WPCentral First Look: Podcasts! for WP7 [Video]

While the Zune software on Windows Phone 7 is quite powerful, the ability to find and stream podcasts on the go is quite limited. We take a quick look at the freeware app Podcasts! by Melting Bot Software and show why it's a must have if you listen to or watch podcasts away from home.

You can grab Podcasts! right here.

Daniel Rubino is the Editor-in-chief of Windows Central, head reviewer, podcast co-host, and analyst. He has been here covering Microsoft since 2007 when this site was called WMExperts (and later Windows Phone Central). His interests include Windows, Microsoft Surface, laptops, next-gen computing, and for some reason, watches. Before all this tech stuff, he worked on a Ph.D. in linguistics and ran the projectors at movie theaters, which has done absolutely nothing for his career.

  • Is there any way to add a custom podcast? None of the podcasts I listen to are available.
  • I'd set an expectation for yourself of "proof on concept" for this app. It doesn't have any sort of local library or playlist, downloads, or ability to add a podcast of your choice not in its directory. I'm just happy that this is one step closer to un-tethering WP7 from the desktop.
  • I would love for the next WPcentral podcast to come out so I can test the app. :)
  • A lot of video channels are giving connection errors. Unfortunately, many of those channels are the ones I really want to stream. This happened over 3G and Wi-Fi. One good thing I noticed - for fellow Samsung Focus users - is that the video quality is superb! I had originally feared that the quality of streaming video was limited by Samsung due to what I witnessed when I watched youtube videos and movie trailers through apps like MSN Movie and Fandango etc etc. But the video quality delivered through this app is outstanding. The Cnet HD feed quality is breathtaking and takes advantage of the SAMOLED screen. The blacks are so deep..almost too deep. And I was able to stream the Cnet feed over 3g!!!
I hope the network connection quirks can be worked out soon.
