Groupon

Like getting a great price on things? Don’t like the green color of Groupon? Or just a die-hard LivingSocial.com fan? Either answer will bring you to the new official, LivingSocial app that is now available on the Windows Phone 8 Store.

LivingSocial (www.livingsocial.com) is a similar service to Groupon in that it highlights local deals for pre-purchase. Think plays, lessons, events and various services around your area for a better idea. The company has been around for years but it seems like Groupon, for better or worse, has had greater media coverage, resonating more with the public.

If you're looking for a very good, entry level Windows Phone and don't necessarily need a Windows Phone 8 device, Groupon has a deal for you. They are offering an unlocked HTC Radar for $172.99.

The 3.8" screened device sports a 1GHz processor, 8GB of storage, a 5MP rear camera with BSI sensor and is GSM carrier compatible.  It may not have all the bells and whistles of other Windows Phones but overall, the Radar is a solid performer.

The official Foursquare app for Windows Phone just got bumped to version 2.12 and includes “bug fixes, Thai and Indonesian languages added and application compatibility with Windows Phone 8”. All of that sounds good and people may be wondering what “compatibility with Windows Phone 8” actually means. Turns out, not much.

What we mean by that is there are no new functions here—no fast app resume, no doublewide tile, nothing for the Lockscreen, etc. It just means it should work properly on Windows Phone 8 and indeed, it does. We’re not knocking Foursquare as we’re sure they’ll release a WP8 version in the near future, but as of right now, this is quite minor.

You know, we’re never shy of a great deal and it looks like we just turned up a corker of an offer. How does a Lumia 710 unlocked and offline sound to you?

That’s a cool $141 saving on the list price which is normally $300.00.

The Lumia 710 was Nokia’s first budget handset and came out along with the Lumia 800 but was a little overshadowed by the polycarbonate hero phone. The Lumia 710 has tons going for it, often the photos of these devices does not do it justice, its actually quite distinctive. I have had plenty of time with the 710 and highly recommend it, it has the same internals as the 800 too. Want to know more....?

Missing or just hiding?

We’ve continued to document the small issues plaguing the Windows Phone Store as of late and we want to clear up one that we’re getting a lot of tips on: missing apps.

The issue comes up when you try to search for certain apps, namely Facebook, Groupon and WhatsApp for some of you. In short, they’re missing from search results and therefore you can’t download them.

But we should point out that all of the direct-links to those apps still work and will allow you to download the program. In fact, we’ll list the direct links for you down below.

During last week’s Nokia presser, the company unveiled a new list of exclusive apps coming to the Lumia line. While some details were given, today the company has taken to the blogs to go into even more information.

Most of the apps seem to feature NFC--the ability to wirelessly share information and data with other NFC-enabled devices. NFC for many is the future as there is no pairing and it's relatively low-power to use. Although it is still growing for commerce transactions, the ability to tap someone else's phone and instantly send them over info is tempting...

For those looking to get into Groupon, the popular deal finder, but had a little thing like the Atlantic Ocean preventing them from using it, we're hearing that version 2.5 adds support for Europe.

We saw in v2.0 Mango support added with a more robust Live Tile and better deal alerts. We also heard some users had bugs and issues with that one as well, something we hope v2.5 will go a long way in addressing. Plus with this Europe addition, the service can greatly expand as users take more advantage of the app.

Grab Groupon here in the Marketplace. Let us know if it's working for you and what country in comments! Thanks, deeper2k, for the heads up!

Love it or hate (we're the latter, but whatever), Groupon is big and their official app just got the Mango treatment is rightly deserves. So for those of you who have it or for those who didn't know about it, you'll want to go and get this admittedly nice looking app a spin.

Hitting version 2.0, the developers went beyond the usual fast-app switching which is automatic for a Mango app. Instead, they've embraced a bunch of Mango features, making this quite a worthy update:

"You can now browse, purchase, and redeem Groupon Now! deals, as well as pin any division or Groupon Now! to the home screen as two-sided live tiles. We've also updated our push notification service so that you get notified when deals are available for you!"

What's to not like about all of that? Not much, so head here to the Marketplace and get it now. Thanks, Matthew S., for the tip using our app!

Groupon v1.3 adds live tile

Groupon has released version 1.3 of their popular WP7 app.  This latest iteration sports a live tile, so you can pounce on that 15% off Yankee Candle deal before it flickers out.  In addition to the already great features, like locating, buying, and redeeming deals right from your WP7 phone, you can now share them with friends in v1.3.  Early reviews of the update report that it is faster and smoother as well.

Get it here (Zune link).

We first noticed that Groupon had an official app for Windows Phone 7 way back in February during the Mobile World Congress. And about 2 months later, it's finally here:

Groupon features unbeatable deals each day on the best stuff to do in cities across the U.S. and Canada. With our Windows Phone 7 app you can buy deals, access your purchased Groupons, find the ones that are nearby, and redeem them electronically. Never print another Groupon!

The app is developed by Chaotic Moon Studios and looks excellent. Combined with SlickDeals and you have all your bargains covered. Our first impression is we really like the UI and design--very classy and Metro inspired. No sign of a Live Tile though in v1.0, just to be clear. You can grab the app right here, right now. Thanks, Manos P., for the heads up!

Besides showing off the new hubs, multitasking, IE9 and Skydrive support coming later in 2011 (and those were only the announced features, there's evidently a lot more), there was one surprise app that we saw: Groupon (see their site)

For those who haven't been following, Groupon is the biggest "deal" website on the 'net, helping consumers find the best offers and lowest prices for a variety of items and services. They're also known for turning down a $6 billion offer from Google to buy them out. Yes, we said billion.

Anyways, this super service is coming to Windows Phone in an official capacity sometime soon--and it even features a Live Tile with updated deals (similar to that just-as-awesome Slick Deals app available now). All we know is this is great news for WP7 to land yet another major brand.
