'Fragments' for HoloLens brings an interactive crime drama to your living room

Developers who have gotten their hands on Microsoft HoloLens have come up with no shortage of novel ways to leverage its mixed reality power, and a HoloLens game called Fragments is no different. Presented as an interactive crime drama, Fragments has players solving a mystery while interacting with a whole cast of characters layered over their surroundings.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Fragments is how its elements are laid out against your surroundings. Even the game's characters can recognize the furniture around you to, for example, sit down on a couch or a chair. Just from what we've seen from developers thus far, HoloLens looks like it's going to offer up plenty of incredible interactive experiences once it makes its way to the public.

Be sure to give the video above a watch for a small look at what it takes to bring an interactive experience to HoloLens. And be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!

  • Wow and wow and another wow
  • And super WOW
  • What do these WOWs refer to, DOGE or Windows Vista?
  • There are no words for how cool this is. Simply amazing.
  • We should be able to play this kind of interactive games with Hololens. 'Life is Strange' type of games must enter AR form.
  • Hehe. I am recalling the conference "calls" scenes from the recent Resident Evil (and other sci-fi) movies.  It's an obvious and clever thing to include in gaming.  So many applications for this stuff. Neato.
  • My first thought is, that's creepy. Second thought, that's cool!
  • Whoooaaaa!!!
  • MS needs to bundle HoloLens with Scorpio.
  • Indeef, here is my money..take it...take it now!
  • Sounds like Kinect all over again tbh. Not to imply that Kinect or HoloLens are bad of course, but it shouldn't be assumed that gamepad gamers are also into motion controls or AR.
  • This is by far the best game I've played so far on the Hololens! It took me 8 hours to get past all 10 levels, but this game is so cool! It reminds me of a Minority Report esque game -- or really any detective movie of the future. I really hope they come out with new levels in the future. I really want to keep playing!
  • It is matter of time I ditch my GF for a hololense :)
  • This really is a precursor to the Holodeck, isn't it? It's incredible stuff, can't wait to see what kind of games and experiences are available in five years time when this stuff will properly enter the mainstream in affordability and availability.
  • This is awesome.
  • Impressive!
  • I'm not a gamer, but HoloLens could make me one.
  • Pointless if it's $3000.  Out of the hands of all consumers.
  • .... Or you could just wait for the consumer version to be released. Posted with the Nexus 6, Nexus 5, or Surface Pro 3
  • Expensive, yes, but hardly out of the hands if ALL consumers; if I was really hooked, 3.000 $ wouldn't topple my finances, and I'm just a regular mid-income Joe...
  • wow .... i will wait for the consumer edition !
  • As intended, mind you. Obviously by the time the consumer version comes out the parts will be cheaper, and MS will also likely take less of a profit from each unit.
  • This is a DEV KIT erasure25.  The dev kit for the ps3 before launch was more than the HoloLens dev kit.  Dev kits always cost more.  This isn't even the final hardware, just something to let people start building apps for the release version and anything else running windows holographic.
  • Wow. This is incredible
  • Holy freaking ****. MS needs to make HoloLens 2 ASAP!
  • This is impressive!
  • ❤ MS
  • Looking good! Would be nice to see some raw game play though, see how good the actual game is. This video mostly just showed us cutscenes.
  • Those AREN'T cut scenes!  In fact, there really are NO cut scenes in this game.  You interact in every one of the scenes portrayed in the video.
  • Oh, and the game looks better than the video above.  Hololens doesn't do a good job of recording what you are seeing.
  • Really? That's pretty awesome.
  • ONE SPOILER IN THIS COMMENT:  Fragments has been out since before I received my 3rd wave dev ket.  Nothing in the world of gaming can prepare you for a character to be casually sitting on your couch in your living room - or when the bad guy is standing in your house commenting about where you live.  I could see the latter giving those with more impressionable minds nightmares for a while.
  • If I had one, I would no question buy this game (as long as it's reasonable priced) but, at over $3000 (after tax, shipping etc) for the hololens it does not look like I will be playing this any time soon. It's just the fact that that there is a very limited content for it, although this game looks great,  Anything over $500 for a gaming device is just too much. I know this device has a lot of other uses but, in my world, it would only be a entertainment device and $3K is just way too much.
  • This is my favorite game for the HoloLens
  • Excessive use of #HoloLens will cause your brain to "seeing" holograms when you're unplugged, in the real life too, because brain may "think" these visions are a normal part of your life. We're at the doorsteps for new mass psychosis. Just my 2¢.
