How to fix Mail, Calendar, and People apps in Windows 10 Preview Build 10041

We're playing around with the latest Windows 10 Preview Build 10041 and immediately noticed that Mail, Calendar, and People apps are broken. According to Microsoft, this is due to a licensing issue with the Store Beta. Fortunately, there is a quick fix. We'll show you how to do it in just a few steps.

First, you need to open Powershell as administrator. You can do this by tapping on Cortana and typing powershell. Tap and hold, or right-click on Powershell to display the option to run the app as administrator.

The next step is to enter this command in Powershell. This code is provided in Microsoft's blog post. You will get an error if you enter the code while Powershell is NOT in administrator mode:

  • Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like "*windowscommunicationsapps*"} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online

You can then close Powershell and re-install Mail, People and Calendar from the Store with the green tile. This will not work with the Store (Beta) using a grey tile.

Mail, People and Calendar apps started working again after following these steps and restarting the computer. We'll spend more time with the newly released Windows 10 Preview Build 10041 and share anything else that might be interesting. In the meantime, you can check out our gallery of screenshots from the new build.

This build brings a collection of new functionality and bug fixes. Some of the noticeable new features include transparent Start screen, improvements to Virtual Desktop, network fly-out from the taskbar, new text input canvas, and more. Keep in mind that this is still a Preview. The UI is coming together slowly, but there's still a lot of work to do.

Have you been playing with the latest Windows 10 Preview build? Do you have a favorite new feature? Sound off in the comments!

