Windows Phone Central compares and contrasts today's top smartphone cameras

2013 so far can be described as the year of the camera phone. Between Nokia’s engineering and the likes of its competitors playing catch up, consumers have plenty of choice when it comes to smartphones with excellent cameras.

Following up our recent Lumia shoot out, we decided to take three of today's high end devices out for a showdown, specifically the brand new iPhone 5S, Lumia 925 (review) and Lumia 1020 (review). All three can be considered top contenders on paper, but we'll see who is the best when we dig deeper into the pixels.

Care to see our results? You may be surprised.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 925 Review

The Nokia Lumia 925 is a fantastic Windows Phone that is now available at AT&T. We've shared our first impressions and unboxing of the Lumia 925 late last week and now we take a little closer look at the latest AT&T and Nokia offering.

The AT&T Nokia Lumia 925 is almost identical to the unlocked version and the T-Mobile variant that we've covered previously. However, AT&T is only offering the Lumia 925 in black and it works with AT&T's LTE network.  The Lumia 925 has made a very good first impression and the more we use it, the more the Lumia 925 grows on us.

Is it strong enough to push us away from the Lumia 1020? What about the Lumia 920? Maybe.... just maybe.

Telstra cancels Nokia Lumia 1020 pre-orders for Australia; sends free Lumia 520s out as peace offerings

73

Today was supposed to be a joyous day for Telstra customers, a day that they could pre-order the Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows phone. Sadly, however, Telstra has run into a software issue on their Lumia 1020s that is bad enough to postpone the release indefinitely, forcing Telstra to cancel all pre-orders for the Nokia flagship phone. Thankfully, the news isn't all bad. As a result of the cancelations, Telstra has generously shipped out free Nokia Lumia 520 smartphones to those who pre-ordered the Lumia 1020.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 925 - Unboxing and first impressions

154

Yesterday, AT&T and Nokia released the slim and mostly-metal Lumia 925, bringing along with it one of the nation’s largest LTE networks at a $99 price point ($429 off contract). Today, we go hands on with the latest Nokia offering and come away impressed.

Featuring 16GB of internal storage (12GB available), a 4.5-inch AMOLED display with ClearBlack and an 8.7MP PureView camera with that extra lens-element for improved sharpness, there’s a lot to like about the Lumia 925. The phone is cool-to-the-touch due to the aluminum frame and it comes in elegant black (as opposed to T-Mobile’s brighter white offering). The OS is build 1328 (GDR2) and like other AT&T GDR2 devices, unfortunately lacks Data Sense.

Chinese OEM Xiaomi "borrowing" from both Microsoft and Nokia designs

183

Xiaomi is a Chinese smartphone brand who recently came to international attention by the successfully hiring of Hugo Barra, a top executive from Android. From there, the company went forth with a series of new product announcements to continue the good media vibe. The first item is MI3, the latest of the company's smartphone line. The device is powered by a Tegra 4 processor, and marketed as "the fastest phone out there". Performance put aside, the official rendering of MI3 looks disturbingly familiar...

Missed Microsoft's conference call on the acquisition of Nokia? Get the summary right here

118

Earlier today Microsoft held a conference call for investors, analysts and the press to discuss its acquisition of Nokia's devices business. The audio only call followed a very tight structure around slides that had earlier been revealed to show some of the specifics of the deal.

If you missed that call don't panic as there wasn't a whole lot of new information, and you'll pick up everything important in the slides which you should be able to download at this link Edit: looks like that link has been pulled by Microsoft so here's a backup on Skydrive (app users remember to swipe right and tap the "View Links" button). Said presentation was then followed by a Q&A which we've done our best to capture in writing which you'll find after the break.

Nokia stock up over 35% and rising following the announcement of a purchase by Microsoft

120

The dust is still settling on the huge news that Microsoft has begun proceedings to purchase Nokia's devices and services business for €5.44 billion. Nokia's "Bandit" phablet to be dubbed the Lumia 1520?

84

Smartphone insiders @evleaks tweeted a simple, but straight-forward message about the Nokia 6-inch Windows Phone 8 device codenamed "Bandit," denoting that it will officially be called the Nokia Lumia 1520. @evleaks has a longtime track record of being correct with the information they release, so we think the chances are pretty good that we'll be hearing the name Lumia 1520 soon.

Nokia "Bandit" 6-inch phablet being tested by AT&T

214

The Verge is reporting that sources have told them that Nokia will be releasing a phone with a 6-inch screen by the end of the year. The device, which is currently being tested by AT&T under the moniker "Bandit," will be the first Windows Phone-powered phablet, a device that bridges the gap between a phone and a tablet. Back in July, we saw a leaked photo of a 6-inch digitizer for such a device, so this isn't completely shocking, but some more details have been revealed.

Nokia Lumia 625 – Unboxing and first impression; video and photos

50

Another month and another Lumia device is ready to launch from our favorite Finnish Windows Phone manufacturer. This time around it is the Lumia 625, an expansion of the Lumia 6xx series including its smaller cousin the 4-inch Lumia 620.

The Lumia 625 is Nokia’s attempt to continue to hammer the entry level market for smartphones by giving users a choice in design and features. While not as feature packed as the 8xx or higher Lumia series, the 620 and 625 offer some premium features for a low cost.

The big selling point of the Lumia 625? Its massive 4.7-inch 800x480 IPS display, which contrasts dramatically with the 3.8-inch Lumia 620’s screen. In the same series you have Nokia’s largest and smallest display offerings, which is quite interesting.

Head past the break to see our unboxing video, first impressions and some high quality photos of this compelling Windows Phone.
