Microsoft halts PC Insider Preview builds to prepare for the Unified Update Platform

Microsoft has today announced that they are temporarily halting Windows 10 PC Insider Preview build availability as they begin to switch their updating systems over from the old delivery method to the new Unified Update Platform.

What does this mean, exactly? Well if you're an Insider and you're not running the latest Insider Preview build, you're now going to have to wait a few more days before you can download it as Microsoft is no longer offering builds on the fast and slow ring.

From the Microsoft blog post:

UPDATE 12/2: We are getting ready to start releasing PC builds to Insiders using UUP. To prepare for this, we are going to pause all PC builds for both the Fast and Slow rings starting this evening (Friday 12/2). We will begin flighting the latest builds via UUP starting with our internal rings first then to Insiders based on each ring's promotion criteria. We're excited to be able to release builds for PC to Insiders using UUP! Mobile builds are not impacted by this.

It's unclear how long this pause in build availability will be, but considering Microsoft wants to test out their own method internally first, it could be a few days at the very least. Stick to Windows Central for more news regarding the Insider Preview.

  • I think this is good. We just have to wait a lil.
  • Does that mean update build will download similar to the old service packs? ie only download files that are actually changed between builds?
  • Yes.
  • No more 2-3GB downloads for each new build then
  • I'm definitely look forward to the reduced download sizes!
  • Which is awesome! I wished this was been implemented during early Windows 10 launch though for November update though, but well at least its finally here. Now I'm hoping for smarter Windows Update where there is less restart as possible. Only restarting services without interrupting the user session. Only restarts for kernel and other deep under-the-hood changes.
  • Which hopefully translates to faster update installs
  • I guess there is no school like the old school
  • Nice! Definitely worth the minor nuisance of waiting longer for the next update in order to get the improved program going forward! I'll keep it tuned to Windows Central for the latest on when I should rush to the updates section of the settings app on my 2-in-1 (my gaming PC is not on the insider program - maybe I'd be safe to put it in the release build ring?)
  • Ya, Release Preview is ideal for gaming PCs. Don't dare beyond that.
  • Whatever build they've got me on in the slow ring keeps bluescreening! :(
  • you should check your hard disk then or your drivers!!!
  • Ah, the good old fashioned BSoD. How I miss you so. =P Seriously though, usually those are indeed hardware related, HDD has the highest failure rate of all components. I would check that with a utility program first.
  • Check your system log or reliability monitor to find the culprit(s).
  • I've run a chkdsk and sfc /scannow and found nothing. The culprit of the bluescreens is anything from win32k.sys (i think?) to video driver issues, which is why I assumed it was a problem with this build. Using SP4.
  • Try keep sending that issue to Feedback Hub. Send it as a Problem and include diagnostic data. The more, the better chance they will notice. This occasionally happens also on my PC, though fortunately not frequent.
  • When in India?
  • When you leave BRICS
  • When Donald Trump visits India.
  • And when he meet Narendra Modi.
  • Please, stay there.
  • It's "wen in india"
  • Supposedly UUP is active on mobile, but I just see the old way of updating. Just as long as always on mobile.
  • It's not about the install speed but the download size.
  • Really? My 1520 says the download size of the latest fast build is 5.1GB
  • It downloaded in like 3 minutes for me, so that size isn't correct.
  • Yep, was a comparatively small download last time. It won't appear any different, visually, just less is downloaded.
  • 10$ this happened. Programmer named Fred. Fred: "Update system is going to flake out again. Let's use the new system." Other programmer: "Shut up Fred; can you guarantee it's going to work? This is Microsoft after all; our offices are practically abandoned throughout December each year." After release: More users are reporting update problems. Updates paused. Changing to new update system.
  • what !!
  • Yeah, that didn't come out to well, Peter.. Try again :P
  • Meh. I'll ride the downvote train all the way :D
  • A man after my own heart. Best I ever got was -32, or so. I have never seen anyone get over 100 votes either way (positive or negative). Low readership at WC and all.
  • :D thanks
  • Is this why my Xbox hasn't gotten an update on a month since switching from the old preview program to the new Insider program?
  • How do u switch to the new program
  • Microsoft switched from preview program to insider program and drastically changed their app and everything. I was wondering if I missed something in settings. Or if it's automatic. No update in almost a month. Which is extremely rare.
  • My Xbox for it's first update in over a month last night.
  • good
  • So will the release preview and production builds on mobile also be released with the new uup as well?
  • Is uup live for mobiles?
  • Yes
  • By doing this way, we are not able to make our own iso for each build?
  • Good question. Anyone know?
  • Interesting question. We will see I guess when this is finally implemented.
  • Hey, mobile builds SHOULD be impacted by this too.
  • Mobile was done back in September
  • Don't tell him.
  • Removed my own comment.
  • It already active in mobile. It also states in the article that mobile isn't impacted by this.
  • How to attach screenshot WC app??
  • How do you join the insider
  • http://windowscentral.com/how-join-windows-insider-program
  • I'm talking about on the xbox
  • I was on preview on xbox 1, new dashboard arrangement, clubs etc. there were lots of updates in the +4gb region, they recently stopped and after the last update it has changed from preview to insider just like Windows 10 and mobile WP10,, they are currently not taking any more participants
  • Lord knows I have flooded MS with invites of my people...I think one got in.
  • I thnk Nadella s strategy to use users to debug their software may save him some bucks, but severely impact on software quality. It 20 years I only use Ms products, and I never saw so many bugs in Microsoft applications :(
  • I don't think you were looking close enough
  • So, you're saying beta testing software has bugs? So you're saying, previously, when you weren't on beta software, there were less bugs?
    Okay.
  • This is great news! No more bulking downloads! Thumbs up (^_~)
