Gears of War: Redux is the fan-built overhaul that I always wanted from Microsoft — Horde Mode, new maps, and Xbox 360-style achievements included
A fan-made overhaul of the original PC release adds modern platform support and a wealth of new features.
Gears of War, as I'm sure you know, needs no introduction, as it's one of Xbox's flagship franchises and one that I immediately associate with the brand. Having completed the original Gears of War for the first time in years on Insane difficulty with my friend last year, it left me wanting more.
Now, a year later, it seems the community has taken up the mantle with Gears of War: Redux, a full community-built overhaul of the original PC version of Gears of War.
Featuring new maps, custom maps, Horde Mode, and a long list of additional features, this ambitious project aims to breathe new life into a classic that I believe desperately needed it. Let's take a look at everything included in this impressive overhaul.
The overhaul aims to improve AI, add new features, modernize the game's feel, and improve accessibility. It also adds support for 4K resolutions, ultrawide displays, and improved FOV handling, while making the game more compatible with modern hardware and addressing issues that have plagued the title for over two decades.
Personally, what gets me most excited is the inclusion of Horde Mode, complete with 50-wave progression, as well as support for Gears of War 2 maps, custom community maps, split-screen co-op, and even Xbox 360-style achievements. For a game that first launched on PC back in 2007, it's an impressive list of additions that I thought were worth bringing attention to.
If you're like me and love Gears of War, it's definitely worth checking out. The project is set to release on June 17, 2026, and if you want more details, you can join the community discord by clicking here. After what I felt was a pretty disappointing remaster with Gears of War: Reloaded, I'm eager to give this a try when it launches, especially with Gears of War: E-Day on the horizon.
I'd love to hear what you think of Gears of War: Redux. Is this something you'll be checking out when it releases? Let me know in the comments, and as always, make sure you take part in our poll!