  • Forgive me, haven't played much with W10. Text input canvas?
  • From the Insider Hub app:
New Text Input Canvas: We’ve introduced an updated experience for handwriting panel recognition optimized for short text entry. Auto displayed on tap in edit control with pen, positioned near the edit control, provides recognition candidates, suggestions and next word predictions.
  • Stuck at 52%... Still downloading lol... There must be alot of people updating...
  • there is error displaying 0x80200013 what should i do??
  • Anyone know how to fix the Windows Store Beta update? It wont update...
  • I think they talked about this in the known issues post?
  • Any solution? I wouldn't mind downloading apps via the original store app, but I can get the office preview apps in the beta store app :/
  • back during the update to build 9926 I faced a similar issue with the xbox app, it got resolved by itself after like 3 days of trying. I think it may be on their end and nothing to do with the build. Probably a Store Beta backend glitch or bug
  • Yeh im not entirely sure. Im still facing the issue but im looking into it.
  • I had this error previously. You need to set your region to us-English, in order for the beta store to work. I don't remember the exact procedure, but you can search for "windows 10 store beta region problem" and probably find a description
  • In "All apps" list you can see 2 icons diferent icons for the store: one for the beta (grey) and a green one (for the not-beta). Try installing the app with the latter. Then restart the pc. Let me know if you fix it.:)
  • When will it get fixed naturally?
  • Next build, naturally.
  • Naturally, naturally.
  • There is also a workaround for people having issues installing the Office Preview apps; first item in the Insider app.
  • Its downloading as we speak. Cool beans
  • Much easier way to run an app as administrator if you have a physical keyboard: type until it's the first item in the search results, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
  • Or just start typing Powershell and then right click it in the search area and select run as administrator.
  • That's exactly what the article already says. I was suggesting a faster and handy-to-know keyboard shortcut.
  • True enough :)
  • Thanks that is faster
  • I am able to control my army of animatronic minions quite well now......ATTACK!!!
  • Hey! Downloaded, installed all cool except this....did you guys had any trouble with the Realtek Semiconductor Corp. driver Update? I'm stuck at "Preparing to install updates 0%" and i don't have audio -.-
  • I had this problem on my dell venue. Go to the manufacture site and download the 8.1 version.
  • Oh crap, it's installing 9926 for some crazy reason. Just realized that. What the!?
  • You have to be in the fast ring
  • Ah, i had rolled back my Surface 3 to 8.1.  Ok, will just double update I guess.  Thanks for the tip. all good on my work pc earlier
  • I'm still waiting for a Dolby home theater software update to match the new driver
  • I found a forum on this awhile ago. Had to fix those apps in the previous build. I think once you do this you'll be fine for future builds.
  • Taking a long time to install ! I am stuck at 21 % right now!
  • This build brings more bugs than it does fixes. Had issues with the start menu loading, Cortana fails to work properly, display driver issues etc but hopefully these won't pose too much of an issue
  • Yeah have to say feeling a bit underwhelmed. I know it's a beta (alpha) program, but realy there's hardly any changes and a fair few new bugs. I don't think transparent start menu, network flyout & the other handful of UI tweaks since 9926 justifies two months work. If this is the rate they are going at then RTM in June is going to miss by miles.
  • You're just looking at the UI. There's the whole "behind the scenes" being worked on too. Terry M wouldn't have said Summer if he didn't think they could make it. They don't release the very latest build to the public....for example, they have a build with Hello working on it.
  • Ive already caught many, many more tweaks in this build. Flat icons are much more wide spread now, even in the control panel, New UI on log in screen, some examples. and theres a hundred other tweaks we just aren't noticing cause its behind the scenes. Things that are there, the foundation of what the next build will be based on for example...
  • The icons are horrible. Wish you could customize the ones in "This Pc" and on the left side navigation panel in Windows Explorer. I left feedback but I don't think they'll see it
  • Calculator also have bugs, it will open in super full screen to occupy your whole display including external monitor cannot be close only way is to shutdown, still finding solution.
  • With lots of people testing Windows 10, I hope it's a major success unlike Windows 8 and 8.1
  • Windows 8.1 on a tablet is wonderful.
  • It works as a charm on my DELL Venue 8 Pro, amazing OS! IDK what could have been better.
  • yeh i loved it on the tablet and phone love charms on tablet lol.
  • The only problem with Windows 8 and 8.1 was the media.
  • And the horrible update problems I've experienced first hand.
  • I have no audio now... On an Asus notebook
  • Me to. The Realtek drivers is having issues to install.
  • install realtek from official site with win8 compatibility
  • Not working. The install is failing
  • Try troubleshooting windows update and then installing from the realtek website again
  • I had same issue I just format and installed latest build from USB. Everything works fine now.
  • Had the same problem with my Samsung laptop.. No way to fix it.. So I got back to 9926 from the recovery, took me 5 mins and btw it works 10000 times better with this build :)
  • Don't know if you found a solution, but search for "How to fix: Realtek Audio Driver Wont Install - Error Code 0x000005b4 displayed, or driver update process times out" that is what I did and it really worked. Now I have sound and I'm very happy with this Win10 Build!
  • Playing with It for a while. Can't go full screen with the modern apps, but overall Experience os smoother. I'm on a Celeron D Pc
  • The store wont display correctly on my laptop no matter what I do. I can't search for apps or access settings. The beta store wont even open. This is waaaayyy buggier than the last build for me.
  • Slow ring?
  • Got an error ... I did as admin.
  • Would a simple long press and uninstall of each of the 3 apps accomplish the same thing as the Powershell command...?
  • I keep getting blue screen of death everytime I try to access the mail client. I tried the command and then tried the link.... blue screen... Ive even got blue screen a few times after login. May roll back.
  • This build is for people who like give feedback, don't mind there pc crashing and know how to fix if it does. Also Microsoft have warned that those on Fast Build could be faced with a complete reinstall of their pc if it goes tits up. So finally, be warned and don't come crying if any of the above happens, don't blame Microsoft for releasing a buggy OS, that's why they did so we could find the bugs. :)
