First look at Poki 2.0 for Windows Phone 8.1

First look at the next big update for Poki. The refinement of an already beautiful app.

Ask me my favorite app on Windows Phone, and I might reply Poki. It's a third-party Pocket client for Windows Phone that I really like. Pocket is the service where you can save articles to read later and offline. They don't have an official app on Windows Phone yet, but that doesn't matter at all since we've got a healthy selection of apps for Pocket from the Windows Phone dev community. Poki just happens to be the one I use daily. It's also getting a big update in the near future. Here's a sneak preview of Poki 2.0 for Windows Phone.

Pocket (www.getpocket.com) is a popular service used by many to save online articles for later reading. The service works through web browser plugins or by manually saving article links into an online repository and organizing them by category. Later, users can pull up those articles when they have a free moment. Although Windows Phone does not have an official Pocket app, it does have some great clients including Pouch.

Today, Pouch 3.0 is live in the Store, and it is worth the download, especially if you are on Windows Phone 8.1. Let's take a look at what is new.

If you’re a fan of Weave, the popular news aggregator app for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, get ready to start checking for updates. Version 8.6.5 should be hitting the Store anywhere between the next few hours and tomorrow. That’s the Windows Phone 8 version and it has some swell additions, making it one of the more visually appealing news readers at your disposal.

Version 8.6.5 is not a major overhaul, but it does finally bring Pocket support (www.getpocket.com). With great apps like Poki or Pouch on Windows Phone, we find ourselves using the Pocket service more and more. With this update, when you hit the Share button, you’ll have Pocket and Instapaper as saving options. We’ve also heard there’s room for “one more” service, so look for that in another update.

Earlier this month we highlighted a brand new Pocket client in the Windows Phone Store called Poki. It’s the first app from Austrian developer @artistandsocial and it’s absolutely stunning. It’s probably our favorite Pocket app available for Windows Phone. We’re not alone in that sentiment. The app currently holds a 5 star rating in the U.S. and is globally averaging 200-500 downloads a day. Let’s just out the recent update for Poki.

Pocket is by far one of our favorite services on the web. We’ve covered a handful of third-party Pocket apps and apps that have Pocket integration in the past. It’s a great service that sadly doesn’t have an official app on Windows Phone or Windows 8 yet, but when apps like Squirrel come to the scene it’s hard to imagine what more an official app could really bring to the table. Squirrel is brand new to the Windows Phone Store and it’s a great client for Pocket. Let’s check it out.

Pocket is one of our favorite services out there. It allows you to save web pages or articles to your Pocket queue. After saving it an article to Pocket you can read it on any Pocket app you want across all your devices. Windows Phone doesn’t have an official Pocket app yet, but we do have stellar third-party options. Pouch is one of those options and it was just updated, let’s check out what’s new in this latest version.

Windows Reading List is an application that comes preinstalled with all Windows 8.1 machines; it allows users to browse the web and easy save content for later viewing. The software is very similar to other services such as Pocket and Instapaper, but falls short when paired amongst comparable services (no mobile applications, less features, etc.). If you are a fan of Windows Reading list though, you will be excited to hear that the app has received a new feature in its recent update.

One area that Windows Phone is equal to in regards to Android and iOS is the number of high quality Twitter applications. On all platforms there are a handful of excellent Twitter clients, both official and third-party for nearly anyone. Whether you’re a casual user just following the tweets of celebrities or a social media powerhouse needing advanced features, you’ll find a Twitter app for you. Peregrine is one of those Twitter apps on Windows Phone that is really, really good. The latest update to Peregrine makes it even better.

In today’s world, we gather our news from a multitude of sources.
