Get new firmware updates for the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3

Owners of Microsoft's Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3 tablets should be on the lookout for new firmware downloads. Microsoft is pushing out updates for both devices, but at the moment there's no information on what's contained in the files.

The official Surface update history pages (opens in new tab) have not yet been updated with change logs for either the Surface 3 or Surface Pro 3. It's possible that these files are meant to better prepare the tablets for the launch of Windows 10, which happens in just six days on July 29. We will update this post when we receive more information about these firmware downloads. In the meantime, feel free to post about anything new you might notice when you install these updates on your Surface tablet in the comments.

  • hope this fixes the connectivity issues with 10240 and the SP3.
  • I hope so as well. Hasn't been horrible, but annoying.
  • Single click on pen still does not open OneNote for me. Double click is having screen shot though.

Update: No error for me, but just had a random reboot on 10240. Ruh, roh

Update 2: Just got an Intel graphics update.
  • Single pen click works well for me.
  • Really... Hmm. Ty for the heads up.
  • Resync it to your Surface?
  • Just did that. It worked! Now I hope no more random reboots. Thanks for the reply guys!
  • No problem! Glad it helped! :D
  • Awesome, Windows 10 10240, error 0x80246013
  • Yup, me too
  • dude I'm having the same issue. Let me know if you find a workaround. I can't find much on the net.
  • me three :-\
  • I'm the 4th one. Great!!
  • exactly the same here
  • "• System Firmware Update - ‎7/‎23/‎2015 - Error 0x80246013"
    Wahoo!!! Again!
  • That happened to me with the May firmware update. Then it would LOOK like it installed and then a few days later it would prompt again. I am not certain why the Windows 10 Preview seems to not allow the Surface Pro 3 to update correctly.
  • Would say this is my biggest gripe with the preview on SP3.
  • Me Too - Have posted it on Windows 10 Update Feedback
  • Same, on a Surface 3.
  • same here.....ready for launch a few days from now? Makes me wonder. Updates should go smooth especially because we will get a lot of them the comming year.......... (SP3 i7/256)
  • Same here
  • Me too. I've Upvoted it in Windows Feedback. I don't understand why only a dozen or so people have upvoted it there. My Surface Pro seems to have been running particularly hot over the last couple of days.
  • Oooh. My very first firmware update as a new SP3 owner. Oh the excitement.
  • I'm getting the same error, running the latest Windows 10 release/RTM.
  • Windows 10 10240, error 0x80246013
  • Keeps giving me an error on my SP3 when trying to install the update. Running W10 final build 10240.
  • I wonder if a new RTM is going to get uploaded soon or something along those lines for this firmware to work.
  • Seems hotter. My SP3 (under 8.1) is a real oven these times. Hope it'll get fixed with W10...
  • Windows 10 10240, error 0x80246013
  • Shit, me too..
  • Me too.
  • me too
  • I did however find that Norwegian language pack is available. Probably more Languages. :D
  • It has been available for a few days now :)
  • Report error feedback app to get their attention, I logged the same error
  • And here I was starting to think that Windows 10 was actually ready for it's release in 6 days time... :(. They can't even get windows update (or they store for that matter) working. 0x80246013 like the others here.
  • SF2 PRO also got a firmware update. But it does not install.
  • What on earth is an SF2 PRO? What does the F stand for? ;)
  • Surface Pro 3 froze during download and update, forced power down on both, install finished and performed restart, acted funky, powered down, started ok without any issues. Started this morning and just stuck on "SURFACE" . Powered down and restarted....seems ok?
  • So judging from the comments, the firmware update is available only on machines with Windows 10 already installed?
  • Not sure Thieric up top referenced 8.1.
  • I saw that. But it's not clear what is meant by "these times," so I figured his SP3 has been getting hotter "lately" (which shouldn't apply for the update just released). I still cannot see the update, btw, on my S3 with 8.1.
  • Yeah, i was wondering too.
  • Had an update at 4 PM (France time) but not sure if it's this one. I have another waiting for restart right now.
  • Hm, that would be hours before this was reported here at WC, at Neowin and elsewhere. Do let us know if it is the firmware update or something else (you should notice during install, since they look different when installing - see the pic at Neowin: http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-has-released-firmware-updates-for-the-surface-pro-3-and-surface-3).
  • OK, I can confirm I have no firmware update for my SP3 on 8.1, sorry (those I was speaking about were only Office updates)
  • Thanks. That means the FW update isn't available for Surface [Pro] 3 unless Windows 10 is installed. There's at least no examples of people with updates on 8.1.
