people use your apps.
  • Quite an agressive tone towards people that are working day and night to give you and millions of other people a great media player FOR FREE.
If more ungratefull bastards like you keep posting like this they might consider to drop the development all together.
