Despite the hype, Battlefield 6 fails to dent Call of Duty's reign in the US ahead of Black Ops 7 launch — but there's a big caveat
Battlefield 6 doesn't appear to have meaningfully impacted Call of Duty's playerbase in the U.S, at least prior to the launch of REDSEC.
Publisher Electronic Arts' (EA) latest first-person shooter Battlefield 6 launched back on October 10, and since it arrived, it's been putting up some pretty impressive numbers, with the game selling over 7 million copies in its first three days.
Since then, Circana executive director Mat Piscatella has shared updates on the most-played games in the U.S on a weekly basis. For the week ending October 25, Battlefield 6 continued to hold strong as the most-played game on Steam, ranking at the #6 and #7 spots on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles, respectively.
It's a strong hold, but notably, despite the fervor around Activision's Call of Duty and Battlefield going head-to-head this year, Call of Duty HQ retained its place as the #2 game on Xbox and PlayStation, with no decrease to the existing playerbase that can be seen.
Now, there are some important details to keep in mind. Call of Duty HQ includes last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as well as the free-to-play Battle Royale, Call of Duty: Warzone.
This unified launcher used to include even more games, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 were both de-coupled from it back in July.
Another large caveat here is that this doesn't include the launch of REDSEC, the free-to-play Battle Royale mode for Battlefield 6 that launched on October 28. REDSEC has seen mixed reactions from players so far, but it also drove Battlefield 6 to some high concurrent numbers on Steam, with over 500,000 players online at once.

Finally, Call of Duty is still available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (even if performance and image quality aren't great) while Battlefield 6 is locked to the latest generation of console hardware.
With all of that in mind, it'll be fascinating to see where Battlefield 6 ranks once REDSEC is included. It'll also be interesting to see just what happens with the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, with the Treyarch and Raven-led game set to launch on Nov. 14, 2025.
Black Ops 6 managed to become the best-selling game of 2024 in the U.S. despite also being included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Will Black Ops 7 become the best-selling game of 2025 in the U.S? We'll have to wait and see.
Personally, I'm happy to see some real competition between the two, and players are better off with both series thriving and the developers reacting quickly to feedback.
