Microsoft claims Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phones

Whether or not all current Windows Phones would get the Windows 10 update due next year is certainly on the minds of many people. In the past, I have detailed why the chances of a Windows 10 update being available were much higher this time around, as opposed to the trend-breaking Windows Phone 8 OS.

On November 11, the official Lumia Twitter account has publicly declared all Lumia phones with Windows Phone 8 would get an update next year.

In a tweet responding to @_Y06_, the Lumia account is quite explicit about the new OS:

"There will be Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices :) And we will release new Windows 10 models in the future!"

We should caution that technically speaking, Microsoft's Twitter account is not necessarily their press channel, but it is rather official. Still, we are currently not aware of any technological limitations as to why current phones could not be updated, reaffirming the @Lumia tweet.

Currently, it is much too early to start speculating about update timeframes, carriers, and which devices will get the Windows 10 update. Form sources we have spoken to, those decisions, have yet to be made. However, it is looking very likely that all Windows Phone 8 Lumias will be getting that update sometime in 2015.

Perhaps even more interesting is the reference to 'Windows 10 models' in the future, as this statement omits phone from the description. As noted in the past, Microsoft is dropping references to 'phone' in regards to Windows 10 smart devices, and this seems to be another example of that shift in marketing.

Are any of you feeling better about Microsoft's tweet regarding Windows 10?

  • Woot
  • That will shut those noisy FUD spitters for a while :D
  • Good, I don't like those people. There was a reason WP 7 devices couldn't upgrade to 8. It isn't just because they can like Apple does with their devices.
  • Yeah, we've seen how that works out for older iPhones.
  • The reason WP7 devices couldn't be upgraded to WP8 was because MS forced manufactures to build woefully underpowered and underspec'd devices.  Don't believe me, look up the specs of the top smartphones of 2012,
  • Or, it could be that wp 8 is based on a new kernel and it would of taken a lot of effort that most people wouldn't of been willing to undergo in order to update the older devices to 8
  • What does WP8's kernel have to do with the hardware restrictions Microsoft put on Windows Phone hardware makers?
  • There wasn't a hardware restriction per say. It was more like the effort that would of been required in order to update the older devices was not worth their time as the majority of people would not be willing to go through said effort. As a result of said decision they could then change the hardware requirements to whatever they wanted since they were practically starting over and it wouldn't matter to current generation handset owners. The point being even if Microsoft hadn't implemented the new arbitrary hardware requirements, the old devices would still not of been updated because of the technical skill required in order to do so.
  • The hardware restrictions I was referring to were things such as display resolution and ram; Microsoft's poor way to maintain a consisitent UX.  Those said restrictions are the most common reason provided by many here as to why older phones weren't upgraded.   If what you say is true, then no wonder Windows Phone has such poor marketshare.  Those WP7.5 users willing to migrate their old phones to WP8, only happened to be the most vocal.
  • The unhappy users are always the loudest
  • One would think stringent hardware requirements would make it much easier to package the new os to match the older hardware. This being that everythign had to match both low end spec, as well as high end spec. Bottom line is that to do a complete kernel update for the older hardware to work with the new kernel, it would have required a way to install via another device, such as a PC. It would not have been able to work over an OTA upgrade path.
  • low end specs as well as high end specs? rotfl thats like trying to install windows 7 ultimate on a 15 year old pc it just does not have the hardware 2 run! installing 8 and 8.1 on an old dinosour windows 7 phone is the same concept! And i do beleive its not worth microsofts time to build to sep OS for both old and new phones !
  • It had absolutely nothing to do with "hardware restrictions". WP8 was designed to work perfectly on the lowest spec devices to the highest spec ones. The only reason is that it would've required a complete re-flash of the phone (all the bitlocker stuff aside). That requires support of ALL the carriers to not only release & test the update process for every WP7 models, but to also support the process or replace handsets that are bricked. The WP7 marketshare was so low that they all decided not to bother to go through all of that expense and aggravation as it was easier and more cost effective to just refuse to update them and sell shiny new phones for more money. They managed to put a ripped version of WP8 on the HTC HD2, possibly the HD7, so it is physically possible.
  • Hardware restrictions were for minimum standards. There was no restriction on how powerful a device could be made (this was a manufacturer choice. It was a software limitation, not a hardware one.
  • Sorry, but you have been misinformed. There was a reason why there were Android devices with 1080p displays, while the Titan II and Lumia 900 only had 480p displays. http://www.silverlightshow.net/items/WP7-Screen-Considerations-for-Devel...
  • OK Chuck.... we get it. Now stop arguing with everyone... Good Grief... My Lumia 920 will stay relevant... I'm excited about that...
  • Kernel of W7 is based on WindowsCE and W8 is based on WindowsNT, you cannot "upgrade" from one to another, the harware probably is compatible with both kernels but to switch to a different kernel you need to swipe the OS totally, W10 is an upgrade of the same OS, same kernell...
  • You can upgrade kernels. The most likely reason for dropping WP7 is hw, and hw adaptation layers in the sw side of things. The excuse that the kernel would have been difficult / impossible to upgrade is 95% MS marketing talk. It's still likely a good decision they decided to do the cut when they did though.
  • For what I know the kernel is a protected area of the OS that cannot be overwriten by another code, is part of the arquitecture of the OS (if the kernell was not designed to support more than certain number of processors then cannot be upgraded), thats why windows 95-98-Me cannot be upgraded to NT kernels like NT-XP-7 etc. WindowsCE was designed for embedded systems, PocketPC, Windows mobile, Windows Phone 7, and there's a newer version 2013. The NT kernel probably can run on WP7 hardware but not as an upgrade, must be a clean install. Somebody installed Windows98 on an iphone6 plus, also somebody installed windows 95 on a smatwatch... but I don't know if somebody has been switching WP 7 and 8 versions :(
  • Well you can't start a new smartphoneOS /ecosystem with high end phones... You have to start from the bottom
  • That's not true. The HD2 which was a Windows Mobile 6 device had the same specs as Windows Phone 7. It was hacked to run Windows Phone 7 first and Windows Phone 8 later on. They said it ran fine. The reason WP7 devices weren't upgraded is because MS didn't have any way to do an in place upgrade without wiping the device because WP7 and WP8 are completely different. WP8 and W10 for phones is really not going to be all that different.

