Gears of War 4 Windows 10 pre-loading begins, but you should update to build 14393.222 first

Windows 10 PC gamers who have pre-ordered Gears of War 4 from the Windows Store can now start pre-loading the sci-fi shooter on their hard drives ahead of the game's official launch. However, those gamers should update their Windows 10 version to the current 14393.222 cumulative build first.

Microsoft began rolling out the new build late on Thursday. In a post on the official Gears of War forums, developer The Coalition stated:

All Windows 10 players are strongly encouraged to download the new Windows update (September 29, 2016 – KB3194496) immediately before pre-downloading Gears of War 4. This update fixes an issue which could cause your game download to restart.

Pre-loading for the Windows 10 version of Gears of War will require 80GB of free storage space. The Ultimate Edition of the game will unlock on October 7, and the regular edition will do the same on October 11. Buying the digital version of the game on Windows 10 will also let users get the Xbox One version for free, via Xbox Play Anywhere.

  • Hmm do I buy Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War Ultimate or just wait for Gears 4 :-/
  • If I wait for Gears 4 I can just keep myself busy with the original Trilogy on BC :-p
  • GOW:UE has some extra stages in there that you might like, and you can earn more achievements.
  • I personally need to buy GOW:UE I just upgraded my system too, so I may do that over the weekend. I am not going to touch GOW4 as tempting as it may be right now. I need to finish the trilogy first since MS has all the bugs worked out of the PC version it is the time to enjoy it ^^
  • Not touching another Windows store game for a long time after the performance issues of Quantum Break and Forza.
  • What is the specs of your system?
  • Too bad. Forza works perfectly on Windows 10 for me
  • You may be interested to know that Forza's devs asked help from the community to pinpoint what's leading to the stuttering reports:
  • What's been wrong with Forza Horizon 3? The only thing I don't like is I can't seem to make it work with my steam link. Otherwise, it's an awesome experience on my pc.
  • too bad you cant install the update lol
  • Exactly!
  • I know what you mean. First time I've had this problem. Update downloads, reboot, gets to end of install and then says failed and reverts the changes. Found a post by Microsoft employee in the Windows fourms on and he said that they have identified the issue and have people working on it, but there is no work around. We just have to wait for the fix from MS.
  • Seriously WC?! Good PSA, but no mention of update issues here or in the .222 update article. It is far from a minor problem.
  • It's some kinda f.ucking joke that I have to update..Congrats windows
  • Had to do the same thing in Windows 7, Vista, XP.. Get over it child
  • Sucks we have to install this to get Gears but it'll break recore
