Windows 10 for phones preview pulled for Lumia 520, 525 and 526

If you own a Lumia 520, 525 or 526 smartphone and have yet to download the new 10051 build of the Windows 10 for phones technical preview, you will find that it is no longer available. Microsoft has pulled it from circulation for those devices due to problems with rolling back to Windows Phone 8.1.

A number of users who own those three Lumia models have reported those smartphones were bricked when they rolled back to Windows Phone 8.1. They were using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool after installing the Windows 10 for phones preview. A Microsoft rep has confirmed those reports on the company's support forums and added:

"We are pausing build availability for these devices temporarily while we investigate the issue and work with customers who have reported problems."

Microsoft released the 10051 build of the Windows 10 for phones preview last week, along with a list of known issues with the build.

  • Thats a good save!
  • Mine too +520
  • You could try Nokia software recovery tool. Worked for me when Microsoft failed
  • @Kirsutin was ur phone also dead completely or it hanged at the reset screen (gears spinning ) ?
  • but it is saying "package is not available for this product"
  • Well.. I rolled back. It got stuck after downloading and installing 8.1, i hard reset it and working more than fine now. Its smoother than how it used to be
  • Hey buddy my phone(lumia 520 )  has gone dead too, what do i do now? no display nothing !!
    how do i reset ??
  • Hey bro, here is the link to reset...
    http://www.hard-reset.com/nokia-lumia-520-hard-reset.html
  • Even this is not helping bro !! My phone seems to be dead to all things!
except it gives the connection sound when i connect to PC :P
  • Dude wait for it to lose all it battery energy!
  • Then charge it even if no sign of chargement is taking place! Then after 1 hour , make the hard reset ! As the link stated!
  • That's not going to work, when a Lumia 520 gets bricked by this, hard reset will not work either. Neither will your phone charge.
  • Hey don't worry that happened same to my 520 , I did this: First download and install Lumia recovery tool for your lap or desktop and connect your phone to PC via USB after this launch recovery tool this will shows somethin and in that select my phone not detected then that tool automatically starts detecting your phone model and starts downloading the OS and then follow the instructions as tool suggests don't remove phone from PC until it get completed it may take half an hour and more depends on data speed and it's about 1.5 gb. And its worth to wait.
  • NO dude after getting bricked, recovery tool is not even recognising the phone !!
though if someone gets out by this way tell me too :P
  • same here 720 bricked and no recovery tool working.. checking for a good repair shop having JTAG to recover my phone
  • Exactly same issue with my 520.... Just gives sound when connected to USB and nothing else.
  • See the my comment below on @studio384 and follow the procedure
  • Lumia 620 from wp8.1 to a laggy w10 and no recovery possible with windows phone and lumai recovery, nokia care suite or lumia suite, nothing works. Had red screen od death and then went black. Dead phone doesnt response to any buttons only sing of life is sound when I connect and disconnect it
  • Exactly the same problem but no one is getting it, plz understand that not even "power"+ "vol - "  is not working!! and someone plzz come up with adequate solutions!
  • My Lumia 620 downgraded to wp8.1 from win10 perfectly through windows phone recovery tool.
  • which one did you use @Jena? thanx
  • Happened to me too a month ago. I gave my phone to Nokia care, they said it would cost me INR. 3500 ($56), but after 15 days, they told me that they were unable to fix the phone, its completely dead now.
  • They replaced my phone :)
  • Thx for the motivation .... :-)
  • charge ur phone with charger for batteries...then put the battery in the phone and connect it to PC...then try again
  • someone said nokia care replaced the motherboard for INR and got the phone back working all in 15 minutes.....sounds unbelievable to happen in India... but I'm gonna go to Nokia Care to replace motherboard.
  • If u are going today plz do update what do they say!!
  • my 720 is dead and noika care (in Delhi India)is asking for 15k (~250$) to replace motherboard  :(  sad service..
  • really?! that's unacceptable. that phone is not even worth 10k in the present market condition..
  • See the my comment below on @studio384 and follow the procedure you'll get your phone back.
  • I had a similar problem - check my blog post to see how I fixed my Lumia 520. https://zudomc.wordpress.com/2015/04/17/dont-install-the-wp-10-tech-prev...
  • your things look satisfying but my fone is dead, its not showing those spinning cogs, i can't even check how much it is charged
  • Man, it fixed my dead phone! I was going to throw it but you saved it man! Thanks a lot!
  • my lumia 520 suffered from same epidemic disease. I went to Nokia care point and those people replaced the motherboard of my lumia for 3000 INR (50 $). now, its healthy again and working like a new set.
now OS is windows phone 8.1 obviously. my phone was OUT OF WARRANTY
  • Thank god I didn't installed it.....
  • hey bro help me plz i got failer during roll back lumia 525 and now become stoped working and it showing only black nokia screen so plz help me out to solve this problem...
