New Windows 10 Technical Preview 10061 build released

Windows 10
Windows 10

Microsoft has just launched a new build of its Windows 10 Technical Preview, with the version number 10061. Anyone who has enrolled in the Windows Insider Program and are in the Fast Ring should be able to download the new build.

Here's what users can expect in this new build

  • New Mail and Calendar apps: These new apps bring improved performance and a familiar three-pane email UI, with a toggle to quickly move between your email and calendar. Mail includes customizable Swipe Gestures, letting you swipe right or left to take actions like delete, flag, move or mark as read/unread. Also check out the new email authoring experience. Mail leverages the familiar and rich capability of Word to that allows you to easily insert tables, add pictures and use bullets and color to your text. Both the new Mail and Calendar apps support Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail, IMAP, POP and other popular accounts.
  • Start, Taskbar, and Action Center improvements: This build introduces the new black system theme across the Start menu, Taskbar, and Action Center. The Start menu and Taskbar now have transparency and you can also resize the Start menu. We've also enabled support for AutoColor which pulls the primary color from your desktop background. In the Settings app under Personalization, you can adjust the color of Start, Taskbar, and Action Center as well as transparency. Check these settings out and let us know what you think. And based on your feedback, we have moved the power button to the bottom left from the top right of the Start menu to make it more accessible.
  • Continuum improvements: The Taskbar is now more optimized for tablets. Entering Tablet Mode causes the Start button, Cortana, and the Task View buttons to all grow in size and space out to be more touchable. Items in the Notification area also widen to improve touchability. Also, pinned and running apps are removed by default to reduce clutter and simplify the experience. Start and Task View remain available for launching and switching. If you still prefer to see apps on your taskbar, there is an option under Tablet Mode in Settings to turn them back on. We also now offer a setting to boot directly into Tablet Mode. For tablets under 10 inches, this is the default behavior.
  • Task View improvements: We've made several visual updates to Task View. We've refined the window icons, the close buttons, and the thumbnails. These improvements also apply to Alt+Tab and Snap Assist. Task View gets a new icon on the Taskbar too.
  • Virtual Desktop improvements: You can create as many Virtual Desktops as you'd like! When you hit the limit of your display, a new overflow experience now lets you access any one of your desktops. Also, don't forget that we are still eager to hear your feedback to determine the default behavior of the Taskbar across desktops.

Microsoft has also fixed some bugs that were in previous versions:

  • We have fixed have fixed the issue where Indexing of new email in Outlook was not working.
  • We have fixed the issue with Hyper-V preventing you from enabling it.
  • Visual Studio will no longer crash when creating a new Universal app project.
  • We fixed a few issues in Project Spartan. You can now double-click on the titlebar to maximize. We have also made some tweaks to the alignment of the Favorites Bar so that the text and icons no longer appear partially below the bottom of the Favorites Bar.

This new build also supports the new version of the Xbox app for Windows 10, which should be available soon with a number of new features on its own.