  • This!
  • Any fix yet to the network card property error. Can't get into the cards settings to check or uncheck loaded protocols and services.
  • Best to use the insider app and wait for them to find a workaround, or google and see if someone has posted else where about the problem.
  • Just found this on the windows 10 forum: Giridhar J replied, Microsoft Support Engineer Thank you for your interest in Windows 10 Technical preview. We are aware of this issue and Microsoft is currently investigating a fix. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.
  • Go to device manager and uninstall you network adaptor. After this, scan for hardware changes and re-install allow the network adaptor.  This fixed my network properties issue.
  • The only way i have been able to fix the network card issue was to reboot.
  • Nah, that didn't help. Make sure you guys post this in the feedback app. There are just a dozen or so votes for this error. Search in Networks / Network and Internet for - An unexpected error occurred
  • Confirmed everytime i try to load the store mail client I get a blue screen
  • Windows 10 bugs confirmed ;)
  • I love Powershell
  • Only quasi-related: Went to upgrade to 10041 from 9926. Now I'm in a pickle: Went to settings, updates, it found the new version. Successfully downloaded, reboot, started to download, got to 3%, never progressed. I cycled power, hoping it'd pick up where it left off, but instead, it reverted back to 9926. 9926 is working fine, but now when I go to settings and updates, it says I'm all up to date even though I'm running 9926. Had to leave, so have not been able to try rebooting again. It's acting like now that 10041 failed once, it's no longer available to me anymore. Anybody know how I can get it to upgrade now? Thanks! Posted via the Windows Phone Central App for Android
  • Bad, should have sat there and waited it out. Mine stuck at 3% for probably 30(?) min. Just wait it out, it'll take a while, especially if you have a 'regular' hard drive and not an SSD, or older hardware. Probably need to reboot to refresh everything.
  • Hopefully you have tried again because I thought I was going to get a failed install when it stayed at 3% for so long.
  • My install did the same thing. Stalled at 3 percent for a good while. I wanted to turn it off and try again but I decided against it. I saw the drive light flickering so I figured it was doing something.. So I went to my bedroom to look for something.  So about 4 minutes later, I went back and the time has advanced to about 7 percent, then 12 then on till it got done. On the 10041 build, its tight as a drum.  It feels so much more polished than 9926 and even it wasn't half bad. I'm about to install some applications on it to see just how strong it is but I do like the way it feels.
  • UPDATE: Reboot trick didn't work. So I tried a refresh. Got that ball rolling and left the house. When I got back, I was on the 10041 login screen.... ....sooooo SUCCEESS! :-D I'll have to reinstall my apps, but I didn't have very many, so that's not a big deal. I haven't had a lot of time to mess with 10041 yet, but I was able to confirm that the Windows Store does NOT work. Anyone know a fix? Also, I think the start menu is a step forward from 9926 (definitely like the translucency.) But overall, my main objection to the current start menu still exists: There are only two size options: square and full-screen. I wish you could drag size it to your liking. Also, the mix of list and live tiles us nice, but right now, both point to apps. I wish the live tiles would direct to apps, and the list would point to windows explorer functions like it did in 7. Otherwise the list part is basically just window dressing. Beyond that, I'm pretty happy with 10, and think it's shaping up to be a great OS/UI! Posted via the Windows Phone Central App for Android
  • Great.  Glad to see you are back on board again.  As far as the fix, read the details in this post Mark Guim posted.  That is what I used to get that stuff back.  I had an initial issue with the 10041 store but a reboot resolved that.  Good luck. Ain't this build sweet??
  • So far, my store works just fine but my people app didn't survive the update.  Time to put on my tool belt and see whats up.
  • Excellent, fixed. I was wondering what was up with their live tiles.
  • 10041 was too unstable for me had to roll back. Kept getting blue screen. 9926 has been rather stable.
  • How did you roll back
  • A PowerShell like CMD interface for Windows Phone would be awesome. It is especially helpful to troubleshoot a lot of problems with Modern apps and allows for some geeky tinkering as well.
  • Always good to wait for the brave to try first. Thank you brave ones for your sacrifices I will wait for the next build.
  • Powershell FTW
  • Yes but please fix the hideous icon.
  • I don't see the store app. Just the beta store app. What am I missing?
  • Search or look in all apps
  • It seems like is better to skip this build I mean I've read way more bugs than features.
  • Slow ring
  • Always shows unable to install realtek HD sound driver. Having problem since I installed 9841, now using build 9926 but still facing problem. Though I have downloaded driver from realtek website and install however everytime system check for updates it shows realtek driver to be installed along with other updates and all updates get installed except realtek. Requesting solution.
  • Mine worked in 9926, but not in this build
  • WC, you are the wind(ows) beneath my wings.
  • Left it to its own devices this morning, we'll see when I get home.
  • Anyone have display resolution issues after update?
  • Yep.  My resolution is bigger than my monitor. I can't get to anything in Mail on the right hand side of the screen from the 3 uptions to reply, send, etc in the upper right hand corner to the settings that display on the right side to the ability to switch between accounts in the bottom left hand corner.
  • And just now, I went to click on something, and because of this, I mistakenly voted your post down and reported.  Was NOT meant to happen.  My bad. Honest mistake.
  • After running the Powershell script, I try to install Mail/Calendar/People app from the (green tile) Store, but get Error Code 0x80073cff. Anyone know how to fix?
  • Me 2. Can't get the apps back. Same error code.
  • Same issue here. Returns a 0x800073cff from the green Store install process.
  • I had the same issue. After many attempts, I tried the following... I opened the 32-bit version of Powershell and ran the command (in Administrator mode) mentioned in this article. It gave me an error. Then I again opened the default 64-bit version of Powershell and again ran the command (in Administrator mode). This time it worked. Then I re-downloaded the apps and installed them and they got installed this time around. Hope this info helps!
  • I totally forgot about running Powershell in 64bit. I will try that later.
  • I forgot about x64 too. Running x64 worked for me.
  • Unfortunately it didn't work for me, I get the error: get-appxprovisionedpackage : An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.