  • Wooh, someone understands!!
  • My phone was manufactured in 2012 its a lumia 920 and its a powerhouse even under 2014 stats so better check wtf you writing because your obviously delusional when it comes to the hardware specs comment!!
  • You speak as it Microsoft hasn't failed on lofty promises like this before
  • When, exactly? And also: there's nothing "lofty" about this.
  • Lumia 810. T-Mo ain't gonna upgrade that. Let's guess if the Lumia 822, 928, and 929 will get updated either, hahaha. (Verizon laughs in background)
  • All devices, including the 810 and the others you mention, can get the Preview for Developers (which is NOT beta!). Firmware is the big problem, since it has to come from carriers.
  • Not the same developer preview!
  • ?
  • firmware can be distributed by microsoft thru the dev preview if MS really forced the issue. in fact they should be doing this already.
  • They cant... This os because the carriers have to edit the firmware slightly to fit with their network... I.e when data sense came, the carriers had to make sure it worked with their network, by doing so they have to edit it to do so (even if only slightly)
  • <I.e when data sense came, the carriers had to make sure it worked with their network, by doing so they have to edit it to do so (even if only slightly)> One thought here. If Microsoft could persuade the carriers to either work with Microsoft during the development of the next upgrade or the carriers had to send in the specifics of the modifications, everything could be incorporated in the OS and the extra work and time for modifications, and consequently delays before the upgrade reaches the end-users, could me minimized.
  • You should tell them that not me :p lol. However, would it actually speed up the development of updates? As with the amount of Carriers from different countries, It would be quite difficult to carry on making the development of the actual update, and have to communicate with every single carrier very regually, which would give them more work (and would probably take more time...) however this is just what im thinking, maybe im wrong, but it makes sense that it might actually slow down the whole update scedule for Preview For developers as updates will take MUCH longer. Plus it would also cause the same problems what Microsoft has tried to avoid when creating the Preview For Devs, as not all carriers would finish at the same time when working with MS, so people with different carriers will be getting the Preview at different times, seems like the idea of carriers working with MS to that extent may just shoot down the whole Preview scheme xD (however like i said, i may be wrong :p)
  • To install Preview for Developers, you must: 1) Register for a developer account (and provide personal information); 2) Once you sign up for a developer account and figure out all the stuff involved, download a special app; 3) Authenticate; 4) Accept the following terms of service: This software is prerelease software and Microsoft does not guarantee that it will function properly (or at all) -- you agree to release Microsoft from the Windows Phone warranty of fit-for-purpose This software will void your warranty and could damage or destroy your device and data. 5) Hope for the best and hit install... 6) Start enjoying an experience that has issues (especially on selected devices) due to a lack of upgraded drivers. If the software is "NOT BETA," why does Microsoft state in its agreement that the code is not fit for purpose, can damage your device, can corrupt your data, can void your device warranty, and is not guaranteed to be functional before you install it? Compare that to the process to install an iOS "NOT beta!" update, which is basically "hit OK," and "reboot iPhone."  No need to worry about warranties, etc.
  • Lmao, purposefully making the process seem complicated doesn't make it actually complicated. Not to mention comparing to the competition making theirs sound super easy when comparing different types of updates. Apple most certainly also has beta updates, and they're way more complicated to install; but that isn't the topic at hand. The entire dev preview process takes less than 60 seconds to do (one time, after that the updates work like usual) and making an apple, google, Microsoft account all require personal information, the information that is already on their servers. You register your email account (type it in, press enter), download the app, and login. That's it. I'm sure there are legal reasons why they have to put what they do, but neither of us should assume what the actual reasons are as we'd