  • Must be only Win 10   Neither S3 or SP3 are seeing updates on W8.1
  • I don't either on my SP3 (8.1)
  • Its for 10, I just installed it on my SP3
  • Any update for the surface pro 2
  • Where are firmware and driver updates for the Original Surface Pro and Pro 2? It's been quite a while since the last update. Has MS abandoned driver support like their stupid OEM's do?
  • I hope this fixes the "slow boot when keyboard is folded back" issue.
  • Gosh I hope so. That sitting on the surface screen for minutes is gosh awful annoying.
  • Is that why this damn thing boots so slow sometimes???!!!
  • I never correlated the two, but I am going to keep my eye out now. Regardless, flipping frustrating.
  • Seems hotter, literally
  • FW updates for Surface have been plagued since the May 14th update on all OS's. Not just W10...
  • can't get it for the surface 3
  • Same here. There's nothing for the Surface 3 (on 8.1, at least).
  • on Pro 2 same 0x80246013
  • Downloading here, 83%
    Update: failed to install
  • I am double booting 8.1 and 10 on my S3. Update only shows on Windows 10. Downloading. :-)
  • sadly I and others are getting this error on Surface Pro 3 system firmware update 07/23/2015 error 0x80246013
  • Will the Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 get WIndows 10 at 29th since they're Microsoft devices? At least I thought so...
  • If you have using the Insider previews it will as Insider installs will be first to get their reservations filled.
  • This is why I prefer not to install firmware (or any update for that matter) with out release notes. Thankfully, people love testing here and will jump in before the rest of the herd.  Looks like I'll be waiting until there are some all-clears.  SP3 firmware update has been a little wonky in recent memory, no desire to muck things up unnecessarily.
  • All I get on my SP3 running Windows 10: • System Firmware Update - ‎7/‎23/‎2015 - Error 0x80246013
  • The same here
  • I did not receive it
  • I have a SP3, I get the same error on the firmware and also the new video driver crashed my OS the first time, then just failed the 2nd time. WTF Microsoft. I'm also on W10 RTM. They also don't have the firmware for stand alone download on their site yet either. What a mess.
  • What fine for me. I just clicked on install, i didnt get an error. UK
  • It also appears to be installing a windows 10 intel graphics driver.
  • Yeah it was also a video driver
  • Fails to install :-(
  • My Surface pro 3 just crashed after the fireware update, now it will not boot.  Gives me blue screen with frown face.  Citing "Video_scheduler_internal_error".  Damn it, I was just getting ready to take it out in the field with me.  So annoyed!
  • I have the exact same thing, couldn't even boot in to safe mode. Will likely have to reinstall.
  • Yeah, I downloaded the image recovery disk and reverted back to windows 8.1.  But, none of the built in repair features worked.  Lost a few things that I had on my desktop.  Will be making the One Drive documents folder my "Documents" folder from here on out. :/
  • My update went OK-ish.. FW stalled during the download to my S3. Then it downloaded video driver update, lost video at the end of the video driver update. Performed soft reset and booted up OK. Download of new FW finally downloaded completely and installed fine (no issues).
  • Is this firmware only available to those running Windows 10 Preview? Or have been redrawn by Microsoft since many users have encountered update errors? This firmware isn't available to my Surface 3 running Windows 8.1.
  • Yes, it seems like it. Many of us have pointed it out farther up in the comments. Only those with Win10 seem to have gotten the FW update.
  • Time for me to save up for a Surface 3. My laptop is just too big anymore.
  • System Firmware Update - ‎7/‎23/‎2015 - Error 0x80246013"
  • Another member of the System Firmware Update - ‎7/‎23/‎2015 - Error 0x80246013 club
  • Firmware update error same as everyone else, I saw it yesterday and then again today, I was hoping the issue would be fixed but apparently not.  Anyone out there have a MS contact to follow up on the firmware error?
  • Windows 10 10240, error 0x80246013 - It seems MS is blocking the update for S3 and SP3 already running W10. Not sure, but...
  • SP3 - Downloaded updates (Intel HD, firmware, security and one more) 100% ... Preparing to install 0% ... bluescreen / sad face crash, error BAD_POOL_HANDLER ...  BTW, will someone at Windows Central fix these comment forms so my friggin ENTER key actually goes to a new line and not to the beginning of the post??
  • SP2 and had the same thing. That's what I get for trying to upgrade Windows while at work I guess. And now I'm still getting "System Firmware Update - ‎7/‎23/‎2015 - Error 0x80246013" even after rebooting a few times.
  • My sound still does not work through my external monitor that is plugged into the dp port on the dock, however if I plug it directly into the surfaces dp port the sound works through the monitor, anyone else have this problem?
  • What IS the this firmware update? What's its number? I'm on my Surface 3, looking at the update history. but am not sure if I've gotten it or not.
