Darksiders III was announced many months ago, and since then we haven't heard much about the title. All we knew was that it would focus on a new protagonist and continue the story of the existing games. On a technical front, THQ Nordic made it clear that Darksiders III would support Xbox One X. No further details were provided by the publisher at the time.
Ever since that announcement, Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro owners have been asking for more information. It's become a competition of sorts, even though the Xbox One X is 1.8 teraflops more powerful. While we know that it'll achieve 30 FPS on all consoles, we didn't know what resolution the game would run at. Today, a spokesperson from THQ Nordic provided us with the exact specifications. We were provided the following statement.
Darksiders III features a dynamic resolution, as most recent games do. While constantly running in native 4K at 30FPS, in certain situations the resolution will be scaled down to guarantee to optimal gaming experience and a high frame rate.
Darksiders III targets native 4K resolution on Xbox One X, however, it's dynamic to maintain performance. When asked how low the resolution would drop, the spokesperson replied, "It's completely dynamic to run stable all the time. If enough performance is available, it goes up to native 4K. At worst, it goes down to Full HD." Hopefully the image quality won't drop to 1080p on Xbox One X because that would look incredibly blurry on a 4K display. It seems that the PlayStation 4 Pro also uses similar parameters, but the console is significantly weaker than Microsoft's machine, so it's likely that the resolution will be much lower at any given time. We'll have to wait for a complete analysis from Digital Foundry to find out.
In Darksiders III, players return to a post-apocalyptic Earth. The game is a hack-and-slash adventure where you assume the role of Fury in her quest to hunt down and dispose of the Seven Deadly Sins. Fury is by far the most unpredictable and enigmatic of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. She has to succeed where many have failed when it comes to bringing balance to the forces that now ravage Earth.
There are a few versions of the game available preorder. The Deluxe Edition and Blades & Whip Edition give gamers 24-hour early access to the title and a discount. Darksiders III should launch on November 27, 2018 for Xbox One and other platforms.