  • I was bout to install it
  • I had it on my 1520. it was a bad idea. Drained 2GBs of data in 4 days for some reason. AT&T charged me $10 for overages lol. Plus it was just too glitchy to have on my main phone. I should have further heeded the warnings. So today I was going to install it on my 520 instead (it's my jogging mp3 player basically; figured I could give it a second function). Good thing it was pulled. I wouldn't want it bricked.
  • My 620 almost had this problem too, Lumia & Windows Phone Recovery Tools always fail to flash my phone, and it stuck at Nokia logo at start up. Luckily old software, NSU can solve this problem. I think they should pulled W10 for 620 too.
  • Still won't install on my 620 :(
  • Patience is a virtue! I recommend to all to wait for the official release of w10.
  • Nope. Its working well on L620. Apps are slow , crashes sometimes. but not too bad. I am using it.
  • When I tried to roll back on my 620 with Windows recovery tool it messed up. However I was able to recover with Lumia software recovery tool.
In short what my thoughts, Microsoft has completely failed after acquisition of Nokia devices division as for as quality Is concerned.
  • lmao
  • This! Highly recommend using NSU if else fails
  • My 920 went straight from cyan to win10.
  • I successfully rollback to windows phone 8.1 from windows 10 yesterday only. Once upon a time I thought that my phone was bricked but hoosh after 3-4 attempts I am able to rollback.
Those whose phone got dead while rollback don't worry try 4-5 more times it will work.
  • Mine is so slow it is unusable. I was going to use the recovery tool maybe I should wait Posted via the Windows Central App for Android on my Oneplus One
  • No prob with 830, no?
  • Nope.
  • Works nice for me. Just the keyboard is too tiny hehe :)
  • That what she said
  • nope. I rolled back yesterday with no problems.
  • Ok,thanks
  • iTroll. Lol, nice nick ^_^
  • Lol yeah.
  • (^_^)
  • A recovery tool turns out to be the killer, never would've guessed. Next your going to tell me it was with a candlestick in the foyer.
  • Would have*
  • Would've
  • Should've
  • Could've
  • I know the article is referencing th 530 series, but the recovery tool did a perfect job restoring my 1520. They should also pull it for the 1520 as well due to the fact that is made the mercedes benz of WP run like a fiat!
  • I'm loving it on my 1520. Wouldn't go back now. Plus it's not nearly as buggy and laggy as I'd thought it would be.
  • More like a "Yugo".
  • A Ford Pinto, or Chevrolet Chevette
  • And I think it's the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. I tried to bring it back with Lumia Software Updater, but it won't recognize the model. Phone's showing up like "Nokia Emergency Device".
  • That's some serious problem...good they let people know before more ones got bricked
  • Serious problem and i am sure that everyone was annoyed by the popups and warning before installing and signing up for insider programs. If you use the 520 as your main phone why would you put Win10 on .. if you dont. than fuck it.. they are cheap phones anyways
  • Reading comprehension eludes many for the TECHNICAL PREVIEW it seems. There will be problems they said, it could brick your phone they said and yet many don't get that expect the builds to be flawless.
  • Not sure why anyone would be rolling back if they listened to numerous warnings of who this technical preview was intended for. Purchase used hardware for testing and this won't be an issue.
  • If I use a 520 as my back-up/developer phone and it gets bricked, I still have to replace it.  Just beacuse they are cheap phones doesn't mean it is no big deal to brick it.  Most people don't have money to buy new phones all the time, $50 is still a lot of money for me.
  • Ebay 2 for $10 with free shipping.. even for spare parts like screens & batteries, it made it all worth while.
  • There was a 526?
  • Chinese variant of 525
  • L620 :)
  • +620
  • My 620 had problem too when flashing with Lumia & WP Recovery Tool, always fail and make it stuck at nokia logo at start up. Luckily NSU can save it.
  • So glad they did this before it got out of control. I hope fellow 520 users are happy now; if they hadn't released it at all, the whining here would've been through the roof. I hope people take this issue more seriously, and lower their expectations, because it's extremely early and unstable software, on almost 3-year-old hardware. That's never a good combination.
  • I installed it on my 520 several times. Never any problems rolling it back, but the home and back buttons were not functioning whilst W10 was installed.
  • I installed it on.my 520. Everything worked as it should, but W10 is a little sparse at the moment to say the least.
  • hi,  I am facing same problem. I am using lumia 620. have you found solution yet?
  • I have W10 TP on Lumia 521 that's not even on list of devices to get that!
  • I have a 521 as well, for all intents and purposes Microsoft treats the 521 like the 520. If the 520 is listed it means the 521 is suported as well.
  • Is there Lumia 526 ???
  • Ativ S can download the preview!!
  • wait can it? just like any lumia?