  • Great tip. It's indeed the different PowerShell architectures that make the difference. Mail app is running now fine for me. You were of great help! Thanks.
  • Great tip, I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks!
  • I updated and all these apps work without modification
  • Installed flawlessly on both my Lenovo aio & my yoga 2 13 inch.
  • Installed but modern apps keeps crashing especially Microsoft apps, search sometimes doesn't work and the icons uglier than ugly
  • Right? Search for my icon customization feed back and upvote it so we can customize the icons with .ico files. You already can to some extent but not enough to hide all the horrible yellow custard cartoon abominations they call icons.
  • Has anyone else noticed that many icons on this build are either pixelated or have jagged edges? Pretty sure it's not my system as issue wasn't present till now.
  • It's not your system. They have changed the icons with these crappy, unpolished ones. Hope they change them to something else, more professional looking.
  • icons are still ugly as hell!
  • Recycle bin, control panel and networked drive look so horrible like a child's drawing
  • The app is broken, I can only access one email account...
  • Thanks for your tip.
  • Cant install from store. Error 0x80073cff
  • There is at least Three more, without solution, in these comments! :-(
  • I had the same issue. After many attempts, I tried the following... I opened the 32-bit version of Powershell and ran the command (in Administrator mode) mentioned in this article. • my PC gets to 50% download then tells me " Your device is up to date." am still runing 9926, any body having a similar problem ?
  • I think I'm going to stay on the "slow" ring... 0_o
  • Thanks for this! Update completed last night, gonna run this right away!
  • I put in the command in power shell, but not sure if it worked. How do I know when the command worked?
  • Thx!!!!! fixed my problem :D
  •   but how do you restore those apps for the administrator account, which has no access to the store?
  • Little sum-up.... IMO, the start screen implementation is still messing up the whole personalization system and makes convergence between W10 and W10M quite impossible. The tiles need to be placed directly on the desktop. This way, W8 users get their start screen and can use the same personalization like on their phones. The recycle bin is still on the desktop instead moving it to task bar (which was requested since W7). The nice backgrounds from W8 are either gone or omitted. The start menu is pointless in functionality, it will not suffice to replace W7's. And it is also missing app-list functionality from Win8, such as different views. Also, still multiple ways of doing things, which is confusing. No app for TV-cards, despite killing Media Center. There was hardly anything changed in the last two months, UI-wise... Either they think, they have finished, or summer seems to be quite early.
  • I think this also fixed an error for me with the office preview apps not functioning!
  • Yikes. So many bugs. All good though. That's what the technical preview is for after all. Make sure you report all these things to Microsoft so they can fix them in the slow ring release. I think I'm going to give this build a miss for the moment.
  • folks we will get another build in April and it will have the new Spartan WEB browser so donot get too excited or angry at this build it will be replaced in 3 to 4 weeks. have FUN !
  • For anyone on a 64 bit system, you must use the base powershell. Do not use the Powershell (x86).
  • Keep getting error when downloading. Lol licensing issues
  • Gettin the error 0x80073cff when ni try to redownload it
  • For those that might have a problem downloading the Intel display driver update from Windows update/recovery.  I found that going direct to Intel and using their detect feature, it found and installed the missing display drivers. It used the 8.1 drivers and so far so good.  Now I seem to be up to date.

