What you need to know

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is an incredibly popular first-person shooter from Activision.
  • Images of a mode called "Warzone" were floating around for weeks.
  • The battle royale mode launches as a free-to-play experience on March 10.
  • The complete Call of Duty: Modern Warfare costs $60 on Amazon.

It's no secret that Infinity Ward has been developing a battle royale mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. However, it looks like it's called "Warzone." According to a report by MSPoweruser, "players of the newly-updated version of Modern Warfare have been able to glitch their way through the recently added Classified menu... Players will be able to run a training course, host a squad for teams, and matchmake into a random squad... Warzone was also recently leaked through an accidentally released promotional image which was promptly deleted."

Today, even more details about the game leaked on Twitter. A promotional image surfaced again and it said that the title was a standalone free-to-play experience. Firstly, as expected, it supports cross-play just like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Secondly, it'll be a last-person-standing or last-team-standing experience. Lastly, classic maps have been integrated to the larger map so you'll recognize familiar areas.

Just now, we received confirmation from Activision that the free-to-play mode was launching on March 10. You can read an excerpt from the press release below.

Call of Duty is about to serve up a new massive combat experience with the game-changing, free-to-play Call of Duty: Warzone – available tomorrow. Warzone is an all-new experience from the world of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, where up to 150 players can squad up with friends and drop into a massive online combat arena packed with non-stop action and endless fun. At launch, players will team up and fight as a trio across two epic modes, which includes a new take on the popular all-out survival Battle Royale mode with new and innovative ways to play, and an all-new original mode called Plunder, where teams battle to collect the most in-match Cash.

Are you excited for Warzone? Will you play it? Let us know. You can take a look at the launch times below. However, it seems like new players will have to download the entire Call of Duty: Modern Warfare client – that's around 100 GB – if they want to jump in.
