Bill Gates does best ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video yet

Bill Gates does it best. Two days ago we showed you Satya Nadella taking part in the ALC Ice Bucket Challenge that's been going around. The purpose of this social media campaign is to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a serious neurodegenerative disease. Mark Zuckerburg of Facebook recently challenged Bill Gates. As you'll see in the video below, Bill Gates took the challenge like a champ.

Do your thing Bill. Anyone think Elon Musk, Ryan Seacrest, and Chris Anderson will rise up to Bill's challenge?

And you can do your thing by donating to help the ALS Association.

Thanks for the tip everyone!

  • Go Billy!
  • This is why he owns Microsoft, he's genius
  • Geek rules
  • Nicely done, Bill Gates! Creative, humorous, and inspiring all while raising awareness and contributions for a good cause. http://msft.it/msftemp
Microsoft Empowering Us All site features videos of Steve Gleason, a former pro football player with ALS, using Microsoft Surface and eye tracking technology to help him communicate.
  • He probably owns less of Microsoft now than even Ballmer does.
  • Scratch the "probably": http://www.wpcentral.com/bill-gates-no-longer-microsofts-largest-shareho...
  • Pffft, I want to see the Carolina Reaper challenge with these guys.
  • Now imagine if he was back at the helm at Microsoft.
  • he should have jumped over a chair afterwards.
  • Commenters on the Verge are saying that he is disguising his iPad as a surface. "It’s so obvious, he never tried to hide the fact he uses an iPad, even when he was a secret santa to someone on reddit he sent someone an ipad rather than a surface lol" It looks like a Surface to me
  • Yeah that makes sense... Since he would never be able to afford BOTH an iPad and a Surface Pro 3.
  • He surly isn't hahah
  • ^ ha! this is comedy
  • There's the logo on the right, the keyboard, the kickstand, the shifted camera and the logo on the back. I think we can say for a fact that he used a Surface 3. If you think that's an iPad, you've never seen either an iPad or a Surface 3
  • http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/15/6006721/bill-gates-builds-ice-bucket-c... I didnt say it
  • Its The Verge. What do you expect
  • The only thing that's throwing me is the holster for the pen.   My SP3/cover has no capability whatsoever to hold the pen.   The dock has a little magnetic spot for it, but I need one of these fancy MS Research type covers with pen holster!
  • The type cover for SP3 comes with the holster for the pen. Its actually not attached when you first open the cover. It's a little flap of fabric thats also in the box. You have to peel the adhesive off the back and stick it to the cover yourself. It's so you can put the pen hoster wherever you want.
  • Every smart businessman acknowledges the competition.
  • I think that may be a sarcastic joke.
    Sarcasm isn't big in America.
  • I'm going to assume they were joking. I'd like to think there aren't people stupid enough to put an app-centric device like the iPad in the same league as a laptop replacement device like the Surface Pro 3. Also, pretty sure the Secret Santa gift was something educational and a donation to a cause for a lady on Reddit. Whatever, it's the Verge.
  • Well said!
  • The Surface pro 3 is good but I'm not wasting that much more, same goes for an iPad.
  • Best waste of money I have ever owned ^__^
  • Jesus looks cold
  • A comma would help you Posted via Windows Phone Central App
  • Thank you. I got really confused by that! XD
  • Awwwwwwe, now it makes since. I really was confused at first, I didn't know it was a thing to call Bill Gates Jesus now.
  • Let's eat grandma. Let's eat, grandma.
  • the first sentence = eat grandma the second = told grandma to eat something