  • Run as admin powershell, not powershell 32 bit.
  • worked like a charm
  • Fix for Windoes 10 Build 10041 email allowed download from store the email application. However the display for the email is too large for the display and does not allow me to access all the email accounts that I have active. Because of the mail client taking up the display the settings options are not available.  Hopefully the next beta release will have this fixed or will revert to the Windows 8.1 Email Client. Currently I consider this mail application unusable in its current form.  Thank you!
  • This also happened with me, as workaround and I'm not sure why this works, just right click the tile to see the resizing and pinning options, don't choose any option, just right click the tile again then click it normally as you always do when you open it, it will then open in regular display (nothing will be cropped) and you will see the whole window of the app, works also with windows store
  • This didn't work for me... lucky you.... well ill patiently wait on my desktop. In the meantime ill use my surface 2
  • For Microsoft: Attention please if you are reading these comments - the AMD display drivers being installed via Windows Update are extremely buggy and cause freezes, hangs, crashes and blue screens in multiple games on numerous systems, desktops and laptops both. R9 290X, R9 270X, Radeon 7660D, Radeon 8660D, R7 250, and more. The last stable ones were in the 14.xxxx line, anything in has been very bad. Numerous reports of this in the Feedback app by various people and still MS continues to not list it as a known issue and no fix has been promised.  Please address this asap Microsoft! Thank you guys and gals!!
  • This article slipped past me, so I found it in a search result.  Really saved me.  Thanks for the tip!
  • The fix for mail, calendar and people did not work after several attempts. D..n it! I am considering returning to previous version. Haven't got rid of the Windows.old folder yet.
  • great ! error fixed ! many thanks !
  • Kinda fix problem,.. but now have other, in mail. App size ( tex ) when opened are very big. It don't fit in mail screen, so can't change mails..
  • Pasting string copied from into Windows Powershell (administrator) gives me an error. I tried multiple times confirming administrator mode for Powershell and checking codex after copy abnd paste routine. The green store tile is not produced and access to Windoes Mail is still not functional. Do we have any other verified manner in which to resolve this or just wait until Microsoft releases another version with it operational. Thank you!
  • Art, Did you ever get an answer to your question?  I copy and pasted the command, "Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename
    –like "*windowscommunicationsapps*"} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage
    –onlineGet-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename
    –like "*windowscommunicationsapps*"} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage
–" in admin mode, but I was told that access is denied. Curiously, John
  • Thank you so much, It works great for me
  • So the bigger questions is ... will we be able to remove this CRAP completely once Windows 10 is released to production?
  • Hi there,  I accidently ran the command : "Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like "*windowscommunicationsapps*"} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online" Now my windows 10 mail, calendar and people apps are not working so is the sore so I can not re-install them. Does anyone knows how to undo it?
  • Just yesterday my mail stopped working. You bring it up and it just sits on the blue window with the mail logo and nothing else. I tried this method on what was posted above but it did not work. I get the notices on the side saying I got mail but that's it.
  • get rid of the garbage links and redirects, yes?  do i need more garbge to wade through to correct a buggy OS? really?
  • This didn't work for me, it just took ages to run and the outcome was that the icon tiles were still blank.  I decided to unpin each in turn and repin from the source folder or from the Start menu Apps, this had limited success but was slow.  Then, by accident I resized one of the blank icons to medium/large/wide (?) and when I resized it again to Small (where it had been) - the icon was returnted to its original graphic! Bingo!!  Problem solved.
  • Has anyone sorted the Mail / Calender fail yet?  I have three machines running WIn10 and only ONE of these will not let me set up the Mail App... it simply gives an error and there is nothing that I have found to correct it.  I have concluded it must be some deep fault in my setup.  Any ideas anyone?
  • I am running Windows 10 10586.  When I click on the mail or calendar app nothing happens, it will not open at all but the preview of mail is showing in the tile.  You cannot reinstall the app anylonger from the store and I can not fins anything online that indicates how to fix this issue.  Anyone have any ideas????
  • I've done the uninstall and reinstall 5 times and win 10 mail still won't work. I click on an email and it just gives me a reply line. Can't open or read anything. HELP!!