  • Looking forward to the new hefty update for phones...
  • When is going to seems faster in India?
  • That didn't work as planned.
  • Hahahahahaha!
  • Yay! Downloading now!
  • Thx guys. U do a nice job. Keep it up
  • So.. the hackers won't have to hack that leak from earlier, lol.  Win32 apps not launching from start menu is a weird bug. (Definitely still looking forward to this update, downloading now).
  • I always try to update using the fast ring option but the update always fails in every build that is why I always wait for the iso file :(
  • Clear the update cache?
  • Have the exact same issue on 3 pcs. Even after a fresh install of 10041 it fails to update to 10049.
  • Window 10 Build 10061 in torrent + Direct links http://talhawebz.blogspot.com/2015/04/window-10-pro-enterprise-technical.html   Enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I had this issue as well, and had tried every recommended fix, such as clearing the update cache, resetting update services, etc... I finally stumbled on a successful workaround. In the Windows Update interface, click to Install updates. Allow it to download the new build, then wait through the "Preparing to Install...." progression. When that is done, it will prompt you to restart the computer. At this point, if you are on wireless, disable your wireless adapter. If you are on a wired connection, disconnect it from your computer. Then restart the comuputer. In my case, the build update was sitting for hours at the 30% mark, then failing and rolling back to the previous build. As soon as I followed this workaround, the update completed successfully.
  • Great update!
  • I'll be waiting for the list of known issues before deciding whether to update now.
  • Good option
  • What's new if anything?
  • We have no idea. Well, except for all the stuff bulleted above that says 'Here's what users can expect in this new build'. lol
  • Not gonna lie, this had me laugh so hard I spit a mouthful of my dinner at the monitor. LMAO
  • This just gets funnier and funnier.
  • You are a funny man Daniel Rubino.
  • All I can think of as a response to this comment is Steve Jobs in the South Park Episode 'HumancentiPad' (S15, E01.) "WHY WONT IT READ!?"
  • Long Live Reynaldo :D
  • Comment of the day!
  • Hahaha sorry guys I didn't read. Lol
  • Ya, we know.
  • Whaaaat?? You didn't???
  • Can't wait til this is an ISO. My tab needs a fresh install.
... But will still update to it now.
    :)
  • Yes!!!  You can update from build 10056 to 10061!  Whew...thought I was going to have to wait for the ISO's.
  • how did you manage to get the update mine still try's to download 10066????
  • Enterprise or Pro?
  • I am using Pro and I kept mashing check for updates a few times and it cleared out the 10066 and offered 10061. I might have rebooted once.
  • The way to do it is simple restart the computer and check for updates again
  • I am getting offered 10066 again after updating to 10061...in need of a clean build.  Heres to hoping that 10061 makes the grade for slow ring and ISO's! A.
  • Tablets shouldn't have desktop taskbars.
  • "If you still prefer to see apps on your taskbar, there is an option under Tablet Mode in Settings to turn them back on. We also now offer a setting to boot directly into Tablet Mode. For tablets under 10 inches, this is the default behavior." and vice versa :) options are great. This is what Windows has always been about and im glad they're at least sticking to that old motto if any.
  • Why not? You need to see which apps are running somehow. Although I would agree that pinning apps to the taskbar is kind of unnecessary...
  • As long as I CAN see them if I need to, I don't want to see the other open apps most of the time. At the BUILD conference that launched windows 8, Microsoft sold the app model to developers as "every pixel on the screen is part of your app." That intrusive behavior is ideal on tables as long as I can still switch to the desktop or between apps quickly, which in windows 8 was as simple as swiping in from the left.
  • So how about auto-hide for the taskbar? That's pretty much the same. I think the more MSFT can eliminate the distinction between the desktop and start screen the better. This was the main source of confusion in Win 8. Swipe up if you're on a touch screen device or click on a button to show it.
  • Windows 8 is over. Long live Windows 10.
  • I disagree
  • They still haven't re-introduced the old task switcher.   Windows 10 is dead for me. I'll get a Windows 8 tablet and not upgrade.
  • What task switcher....windows10 have better than that
  • Yet all of them have a desktop taskbar with time a.o.
  • Only slightly OT, but is your 8.1 license info retained when doing a clean install from ISO? I assume yes, but would rather ask and be right.
  • It's stored in the BIOS in a lot of computers nowadays (not sure if all). So yeah, its retained. Make a recovery disk set before tho, makes you feel safer.
  • I got that answer from Medion, a Lenovo brand, from which I bought a touch notebook in nov 2013. That will surely help Msft to provide service for a devices life span, yeh! :-)
  • Also create a image of your hdd as well, just incase.
  • Well it looks like my 8.1 image was wiped when I was making room for this tablet-impaired tech preview... So it's adapt or perish now I suppose. Could revert, but shortened support cycles make me wary of being a stick in the mud- regardless of how horrid this TP is for tablets.
  • Looking forward to the dark theme, the whiteness of the Action Center is so bad. I hope they bring that to Cortana soon as well.
  • Yes! Exactly.... Can't come to phone to soon enough either.
  • Agreed, I haven't tried any phone builds yet but from what I've seen Cortana looks like ass.
  • It's like the lines are all the wrong thickness, has resolution issues bad.... But, like I always say, trust MS.. They have a good track record for getting things right... But, man is Cortana nasty right now.
  • This^
A lot of text is fuzzy and out of focus. Also small icons on taskbar are now floating in some weird way :-( But this is what I signed up for as an insider, fast ring for life!