  • You don't say?! Now, did we really need that explanation?
  • Muhammad looks sweaty
  • You clearly don't understand how this works.
  • lol
  • http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8Gv0H-vPoDc
  • This was awesome :)
  • He is the best.
  • This is great. First thing I've had to laugh about all day. And while he's at it he should throw the WP team, WP marketing team, Xbox Music team, and whoever negotiates WP exclusive sales with carriers team, in that lake!!!!
  • It looks like a nice lake, let's not polute it with garbage
  • LMAO!
  • You made my night, again right after this video xD
  • Your night! Come on that's just not the way ^_^
  • I see what you did there.....lol
  • Especially the Xbox music crApp team.
  • Why does Gates look SOOOO old?
  • Because he is almost 59 year old.
  • I know that. But he looks like he is 80 years old.
  • Maybe he sold some of his youth for his wealth lol.
  • He's rich and was in charge of a multi-billion dollar company. Stress.
  • Hmm...
  • Stress?
  • Often ppl have stress. Look at Steve jobs
  • Poor Steve, glad he's gone, he only helped his company grow from users ignorance and marketing, its nice that Microsoft is still classy. Steve deserved to go.
  • That's a little harsh.
  • Comic Sans MS? People still use that?!
  • Yes. It's a cute font.
  • Yes, love it.
  • At least its a Microsoft font. But agreed - really? Comic sans? Come on Bill, you're classier than that!
  • Bill Gates is the best human being since Jesus. And Jesus wasn't even human.
  • That's not entirely true, he lived in a human body, had human emotions, felt human joy, happiness, etc, or so I read. Really, he was both, a human with a divine soul. A bit like us without the divine part:)
  • I wonder what his favorite food was...
  • fool's minds like these guys
  • Loaves of bread and fish, apparently.
  • Bread
  • He was just a hustler
  • Tim Cook has people dropping the water on him. Satya Nadella has people dropping the water on him. Larry Page has people dropping the water on him.   Bill Gates "builds" a machine and has it dropping the water on him. And that's why Microsoft was never the same since Bill Gates left the command.
  • Hmm... "Think different" - Apple slogan. :/
  • Bill Gates "builds" a machine and has it dropping the water on him. And that's why Microsoft was never the same since Bill Gates left the command
Err, I guess you meant he had someone planning it out for him, make a sketch where could doodle in a stick man, build the scaffold for him so he can do some fake welding and let him do the bucket drop alone without anyone else in the picture? Well, if Microsoft needs a dictator at the helm to be successful then by all means get Bill back.
  • Pretty sure he realizes that Bill Gates didn't actually build it, hence the quotes
  • Exactly.
  • If Bill Gates could be considered a Dictator, what do you think Steve Jobs was? Honest question.
  • 1 - I wrote "builds" with quotation marks for a reason. 2 - Microsoft needs someone with vision and a "we need to create stuff to solve problems". Someone who, as he said, wants to "do it better than it has been done". Not a clueless-lunatic like Ballmer...nor even a layed-back "let's just put our stuff everywhere and consern about innovation later" like Nadella. If that someone needs to be a Dictator, fine. Bring on the dictator. Corporations aren't supposed to be democracies where every employee gets to vote on the decisions anyway, so...
  • I miss the old Microsoft that just bought out the competition when they got too popular.
  • Anti-monopoly laws are a real *****...
  • Not really. Ever read about a company named Oracle?
  • Yeah, he should probably quit goofing off trying to cure malaria and polio and crap like some sort of rich jerk and concentrate on making water dumping contraptions to please a bunch of self-absorbed first-worlders on the internet.
  • Oh puh-leeeease *eye roll*
  • expect elon musk to build a rocket to drop the water on him
  • Good for u Mr. Gates and Microsoft!!!
  • I love the SP3 plug
  • As Cold as it Gates   good JOB Bill
  • I get it! Nice wordplay
  • Thanks.. happy somebody got it ;-)
  • After weeks of this going on, I actually learned something from this video. Lou Gehrig's disease = ALS.
  • Why he didn't use his Surface 3 for design instead of paper? He could use this to promote the Surface! come on!
  • :p Posted via Windows Phone Central App
  • i wouldn't expect anything less from Mr. Bill Gate :)
  • Well done Mr. Gates!
  • That's really cool, building this construction for letting the ice water fall on you. For me it's too the best video made for the campaign.
  • Tim cook did it Posted via Windows Phone Central App
  • Get back to iMore Posted via Windows Phone Central App
  • Oh I despise apple now. Have an android phone, oneplus one. I don't think I could ever fully switch to windows phone but I love windows 8.1 on my dell venue 11 pro. Posted via Windows Phone Central App
  • And then tried to patent cold water, the bucket and gravity.
  • LOL ^
  • XD
  • LMAO! Here, Sir. You deserve this: +3310
  • Haha, more of a laugh..
  • *Snort* Good one! :D
  • And did it right for the first time with his "magical" iBucket :P
  • Bill Gates is the MAN.
  • Yes he is.
  • Bill is awesome!
  • elon musk? you can count on it
  • What is this ? Why CEOs do this ? Is that a custom in America ? If so, what story behind this custom ?
  • It is simply a silly way to raise awareness and (hopefully) money for a good cause using social media. By getting CEOs of major corporations and other famous figures they can reach the masses.
  • Hmmm, as far as raising awareness, couldn't they reach a much larger demographic by targeting attractive women for this challenge? Cheerleaders, Playmates, Hooters girls.... just sayin'.
  • Apparently they are trying to reach people worth money... Edit: With money (swipe typing typo)
  • Umm. Wow...yeah. Just.. I have nothing to say to you
  • Swipe type fail
  • Oh i see, so this challenge is to charity, good things to do with fun
  • He could have at least teased us with some unannounced epic waterproof flaghip WP device at the end of the video. C'mon MS give us something!
  • the best one so far
  • He's called Bill Gates because he owns a lot of gates
  • That was friggin' awesome!!! Its that over the top shenanigan type humor that i love.
  • Awesome!
  • I want Dan Rubino to take the challenge.
  • Lol sure things ?
  • Take the challenge then challenge him!
  • Someone Challenge Zuzka Light, please.
  • I don't see any ice...
  • Bill ......ouch that was cold burhhh
  • Good thing he wasn't an artist for a living...
  • Bill is really awesome.
  • Awesome!!
  • It doesn't surprise me that Bill Gates built a machine to dump the water. He has Asperger's, after all. (I have it, too.)
  • How about his best friend Warren Buffett. Do it Warren!!
  • bill gates probably coolest man on earth
  • Saint Now
  • That was awesome
  • Like a BOSS
  • :)
  • Way to go Bill.....You certainly have class. Posted via Windows Phone Central App
  • I appreciate Mr Gates', and everyone's, efforts to raise awareness/money to fight this terrible illness - my mother passed away 19 years ago (4/26/1995) from ALS. :-( Posted via the Windows Phone Central App for Android
  • Good job
  • Cool. Well done Bill
  • Well done, Bill. //Microsoft IceBucket 2014//
  • Useless...
  • So what've you done of late that's been so useful?
  • Sp3 looks cool. Give me one bill
  • Great, absolutely great. I hope someone invites Barack Obama, Steve Wozniak and Joe before Belfiore
  • Edit: Joe Belfiore
  • Obama apparently refused and chose to donate the $100 instead.
  • Biznes to biznes jak to pieprza bogate dziady
  • Holy shift!
  • The comments on YouTube are ridiculous as always people don't get the challenge so they are slamming it I saw Adam Jones of the Orioles challenge his manager so I already got the point of it but I guess it's too complicated for some people to get but I hope people keep challenging other big names to do it it's fun to watch and it's for a great cause
  • As usual nailed it ........