  • Yep
  • Be cautious though. Ativ, although a great phone, has had problems even with Dev Preview builds. You might want to tread safe.
  • Well the Nokia tool works just fine. I have tried
  • The tech preview is a good reminder of how insanely complex it is to build an operating system.
  • Yup, pity 95% of the general populous do not understand that.
  • They do understand. Complexity or bugs are not the real complaint. Its the overall wp direction. 95% of the WP general populace are smarter then you think. I'm sure the 5% probably of the populace don't understand that.
  • They somehow manage to do it with big windows which needs to support millions of hardware configurations compared to just a few on phone side.
  • @techfreak1: I think your comment are correct less. People who decided to install WP 10 TP already knew what bugs they will experience in. But on my experience the bugs are in the crucial phone function like the notification that won't automatically turn back up, I have to press the lock button to make it return to homepage, it's ridiculously annoying. My Lumia is 535. I don't know if it happens to another Lumia model.
  • Off topic: Bing not giving cricket fixtures or predictions or anything...
    Anyone else?
  • Yes, same here. It stopped me giving predictions. I thought I was alone.
  • We WP fans are alone...
  • I waiting. Lumia 920
  • The 920 already has it. Its install on my 920
  • I've stopped the upgrade process after GDR2 on my 920.
  • Did anyone have installed Windows 10 tp on high devices like 1520 or 1020? Is there any problem appear?
  • Check the forums.
  • I put it on an old 920. Quite rough around the edges, but nothing stood out as broken. But, no way would I install on my daily driver. Not even close to ready for prime time yet.
  • Office is broken.
  • nothing much on my 1020. just some bugs on some apps. :) cellular data toggle works too .

  • Yeah, L1020. Lots of bugs, crashes and resets - but that's to be expected. The feedback tool has been my companion! The only way wp10 is going to get any better is through lots of feedback, so I'm keeping it installed.
Luckily I just picked up my free EE power at today, so the ridiculous amount of battery I'm going through each day is less of a problem!
  • i did as soon came out on my Lumia 1020 and hardly regret and that's why 2 days after i rolled back to 8.1.Reasons why on day one data conection was switching on and off by it's self and i don't have any data plans with my operator so i spent like $10 for nothing.Day two the the phone didn't recognized my sim card it says no sim and right after the screen goes down i can't turn it on i have to use soft reset buttons to bring back the screen in live.So i wouldn't recommend to install TP better wait till the official release.Luckily for i used Windows phone recovery tool to roll back to 8.1 and now everything is fine
  • Thanks a lot friend for the information. Well actually imma bout to install wp10 tp on my 1020, but in deep heart keep thinking if any problems or bugs would appear. And yeah! The light shows me the path. Ya, better wait for the official one released soon ;)
  • Installed it on my 1020. It worked fine initially, but after a reboot it stopped recognizing my SIM. Bought a new SIM, wouldn't recognise it either. After resetting the phone from the about screen it started recognizing the SIM again. But it took about 2 hours to complete the reset, the settings didn't fully restore so I had to spend another 4 hours changing settings back to normal. The settings app constantly crashing didn't help. After this I didn't have any major issues in the last 2 days. But I wouldn't recommend to install it if you don't have time to invest in fighting/fixing the broken stuff.
  • When will it release on L535
  • Already available...
  • I rolled back my 520, had to run the recovery tool twice to get it to work though.
  • I installed WP10 on my 520 and now want to roll back. I accept the challenge.
  • Hm, but i successfully rolled back my lumia 525 from win 10 to 8.1 with help of lumia recovery tool. It is some different tool, or i just lucky?)))
  • How did you find the Win 10 preview? I really want to put it on my daily driver 525. Don't have the cash for a new WP xD
  • Phones had a problem rolling back via the windows phone recovery tool which was coincidentally stated as a safe tool to rollback by ms. You just got lucky :D
  • Please I need your help? Do you still have the package on your computer? None of the tools can find the package for my lumia 525. Could you please upload it on internet and give me a link to download it? If you could help a poor guy like me. I beg you ^^
  • It did work for a few people
  • I think it is pulled back for Lumia 620 as well. I first installed Windows 10 and then rolled back because of data connection issue. After rolling back when I tried to reinstall Windows 10, I did not get the update.  I am anyway waiting for the next build with some issue fixes, especially the one related to data connection.   Thanks,
  • Wasnt a good experience on L620?
  • Yeah.. Worst experience actually
  • No. I use internet over WiFi only and not on mobile data. So even when the data connection was OFF, I was being charged for data usage. Secondly, everything was crashing a lot, may because of low RAM and my phone was loaded too. I will wait for the next build.
  • May b coz of less RAM & earlier build...
  • 525 has one GB ram
  • Part of those TP caveats was increased data usage. Has to be a leak somewhere.