both be making stuff up. The point is you can compare version numbers on release and on dev preview and you definitely get final versions, but you also get beta stuff early on (thoroughly tested typically), as is the nature of such a program; you're welcome to skip the beta ones until the final OS version is reached. While I agree on the firmware thing, there's nothing forcing you to download the updates. When an update releases, wait a few days and see if people are having problems; or don't enable the preview. And on the warranty, not only have I confirmed with MS that dev preview doesn't void warranty, I have had a device replaced with dev preview loaded. Not to mention you can just uninstall the app whenever you want. It really is as simple as they could make it without angering the carriers (who, in the US, they rely on for sales). Honestly I'm surprised they got this far. But if you have a problem with it, there are certainly competing platforms that might better fit your update needs.
  • Dont buy your phone from a US carrier... lol
  • nice try, thats t-mobiles failure, not microsofts. Same with the icon, verizons failure, not microsofts
  • Really?  T-Mobile and Verizon are responsible for Microsoft's decision to foist upgrades on carriers rather than deliver them OTA?
  • No, carriers wouldn't get behind the OS if MS didn't go this route. Just look at the android update situation. Apple is the industry exception for this due to their popularity, but not even Samsung can match apple in updates. Honestly, the fact that this is still a discussion topic when we've seen this sort of behavior for years is mind boggling.
  • HUGE MS fan but they did the did this with WP7 to WP8.  They said that WP7 phones would be updated to WP8.  They lied!
  • Can you point me to a place where MS said this?  I don't mean some random blogger who had 'sources' or maybe some random MS Store employee or even a full timer in Redmond.  Where did MS say that WP phones would be upgradable to WP8?
  • In there announcement of 8.0 they were using images of the HTC Radar. And it never made it!
  • They didn't lie, they never said they'd update the kernel, just the UI elements.
  • No, they didn't. Ever
  • Microsoft never implied this. A WP7->8 upgrade was technically infeasible because the kernel is completely different. Why is this so damning to MS? It's not a bad thing to be on a new kernel, it brought tons of improvements to WP.
  • I do not recall them saying that.   There was alot of speculation that they would but I do not believe anything offical from Microsoft.
  • Can you show where Microsoft said that WP7 would be upgraded to WP8?
  • I guess you never used MS powered PDAs or WM smartphones....
  • Any body answer me please, is it will be available for Windows phone 8.1
  • Yes all Windows Phone 8(.1) devices
  • Microsoft hasn't said "all Windows Phone 8(.1) devices" will get Windows 10, they've said all Windows 8.x-based *Lumias* will get Windows 10.  That doesn't guarantee that Samsung, HTC, Blu, etc., phones will get it.  I suspect they will, but they haven't yet promised it.
  • Since nearly all wp (8) now run 8.1, yes it will
  • @efektos... Let me start early... Where is the Verizon Windows Phone 10 update? They are so slow!
  • Eh? Am I missing something, the answer to your question os that there is no wp10 yet... That's due in 2015... So they aren't being slow, Microsoft hasn't even sent it to carriers yet xD
  • Sure. But why didn't Microsoft say this months ago instead of letting the rumor percolate and spread?
  • not really. They are saying that it is "possible". Not that it "will" happen. If MSFT wants to shake the FUD naysayers, then upgrade the Icon to 8.1, and make sure all the devices get the update on launch day.
  • This news made my day
  • Awesome news!  Coming to Verizon in 2023... maybe
  • LOL haha awww that's Verizon, they don't give a fuck cause it's not IOS or Android
  • That's where People Power comes in. Group up an dump Verizon!.
  • They pull the same crap with android. Verizon is always last except with ios and only because apple strong armed them.
  • what about HTC or Samsung?
  • There not Lumia devices.  HTC and Samsung would need to make a similar statement.
  • If it won't be available for HTC 8x, I will definitely throw the phone out of the window, go to HTC Support Center and then...
  • Alternately you could use said phone to call the HTC Support Center...
  • I believe this statement implies its theroretically possible to upgrade any WP8.x device regardless of manufacturer and all of them will at least get DP. Will they get actual proper firmware updates? That remains to be seen. I promise you right now the Nokia 810 will not. I strongly suspect none of the Verizon phones will either.
