Apps

Microsoft will offer touch-optimized Office apps for Windows, but there's a big catch; the company will launch those versions alongside the release of Windows 10, which won't happen until sometime in 2015. Microsoft didn't offer any other information on those touch-based Windows Office apps, but it did show a screenshot of a preview version of PowerPoint for Windows 10.

Reachme is a Windows Phone app that offers a simple means of sharing your location with others. The app is a Microsoft Garage project and lets you send your location, along with turn-by-turn directions to get to that location. While sharing your location with Reachme is presented in simple fashion, to share your location the recipient will need a Microsoft Account, be listed in your contacts and have Reachme installed on their Windows Phone.

All of which does give Reachme a rather restrictive feel that will likely tarnish any appeal the app has to offer. The app has potential and I can see it coming in handy, but Reachme needs a option of sharing your location without the need for the recipient to have a Microsoft account and Reachme installed.

WhatsApp will continue to offer its service for free to users in developing countries like India. Vice-president for business development Neeraj Arora stated that low debit and credit card penetration was the main reason for not collecting the $1 annual fee the service charges users in North America and Europe.

Yes, WhatsApp now has blue checks for read messages

WhatsApp is worth billions of dollars, and there seems to be a good reason for that: many of you are using it, at least according to the flood of tips we are now getting.

Today on the backend for WhatsApp they have evidently thrown a switch to make the double checks blue for when someone reads your messages. Previously, they were white, ahem.

Just yesterday, Microsoft detailed some changes coming to Cinemagraph's backend through OneDrive and today, that updated app is now available. Labeled as Lumia Cinemagraph Beta, the app can be downloaded through the Store though currently the link is not searchable (so you need the app's direct link, found below).

The biggest changes in this version affect how you share Cinemagraphs detailed in the Beta release notes.

Quicky is an interesting Windows Phone app that creates app shortcuts for your Windows Phone Notifications Center in slightly roundabout way. You essentially send yourself notifications that, with the help of a little bit of coding, serve as shortcuts to launch particular apps or games.

The app is the product of 16 year old Windows Phone developer Han Swinkels and while the concept may not appeal to everyone, Quicky is a well presented Windows Phone title. I did run into a few bugs that need ironing out, but overall the app comes across as a creative way to access your Windows Phone apps and games.