  • Yes seems to be. I will try the next build. Will stay on 8.1 for now.
  • I rolled my Lumia 925 back. It is back on cyan but can no longer receive any updates at all. It is something to do with the time on the phone not being same as server and I have to update the time manually. It won't sync automatically. Dunno what to do.
  • Just go to care. They may have the latest updates
  • Why not force updates through Dev Preview?
  • Should I update my Lumia 520 to wp 10 is?
  • U do they release if they know the issues... Pathetic
  • No issue for me in rolling back to 8.1 it was smooth no hiccups just hoping the new build solve the data connection bug
  • I have an 1520. After using it for a week, I decided to go back to 8.1. The phone restarts itself after clicking on a picture in a text message. The touch becomes unresponsive 4 times in a single day. I had to soft reset it to make a phone call. Not able to answer phone call is frustrating. Even for a technical preview, there has to be some basic standard. It is very badly managed.
  • Try doing a reset of the phone
  • Good that they did it. I hope they fix it and release it soon. I am glad that I didn't installed it in my phone
  • Too late for my 520. It doesn't even turn on after using WPRT. Yet, it's somehow stuck in flash mode. Just got the 635 to replace it.
  • My L520 is already dead! Tried everything except jtag :(
  • I also did the rollback to 8.1 and I too felt that my phone has been bricked as the spinning gears went on and on for 12 hrs but then I removed the sd card after removing the battery directly and voila !! the spinning gears went on for some minutes and it rolled back successfully
  • I've 525 and I just opened insider app and it said build is available for your phone select the ring. Everything worked fine but I stopped installation I.e. Did not let phone reboot
  • I am one of them whose 520 is no more !! :(
  • Me too bro
  • Given to local for repairing... :(:(
  • Try Nokia Care Suite , worked for me.
  • Mail me the complete procedure at sujitintel@live.com .. :(
  • I followed this thread to download and configure Nokia Care Suite: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515453
  • I gave them too a month ago when i had similar problem. They were charging me Rs.3500 but returned it after 15 days saying, it can't be fix now.. its completly dead.
  • I couldn't get it work on my 1520...
  • I has roll back
  • Thanks all who are participating to make this OS more refined.
I cant put it on my primary/secondary/dailydriver/only one 620.This is too scary.
  • Thankfully I was able to roll back to 8.1 without bricking my 520, though it did fail a number of times initially.
  • I have a bricked L520 because of rolling back from win 10 to win phone 8.1. It is my primary one. Time being m using my brother's L730. Hope MS fixes the issue and gets my phone back. MS please do something.
  • Same here bro... Got a L730 after 520 bricked !!!
  • It also bricked my 635!...No love for me.  Having to stop by the ATT Service Center today to see if they can reimage my phone.
  • I am definitely not going back!
  • I used Lumia recovery tool to jump back to 8.0. It was easy.
  • 535 please
  • So you want a broken 535?
  • My L925 bricked when tried to rollback to 8.1. It was my primary phone so I had to get a new L635 to use until an official W10 phone is released.
  • Please tell what to do if my phone has been bricked in this way? No display no response not even charging notification !! :(
  • quick question but what happened to office, becuase it is nowhere to be found on my 928 WP 10 preview ??
  • It was pulled of from the current TP..
  •  o ok is there any alternitives to get it back? or use a thrid party app ?
  • Only waiting. They said it will be available for download
  • They should have used Lumia Recovery Tool...
  • I installed it then did a hard reset and rolled back
  • I had trouble rolling back on my 1020. I think my mistake was loading the backup that was taken while running W10. It screwed up my mail. I no icon in all apps for mail, just a setup mail on home. When I tried to add my outlook.com account, it said it already existed, but there was no way to open it. I eneded up having to do a reset and load an older backup, but then I realized that backup was from the latest 8.1 and the recovery tool restored base 8.1, so I lost my home screen configuration and all that.
  • My start button is super unresponsive on my Lumia 520 w/ Windows 10. Anyone got a similar issue?
  • Yep, known issue.
  • All keys were bit unresponsive on mine..
  • So if I have the preview installed on a 520, what do I do?
  • You do realise that this article is not about the 1520?
  • My mistake, typo!!
  • Haha, and I just sent in my phone for repairs, we'll see what they say about warranty stuff for the L520. Oh well - a minor setback.
  • Use lumia software recovery tool to fall back to windows phone 8.1 from windows 10. I have used it on my lumia 520 for upto 3-4 times and my phn is still working perfectly doesn't know what will happen if you use windows phone recovery tool......
  • After update 2 L625 downloading wp10 hang with 53% please fix it
  • Please use the forums.
  • Bricked my 520.
MS would be giving any solution or need to go to NCC?