  • Im serious... Last year we were in DP by the end of April, or March.... What's taking so long this time❓
  • Amen Dark theme
  • A strange time of day for a release. Still, will stick it on a machine and see what's what.
  • Somewhere it's night.. Somewhere it's day.. So what makes it strange huh? ;)
  • Cos all previous ones have been during PDT office hours
  • Currently running 10049 Enterprise on fast ring.  So far Windows Update only gives me this: There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help - (0x8024402c) We do have some Windows Updates managed by WSUS, registry changes that fixed this before don't seem to work this time.
  • My system completed the download, rebooted and started the install and then rolled back to 10049.  :-(
  • Looks like it will make the update on the second try!
  • Change from Ent to Pro?
  • are you behind a proxy?  That could be your issue
  • Is the feedback app buggy for anyone? Its not working for me lol.... therefore I don't have a direct way of giving feed back (proper channel)...
As I'm dual booting, I ain't nuking everything to get it working. Also I can't get the latest build to install via vmware workstation, which is strange. Previous builds worked fine.. Also it is not just the feedback app, videos and graphical items such as images .gif, .jpg. Icons or logos have intermittent rendering issues. Sometimes uninstalling drivers and reinstalling works. Until windows update force downloads the buggy drivers -.-.
  • Ahh continuum is coming along FINALLY. Now please just give us the option to hide the most used icons to the left of the start screen. The goal is when a user updates to Windows 10 from 8.1 and they are on a tablet they cannot tell the difference from the new start screen to the one in 8.1
  • Don't know why everyone was assuming tablet mode would sake based on the first few previews with Continuuim.
  • I second the option to turn off the tiny icons which I find useless in desktop mode as well
  • Thanks for fixing universal apps before build :)
  • I thought they fixed Outlook indexing in the last tp - been working fine for me since then
  • I wonder if that is going to fix my problem. My apps don't work. Tried everything but nothing seems to work.
  • Is Spartan a universal app or no?? Never really heard much about it.
  • Still having app issues.  New Mail and Cal apps won't stay open.  Xbox app crashes if I connect to xbox and click remote control icon.
  • seems faster..
  • I'm unable to activate this built (Enterprise edition), when entering the provided key, *-T2TD6-233PK, I'm getting an error message that this is a default key that can't be used. But I don't have another key. Any idea?
  • Be sure to run cmd as Admin and run : slmgr /ipk PBHCJ-Q2NYD-2PX34-T2TD6-233PK
  • Thanks this fixed this issue for me!
  • Ooh, downloading football impressive now. Looks like this is more interesting than the phone update this week. I hope spartan supports alt-d now.
  • Officially beginning to panic now about win 10. I don't know how i'd be able to recommend it to anyone using a hybrid over 8.1. Easy enough recommendation on desktops but tablet mode is still simply not efficient. The fact that you can't snap yet while in fullscreen mode is stunning. 8.1 was rough yes but they appear to have thrown out the good ideas it had with everything else.
  • You can snap in fullscreen mode... that's been possible for a long time. You just drag down and drag it on either side of the screen. Almost just like in 8.1
  • You know it's a Technical Preview? It's a long way from being finished. Also, 8.1 rocked - but people weren't prepared to get to know it because people told them it sucked.
  • It just needs a few more things: 1. PIN unlock 2. going out of tablet mode should restore previous windows sizes and positions instead of making postage stamps of all your apps 3. A non-stupid way to access app commands with touch (opening a menu designed for quick access through a button in another menu can't be their final design).
  • 1) is there
    2) I'm not sure
    3) long press
  • Windows 10 is looking pretty amazing so far, but I have a feeling Microsoft will have to delay their planned summer release. They're still figuring out core features and the technical preview is far from finished. Microsoft has a lot of work to finish the OS and then they have even more polishing to do. I'd rather they waited until fall and released a polished, less-buggy OS rather than a just "finished" one filled with bugs sooner.
  • Have a look at what they're doing in relation to future OS updates  Reading between the lines, the update process is becoming much more agile - updates can come thick and fast. Across the ecosystem.
  • Come on back charm bar!
  • I think notification center is the new charm bar
  • Except the charms are still in the hamburger menu, so they are supposed to exist. You can't print from the notification center. They are mouse-accessible, but charms and app menus are still really hard to use via touch.
  • What a surprise birthday cake that Microsoft released for me today. Installing it on all three of my computers.!
  • Re: the Mail App, can anyone report whether it has fixed 8.1's Mail App so you can actually type and not have looooooooooooooooong delays i.......n....b...e....t....w......e.......e.......n l..........e......t........t........e.......r........s? (Seriously, if you are replying to an email that has like more than 100 characters in it, its a joke! I'm just assuming they are going to fix that issue knowing its being replaced soon enough)
  • There will always be issues, serious ones, as long as Microsoft 'concentrates' on developing and improving its iOS apps and 'forgetting' its own Windows and Windows Phone platform
  • I can't install, giving me error, anyone have any suggestions...
  • Hello, two things i notice after the install of 10061, without really playing around with it... 1. Spartan is not working... anybody else has this problem??? 2. Need to activate my copy. How do i do that/???  :(
  • Update from Preview 10049 to 10061 FAILED and I was returned to Windows 7!!!! What gives? "Unable to update to Windows 10 Preview restoring your old version Error 0x8007002C-0x4001C" Unaccaptable!,,anybody else with the same problem?
