Weekly photo contest: Trees

After last weeks more technical challenge, this week we're going back to a more simple topic for the weekly photo contest; trees. But even the simplest of topics can produce some incredible shots. The one up top, for example, isn't a particularly fancy setting, but it's one of the first outdoor shots I've been able to take using Rich Capture on the Lumia 830.

So, that's this weeks task. And a little heads up that we'll still be closing it down in the usual time frame, but we'll be skipping a new contest next week on account of being at various shows around the world. But before all of that, who won last weeks, Tilt Shift, inspired contest?

You probably already know that Windows Central streams Xbox games every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday night via Twitch. We even give out free copies of the games we stream on the weekends. We've built up a loyal community who tune in to see us play games, enjoy the commentary of the hosts, and chat with their fellow readers and viewers.

What you might not know is that I also stream non-Xbox games every Monday, just for fun. But tonight's stream will be special because we're streaming three games from popular Windows developer 10tons! We'll be playing Sparkle 2 and King Oddball (both for Windows Phone and Windows 8) and Crimsonland, a twin-stick shooter for Steam that will be coming to mobile Windows platforms soon.

Update: The stream has ended. Continue reading to see the full video replay, my impressions of each game, and a list of tonight's winners!

Weekly Photo Contest: Tilt Shift

The past couple of weeks our weekly photo contests have taken on some quite broad themes, but this week we're going to try something a little different. We're focusing on one specific effect, and that's Tilt Shift. You may know it best as the effect that can turn city scenes into appearing to be miniature villages.

So, it's going to test your editing as well as your photo taking. The Lumia Creative Studio is one of a number of apps that will help you produce the effect, which I did up top with the image of a train platform taken on my Lumia 830.

But before all that, who won last week's pattern inspired contest? Let's find out!

The Witcher 3 is set to be one of the year's biggest role-playing games when it arrives on Xbox One, Windows, and Playstation 4 this May. The third game in the Witcher series differentiates itself from other open-world action-RPGs with its dark and mature storyline filled with meaningful player choices and memorable sidequests.

To help prepare our readers for The Witcher 3, Windows Central has begun a new weekly Twitch series focused on The Witcher 2. Every Tuesday night at 8pm Central (9pm Eastern, 6pm Pacific), we play through another section of the game while you guys watch the stream at Twitch.tv/Eastxtwitch. This week's stream has ended, but you can still watch the full replay after the break.

Did you miss the previous episode of our Witcher Twos-day series? Don't worry; we've got a full write-up that will get you up to speed – complete with screenshots from the stream!

Weekly photo contest: Patterns

Last week's photo contest was inspired by our current busy season of travel. This week, it's the same source of inspiration that provided me an idea for a much different theme. Patterns. The image up top I took at London King's Cross station on my Lumia 830 – with a little Photoshop tweaking after – of the roof. It's the same pattern repeated across the main concourse and when lit up at night is quite striking.

So, that's what we're looking at this week. Patterns are present in so many different areas of day-to-day life that it's easy to come up with an idea. Yet still leaves plenty of scope to be extra creative. But, first, some housekeeping. And that means announcing who won last week's competition.

Weekly photo contest: Public transport

We're in the middle of the early year event season right now and for many of us at Windows Central and Mobile Nations at large that means breaking out of the office and going outside. In most cases we'll avoid driving when public transport is available, so what better theme for this weeks photo contest!

But first, a little housekeeping. Head below to recap and see who won last weeks "Cold" themed contest!

Weekly photo contest: Cold

After a brief hiatus, the Windows Central weekly photo contests are back! Now we've had the holidays, CES and the Windows 10 event come and go, it's time to return to (some) normality. So, we've got a new contest for all the Windows Phone photographers out there with a theme that's pretty apt for a lot of people right now. Cold.

That's not to say that you need to take a picture of snow. Be imaginative, be creative, and show us absolutely anything you think represents cold! The image up top was taken by our own Daniel Rubino with Lumia Camera 5 on the Lumia 930 with a little added HDR for good measure.

World War II-era third-person shooter Sniper Elite III is one of my favorite Xbox One games of 2014. The gameplay combines equal parts stealth and gruesome sniping kills, all in the service of thwarting the Nazi expansion into Africa.

Last year we caught early word of an upcoming Sniper Elite III Ultimate Edition that bundles the main game with its downloadable content. Today, publisher 505 Games has officially announced the Ultimate Edition will be coming in March – for the low price of $39.99 on Xbox One and $29.99 on 360.

To celebrate the impending Ultimate Edition, Windows Central is proud to partner with 505 Games on a massive Sniper Elite III giveaway. This Saturday we're streaming the original Sniper Elite III on Twitch and giving out more than twenty copies of the game for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Steam. This is one stream you won't want to miss!