  • I was able to rollback successfully once but the second one bricked my device #Lumia520
  • I think this is an issue with the recovery tool, not the preview. I couldn't even install the preview on my Lumia 521 due to issues with the OS causing the Insider app to crash when checking for builds, and the recommended action that i could find to take was to reset your phone with a fresh copy of the firmware through the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. Now my phone is stuck in emergency mode and cannot reboot or switch to anything else (I've tried the button reset combo then volume up as a number of places suggested, but the device won't reboot or do anything that will allow me to flash it regularly.) It's stuck in emergency mode til i can get the emergency config xml for the Windows Phone Recovery Tool Thor2 Flasher utility
  • Installed windows10 in Lumia 520. Did a factory reset n nothing was there in phone even the settings in the app list. Hardly 6-7 apps were there Used recovery tool n installed wp 8.1 and then wp 10 again. Works great except for few glitches.
  • I updated my 520 to windows 10 and had some issues about sim + cellular.. So i planned to roll back, i used Lumia Recovery Tools instead of Windows Phone.. It's fine. *Back up first files
  • I had Windows 10 installed on a spare 520 with a broken screen. It performed horribly, and several of the built-in apps wouldn't even open. Probably because I upgraded the OS instead of clean installing. When I tried to go back to 8.1 and redo the upgrade I was confronted with a red NOKIA screen. Seems bricked. Luckily I followed instructions not to use it on a main device.
  • If it gets stuck on the Nokia screen keep trying, just force a restart and try again. I finally got my 520 restored on the 8th try.
  • No issues...i m happy. L520.
  • I wasn't happy. It was heating and only 2hrs charge. I went back to 8.1, happy now.
  • Well I had W10MTP on my 920 and cannot revert back to wp8.1 via wpsrt of not seeing the device as connected. However, I could revert back to wp8.1 via lsrt. I don't know why but LSRT works fine, but wpsrt could not even recognize my device.
  • Cut to Gahan Wilson cartoon depicting blood spattered surgeons reassuring anxious relatives that they are doing everything humanly possible to avoid a malpractice lawsuit.
  • I rolled back my 520 w/o a break using Nokia software updater for retail.
  • that is what is bricking everyones phone ... you got lucky :)
  • Is it software updater for retail or recovery tool? I think they are different
  • there is a huge list of people that have a brick now ... windows only recognizes there is a unknown usb device plugged in ... it can't even read what type of device
  • Can we expect any solution to recover a bricked 520?
I have taken my phone to Nokia care!
They said its useless now unless I change motherboard!
  • Same here, but I hadn't even installed Windows 10. I simply tried to recover my phone using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool and it got bricked. Now it won't even turn on or do anything. It's completely dead. Good thing Microsoft is acknowledging a problem, but what about a solution? My phone was unfortunately out of warranty, but I think Microsoft should offer some support or exchange, considering we were using an oficial tool provided by them in their support website.
  • My phone 1320 im update windows 10 too much error.....so what i do and i have a laptop and i donwload windows 8.1 recovery tool and i back windows 8.1 ...... Now my phone not windows 10 windows 8.1
  • Ohh , this users save me. Thanks friends who have installed and informed us and Microsoft. Really big thanks. I am about to thinking to install the preview. Thanks a lot. I have already known without issue Microsoft won't release an update. There must.
  • Not also to those phone also to the 925 on T-Mobile
  • It happen to me last week
  • Lot of silly people can't rollback, because they can't use WP, but a lot of people who want to try Win 10 now suck! Thank you all guys who can't rollback. (I'm tested it out on my Lumia 520, and I now on 8.1 Denim because no Office and I can't turn off cellular data.)
  • I installed it on my 520, it was slow as hell so I rolled back to 8.1 to do a clean install... after that I upgraded again to 10TP, no problems on my end, but the build is still slow and buggy :( Well I won't roll back to 8.1. I'll just wait for the next 10TP build :) and use the current on until then.
  • Ok
  • I know this is kinda irrelevant but I found the Lumia Icon is available again on both MS store and amazon, I'm kinda surprised I never heard about it from this site :O
  • So maybe I should wait to rollback my 925.
  • hellow guys help i updated my lumia 920 to windows 10 using the win insider aap but when i switched off my phone, it did not bring anything when i switched it on and when am charging it only brings the word nokia and the charging sign. please help me wat can i do?
  • MS is playing game with this platform. Releasing such buggy OS to phones significantly reduce the performance of handsets. This type of OS should not be allowed. It may hamper the development of this platform as well.
  • You do realise that it's a *preview*?
  • I do sir. But it does not mean buying phones with my money to be used for Microsoft's research by compromised performance.
  • I have face so many issue after installed windows 10 in my Lumia 525 and I uninstalled without any issue by 1day trial
  • -520... Going to BugDroid
  • I still don't understand why Windows 10 technical preview was first released for a small subset of phones, and others had to be 'added in' later, and now W10 TP is bricking a small subset of phones. Like, what is going on here--Microsoft has to make different versions of Windows 10 for every possible device that is running it? That seems like a lot of work. I don't get it.
