Intel announced that it will launch a 28-core CPU sometime later this year, and AMD is launching its own salvo with the second-generation Threadripper, which will have an astounding 32 cores.
The first-gen Threadripper had 16 cores — featuring two eight-core dies — and Threadripper 2 will have four of these dies to make up 32 cores and 64 threads.
We're looking at the same 12nm manufacturing process, and it looks like Threadripper 2 uses the same Zeppelin silicon as the first-gen version with performance tweaks and faster clocks.
Threadripper 2 will have a maximum TDP of 250W, and will be pin-compatible with the first-generation variant, meaning you'll be able to slot in Threadripper 2 in an existing X399 motherboard.
You will have to flash the BIOS for the board to recognize the new CPU, but AMD's partners will roll out firmware updates to the boards in time for the launch.
As for the launch itself, AMD says Threadripper 2 will be available in Q3 2018. That should give the brand an edge over Intel, which is expected to launch its 28-core CPU sometime in Q4.
That's all we have on Threadripper 2 for now, but we should know more in the coming months. In the meantime, let me know what you think of the upcoming CPU in the comments below.
