App updates

Appy Weather is a Windows Phone weather app that has a bit of a personal touch about it. The weather app has a minimalistic appearance and delivers a decent amount of forecast information to your Windows Phone.

Along with a simple interface and weather alerts, Appy Weather delivers the forecast information in a traditional sense but also in a practical sense. For example the app will often compare the forecast temperature with the prior day's weather. The app was recently updated to version 1.1 that includes a host of changes to the Live Tile settings and a few layout tweaks.

Magic Realms for Windows Phone gets a glitchy update

Yesterday we reviewed Magic Realms, a free to play collectible card game for Windows Phone. The game impressed me with its fast and simple battle system, social features and player-versus-player battles, cloud saves, and a truly vast array of beautiful cards to collect and battle. I did wish for a few improvements such as a faster energy recharge rate and smoother campaign difficulty, though.

It looks like our review was well-timed, because today Magic Realms received an update. This update shrinks the file-size down by a hefty margin; it was a 62 MB game but now takes up only 48 MB. And of course it fixes a few bugs. But the update introduces a few new problems, and does nothing to solve the issue some users have with being unable to launch the game. Head past the break for full details.

In Windows Phone 8.1, consumers are now able to check for app updates manually. There have been a number of third-party apps published to the store to achieve this in past versions of the operating system (prior to the 8.1 Preview), but now Redmond has added this functionality to the platform. It's a great trick in case you think you're missing an app update or you know a new version of your favorite app or game is due to that day.

Today, we're looking at a bunch of updates that have been pushed through for consumers to enjoy new features and more. We've got the likes of Camera360, Tapatalk and Awesome Lock, so pass the break for the details and download links.

With the latest release, SysApp Pusher now lets you add your favourite apps.

As the Windows Phone ecosystem grows, manufacturers will continually look for ways to expand and differentiate amongst themselves. One easy way for them to do so is with custom OEM Stores like the Nokia Collection or Samsung Zone.

The problem is with Windows Phone, you can’t force check for app updates, even for “system apps” like Samsung’s call blocker or Nokia’s Display + Touch. Sure you can wait the 24 hours for the Store tile to display an update, and that’s fine for most users, but let’s face it: if you’re reading this site, you want the latest and greatest now. This is especially true for Lumia owners since Nokia’s updates are known for enabling new, unannounced features making their occasional updates more like little birthday presents.

That's why SysApp Pusher is our must-have app this week.

The official Tapatalk app for Windows phone got updated yesterday to version 1.0.2.10. The app, which centralizes communications to various online communities, was released back in June for Windows Phone 7 and 8, and saw a fair share of connection issues to different sites. This latest patch resolves many of those issues, as well as some other minor bug fixes.

BBC News Mobile for Windows Phone has been bumped to version 4.1, which we believe to be a minor update to alert consumers that the app will be shutting down soon due to the entanglement with the BBC. Developer Lawrence Gripper has published a public beta for a new app to take BBC News Mobile's place, called Paper Boy. When launching BBC News Mobile after updating, a warning screen (pictured above) is displayed, linking to the Paper Boy beta.

Podcatcher updated along with Nokia Transfer My Data

We recently reviewed Podcatcher and whilst the app is a relative newcomer to the Windows Phone Store it has already caught our eye. One of the reasons for that was the developer's rapid fire updates, quickly adding features and fixes to the app.

Transfer My Data is a Nokia exclusive app to allow quick and painless migration of your data from your old phone to your shiny new Lumia device. Read on to find out more.

Last week we covered the Stacks for Instapaper app for Windows 8, it’s safe to say we think it’s the best way to use Instapaper on your Windows 8 tablet right now. As part of that review we also did a sneak peak of the coming update to the Windows Phone 8 app. Today it has arrived.

The update essentially brings a host of improvements to the mobile app to bring it visually in line with the Windows 8 app while taking on some new features provided by Windows Phone 8.