  • I've given up the Windows 10 tech preview on Windows Phone for my Lumia 625 here is why 1) Cannot turn down cell phone data, I lost all my credit on my pre-paid phone since the update downloaded all from the cellular network, although is set as off. In Data Sense you can also can't change this, so this is basically keeping me out of having chance to make phone calls. 2) Video player doesn't work well on my recorded videos. It shuts down randomly.
  • Wow... so they pulled it because some people "oh it's too buggy... I knew it and read it but I still wanted to install it. now I will roll back" wowooww... just wow, I mean, I don't expect people to stay always on a preview, but some people should not use thier main phones, which means or 1. they don't install it 2. get a second phone to test it and leave it there. end. Now if I wanted to install it on a 520 I wouldn't be able to for these idiots who don't know what a preview is and they think it is like car accident they should watch directly, only because other idiots are watching too. I mean.. the thing was released on friday, and people already were rolling back? again, where are their second devices to test this kind of stuff?? oh yeah, they don't have but still wanted to try something and 5 minutes later roll back. and complain how it sucks and buggy it is. it surely makes sense /s Why don't just people stick to read WCentral or Neowin or WinBeta or other sites? Microsoft should do it harder for clueless people to install these previews. they make it easy and they get stupid crap because they ignore using a second device for this preview and not install it on their main phone. and they also can get stupid feedback too "Spartan crashed with 10 tabs opened" "why are hamburger buttons at the top? I don't like it" "my phone is slower, do something Windows Phone is dead" "why are we treated like crap, other platforms are better supported by Microsoft but Windows 10 doesn't work well on my phone, if it was released for iOS or Android it would better"   Idiots idiots, always idiots everywhere. But I thank you for this and your crap. 7 days since preview release and you keep rolling back? what feedback did you give?. again, please better stick to articles if you can't do something right like at least, not install it on your main device. clueless people, hope a car will hit you, maybe the hit will actually make you stop doing these "1 day trial" and whatever crap you call it, without giving valid and important feedback. I am glad your phone broke and I hope it burns by it self too ^______________^
  • ... such an idiot.
  • Its not a bad thing to roll back if they ddnt install the preview microsoft would not have known about this issue
  • So very immature comment. Microsoft should have been minimum standards to release a preview OS. I mean at least they already fixed the crucial function. When you can't turn on the internet connection settings or turn back up the notification tray, these are not bugs, that's another story...
  • Really dude?! You mad bro?
  • Every person has his option to downgrade if he isnt comfy. Thats the reason that software is made. Why are you mad? coz u didnt get to 'SEE' Windows 10? Burn
  • I had a problem on my lumia 1320 i installed windows 10 but then there were lot of bugs outlook mail n calender kept crashin so i decided to reset my phone....what a pleasant suprise the out of the box apps were missing such as outlook mail calender and a dialer setting wer not usable i cudnt reset my lumia for the second time the sim was not working my phone wasnt working..then i had revert back to windows cyan... M gna wait for better builds of windows 10
  • This happened to me too on my Lumia 1020... Luckily it was in warranty and AT&T replaced it for free.
  • People I you don't have experience in tech previews or any tech experience please refrain from installing such updates. I have a Lumia 520 and I have over ten years tech experience I had windows 10 tech preview installed and I rolled back the software no problem in now back on windows phone 8.1 update 1 on preview for devs and was waiting On a more stable release of WP10. Because of this Microsoft has pulled it so that genuine tech savvy people such as myself cannot get the OS.
  • You have no idea what you are talking about. It's the rollback software itself that randomly bricks the phone. And I'm not talking about "oh my lumia is stuck on a red screen with the Nokia logo" bricked, I'm talking about completely bricked. Phone is dead, doesn't turn on, isn't recognized by the MS and Nokia recovery software (even the old and trusty Nokia Suite can't detect the phone), doesn't respond to the hard reset and flash mode key combinations. It could happen to you as well, since it's completely outside of user control and happens BECAUSE of the rollback software.
  • pay the "know it alls' no mind....mine is bricked too while trying to revert & some clown had the nerve to tell me i was warned...i wasn't warned that the windows recovery tool could brick your phone
  • My 520 with W10 tp would not let me get to settings. So I could not even tell what version I was running. Nor could I do a reset. So I tried the recovery tool which essentially bricked the phone. I tried all key combinations...nothing working. Recovery tool does not see the phone. It's essentially stuck on the red screen with big white letters that says NOKIA. No cogs, no exclamation. On reboot, the att logo shows for 1/2 second, then right away to the red screen with white logo. I will try to fully drain the battery and then fully charge and pray that it gets back to a resetable state. It's my backup phone but the kids were having fun with it until I tried the upgrade from 8.1 to W10 build xxxx.
