It's challenging to dismiss Microsoft's presence in the generative AI sector, despite recent reports claiming that its extensive AI efforts have been rendered futile and that there's virtually nobody finding any use for its offerings, such as Copilot. The tech giant has made elaborate measures to leverage its massive Windows operating system market share to push its AI agenda. There are even future plans to evolve the operating system into an agentic platform.
Recently, in a broad interview with Bloomberg, Suleyman revealed that he keeps close tabs and is in frequent contact with his peers in the AI space, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and Google DeepMind's AI Chief Demis Hassabis, whom they also co-founded DeepMind (via Fortune).
The executive had some interesting insights and thoughts about each of these leaders' leadership styles, amongst other things. Right off the bat, Suleyman described Sam Altman as "courageous," potentially referring to his zeal to keep going even when OpenAI was in turmoil amid bankruptcy claims.
The ChatGPT maker continues to pursue advanced AI developments and is currently building massive data centers worldwide to meet the high demand for computing power, pushing ChatGPT to the next level.
He may well turn out to be one of the great entrepreneurs of our generation. He’s certainly achieved a lot. He’s building data centers at a faster rate than anyone in the industry, and if he can pull it off, it will be pretty dramatic.
Microsoft AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman
OpenAI has been under investor scrutiny, primarily due to its exorbitant spending on sophisticated AI development projects without having established a proper profitability path. Recent reports indicate that the AI firm generates up to $13 billion per year from ChatGPT and LLM access fees, but spends up to $1.4 billion on computing.
While it may seem like OpenAI is biting more than it can chew with its spending, Sam Altman recently indicated that he projects the company will generate up to $100 billion in revenue by 2027.
Onto DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Suleyman revealed that the friendship they fostered when founding DeepMind continues to blossom even if they are now corporate rivals working for different entities. He further revealed that he texted Hassabis to congratulate him on Google's immense success with Nano Banana, Gemini 3, and AlphaFold.
"I think he’s a great thinker and he’s a good polymath," Suleyman added. "He’s made massive contributions in the field, multiple times. He’s truly exceptional.”
Suleyman concluded by sharing his thoughts about Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk. While referring to him as a "bulldozer," Suleyman indicated that:
“He’s kind of got superhuman capabilities to bend reality to his will and has, you know, pretty incredible track record. And somehow he sort of mostly manages to pull off what appears to be impossible.”
However, he admitted that Elon Musk has a "different kind of set of values," but “I kind of like that he speaks his mind. He’s very unfiltered.”