  • No such luck. Draining the battery did not help. What now?
  • Pray to god.. That MS finds a solution for it
  • I'm not sure why people throw their hands up in the air telling at MS. Who warned people this was a technical preview which is inherently buggy and flight asking for users to help retort bugs. So don't install it on your daily driver.
  • visited Nokia center yesterday to bring back my phone to life.
  • and were they able to?
  • Not in my case.
    They asking to replace motherboard
  • same here
  • Good
  • I'm one of those to which it happened and reported it in the Technet forums.   I hope they find a way to fix these bricked phones, I'm stuck on a Siemens dumbphone for now :/
  • I have a Lumia 525 and I did roll back perfectly fine. I used the Windows Recovery tool too and not the older Nokia tool. But the firmware I flashed was old, very old. It was the firmware I had to download when I had to roll back from Preview for Developers to get Lumia Cyan. So if anyone needs the firmware package for your bricked device you can ping me on twitter (handle : rabbit00010) and I will provide it to you. :)
  • some days ago i updated my 520 to windows10 preview update now i am rolling back to 8.1 but my recovery tool1.1.0 downloaded pakage but of 1.60 of Gb (Windows Technical preview x86EnGb) named on my desktop what happend and what about downloaded file ?? where is 8.1 please tell me
  • -520
  • -620
  • ...
  • I'm with a C2-02
  • Hard resetting and rolling back both erase your data, demanding backup, or clean install. Hard resetting the phone first should be tried in many cases? I mean, hard reset solves lots of problems with W10. Of course, there are those who are sure they need to roll back instantly. Just trying to help here. 2 cents. Cheers!
  • I also installed Win 10 but it just s. U. C. K. S so I downgraded again to win 8.1 with the help of Lumia software recovery tool.
  • What a disaster
  • Hey everybody!I have a lumia 530 and i succesfully upgraded my phone from 8.1 to 10 and my choose was a big fault, better we wait the final version caz it's horrible with most problems, bugs and crashes.
  • That's why it's called a preview!
  • This mean that if I roll back to win 8.1 denim therefore I can't install win10 tech preview again please reply
  • Good news right there.  That is where the bulk of the mass whining orginates.
  • Cortana not working.
  • Just a tip for those experiencing this problem: Try the hardware-based reset tool to do a hard reset. For example, hold the power/volume down buttons until it restarts, then as soon as you see the Nokia logo, hold the volume down button. You will then see and exclamation mark. Plug the phone into a charger, then press the following keys in order: Volume Up, Volume Down, Power, Volume Down. This will reset the phone. I had to reset my 521 several times before it would run stably enough. You may think your phone is "bricked", but it just takes a little finagling to get it going again.
  • I'm pretty sure most people go into this knowing there will be bugs but still expect basic functionality to be there. There were so many problems with basic functionality on my 1020 I rolled back. Hell, even the insider app used to share your experience would not run. Internet sharing being non-functional was deal breaker.
  • why is anyone rolling back, this is a not a production OS so you should only be installing it to play & test. I have installed it on my spare 520, and yes it is horrible but I expect it to improve with each new release.
  • Hey, i have the same problem with a Lumia 630. I'm not able to return to 8.1 because recovery tool can't find my phone, even if it's recharging with the USB.
There were no more available: settings, phone, keyboard, messages, search...
I need some help to return 8.1. Is there any other way to turn 8.1?
    Thank you so much all
  • Windows phone 10 is a horrible experience..
  • Yea, its very rough around the edges. I expected them to be a bit further alog at this point.
  • No, the complete idea behind w10 is shit.
  • when they say they gonna work with those who have had issues reverting to 8.1,how will that be done???....tried reverting & from staurday afternoon the phone has been dead 4 days now...i'll be patient though
  • Try the nokia software recovery tool.
  • So what happend to those who have bricked phones? Are they shit outta luck or is MS replacing/fixing them????
  • Managed to roll back here, wouldn't be surprised if many are doing so - the WP10TP is a mess. Yes, it's alpha - but far more alpha than one would expect for public testing. What's worse is that it makes 8.1 feel like an OS made by the gods. It's not 'early days' (MS will most likely roll WP10 out this year) so it seems like W10 could be an absolute shamble. IMO, they've got the nippiness and UI consistency of 8.1 to contend with if they want WP10 to be successful.
  • some days ago i updated my 520 to windows10 preview update now i am rolling back to 8.1 but my recovery tool1.1.0 downloaded pakage but of 1.60 of Gb (Windows Technical preview x86EnGb) named on my desktop what happend and what about downloaded file ?? where is 8.1
  • When I rolled back my O2 1020 it was loaded with a German O2 rom. I had to download new keyboard and speech but all is working ok, does anyone here know how I can get back O2 uk rom?
  • my L620 is bricked. I should have used "lumia recovery tool". what i did i followed windowscentral suggestion "windows phone recovery tool" and my phone is dead. i didn't even know "windows phone recovery tool" exist. I will never rely on windows central again. I would use lumia recovery tool by myself if i didn't read windows central.
  • I rolled back on my 525, at first i used nokia software recovery tool but it fail. Afterward i reset my phone, my phone restart at first then reset then i connect capble and try to reinstall through nokia recovery tool, it run faster and success. You can try on it. Good luck!
Note: Dont do anything after your phone which restart at first. Let it at first step. The step of choosing language.
  • It's not worth putting on any phone. I can't even turn cellular data on, on my l920 with the win 10 preview
  • It's proper manky isn't it!!!
  • The preview for developers for 8.1 was very good so i think everybody expected win 10 to be similar in functionality. It's really a joke and they should've never released it.
  • How to download
  • Mine got bricked while updating to windows 10 twice bt I rolled it back easily
  • my lumia 520 suffered from same problem. I went to Nokia care point and those people replaced the motherboard of my lumia for 3000 INR (50 $). now, its healthy again and working like a new set.
now OS is windows phone 8.1 obviously.
  • I used the desktop recovery tool for my 1520 from win 10 back to 8.1
Didn't take long. Had to take it off my phone. Was to buggy.... Awaiting for the next build. Hopefully there will be done improvement. But I have to say the outlook app on win 10 is amazing!!
  • bricked my lumia 620
  • Same problem with lumia 535 dual sim. I had to take it back to "nokia care" to roll it back to Windows 8.1
  • So what about those Lumia 520 owners who have already installed Windows 10 Technical Preview on their phones - should they continue to be on the Technical Preview or (assuming both Microsoft Software Recovery Tool as well as Lumia Software Recovery Tool fail) should they wait for the release of another mechanism to roll back to Windows Phone 8.1?
  • I started to unlike Windows 10 :P
  • My 520 was farked after putting 10 on it, it did hang on the rollback but I fixed it using the Lumia Recovery software....the rebranded Nokia Software Updater for retail.
  • Any idea if MS is addressing the fix ?
  • I Hope MS finds something for my device to come back to life. Or i'm gonna hate them for the rest of my life -_-
  • Just use Nokia Care Suite instead of Windows Phone recovery tool. It works just fine.
  • I wish i knew this before it bricked my phone
  • my lumia 520 suffered from same epidemic disease. I went to Nokia care point and those people replaced the motherboard of my lumia for 3000 INR (50 $). now, its healthy again and working like a new set.
now OS is windows phone 8.1 obviously. my phone was OUT OF WARRANTY

  • Thank god.... I registered for win 10 preview.... But somehow I was not getting the preview update. I asked many people but none did replied.... Now I think I am blessed....
  • You can use Lumia system recovery tool 5.0.7, dats d latest version.... It will roll back ur phone to last official update ur phone had received.... I too bricked my phone yesterday with windows phone recovery tool bt I managed to get it back to work with Lumia system recovery tool...... During installation it will fail a lot of times till 50%..... All u have to do is when an error occurred, repeat d process...... Choose option "my phone is unable to start" or something like dat appears on d very first screen and follow d instructions

  • I had a red screen with nokia logo issue last week and I tried to contact nokia care they said they could not flash my mobile. So I tried to flash ROM on my lumia 525 mobile . When I was trying to flash I got failed many times but when I retry everytime it shown some progress in the installation. So tried again again. Finally I recovered my lumia 525. Thank God...... Things I did to recover my phone: Before flash Rom just watch this video video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhl6o9O4_Ps  Prequisite Tools: 1. Navifirm plus to download firmware http://www.symbian-toys.com/download.aspx?file=NaviFirmPlus_3.2.zip 2. Nokia care suite 5.0 http://nokia-care-suite.en.lo4d.com/    Note : It will Erase everything from the phone. Do it at your own risk.
  • hai my lumia 720 is updated to 10  preview.now i wish to go back to 8.1.when i reset my phone it loading to 10 preview only. how can i get factory format in lumia 720.
  • There is nothing to do with the windows 10 TP as it was installed in our phones smoothly, so dont blame it.. The recovery tool is the culprit.. People who used the tool without even installing the TP also got this problem by just recovering their phone using the software. Microsoft only told us to install the TP at our own risk, they havent ever told not to use the recovery tool. So they should find a fix for all our bricked phones or should replace or repair it for free. I dont think the newly released WPRT 1.2.4 would fix all the bricked phones. We should only blame Microsoft for ending up our phones like this. Also 52X-series are not the only phones that got bricked, some 620 n 920 also got the same issue..
  • hey heil me when i download windos 10 on my phone its downloaded but it has problemb that is when it gone for restart it not restart and not open help me