  • It will be interesting to see if it will still run as smoothly., especially on lower end phones.
  • I wonder if it'll be better or worse on low end devices too. Since I upgraded my 521 to 8.1 I find it less responsive and less stable. Still works fine and I love that I can put apps on the SD card now but it's overall not as solid as it used to be.
  • same with my 520. the new features were great, sure, but performance... not so good sometimes
  • "I love that I can put apps on the SD card " well, they will never run like if they are on the phone. and it's obvious having an action center available all the time, even on games and apps will cause some difference in performace compared with 8.0 but 8.1 runs smooth for me in a 520 and 720. but I never put games or apps on the SD card because I know it will not be fast.
  • I'm noticing pauses, slowness, and even quitting out on apps stored on the phone, not just the SD card. Internet Explorer, Facebook, and especially with Cortana.
  • the 520 and 521 is not built for performance its built for economic reasons it only has 512 ram and min storage space without  being expanded! Ever hear the saying you get what you pay for? I think that fits right here!
  • Windows NT (which WP8+ is based on) has been improving performance ever since Vista was released. Windows 7 broke even with XP (sometimes 7 was better sometimes XP was better). Windows 8 is better than 7 and 10 will be either on par with 8 or better. I suspect the same thing will be true with the phones.
  • Good, cause I woulda been pissed after getting my new 1520.
  • If the come up with something better than 1520, I don't mind having ip to date hardwear, but so far there's nothing that much better, even with android or apple
  • "all phones" should mean all phones..else we wud hav to sue MS
  • I guess my only question would be how dependent the features will be with a correlating firmware update cause that can take a long time
  • New features of windows 10, any guesses?
  • Ever wonder why they called it Windows 10 not windows phone 10? It's a good sign.
  • There was an article on WMPowerUser a few days ago that suggested they may be going back to the Windows Mobile naming scheme. I think that would be a better fit due to all of the different device tpyes that will run Windows 10. Windows Phone 10 just does not sound as eloquent as Windows Mobile. http://wmpoweruser.com/will-the-next-version-of-windows-phone-be-called-windows-mobile/
  • Windows Mobile has a negative stigma attached to it. Its why to this day I felt that Windows Phone was a bad name because people interchange phone and mobile. "You're using a windows phone? I used one of those crappy things 10 years ago."
  • Boot
  • This is a trick statement, carrier response will be: "We no longer support (insert phone) after (insert date weeks before Windows Phone 10 release)."
  • Luckily, regardless if carrier supports them or not, we do still have the Developer Preview option.
  • and then, that wouldn't be Microsoft fault. and that's why you should get a unbranded and unlocked device if you want to keep getting updates without being affected to what a carrier says or not. so if you don't get the update, well, Microsoft won't be able to do anything about it unless you install a preview or something like today.
  • 810, 822, 928, Icon, HTC One M8 for Windows (Verizon model only), etc....
  • Thanks I don't live in US, at least here we have generic versions of any phone so we can install updates right away with no need to wait the lazy carries to move their arses :D

  • Whatever! Where's the next High End WP. This is getting ridiculous, & annoying. I don't care about windows 10 right now.
  • The next flagship launch will coincide with Windows 10 launch. Dont hold your breath, It could well be past 1st quarter of 2015
  • Agree. Thank god I won a free 1520 this May otherwise I am recently very tempted by the Nexus 6. Lets stick to windows phone a little bit longer.
  • If you are right, then the next flagship will likely be well past the 2nd quarter as well. I'm usually in favor of quick release-to-launch times, but currently it might be best for WP if there was at least some leaks of a new flagship.
  • I am hoping by July of next year, but not expecting it till October.  When they say "early next year", that's just wishful thinking.
  • Subject to carrier support I guess Posted via Windows Phone Central App
  • YOU MEAN *WINDOWS CENTRAL NOT WINDOWS PHONE CENTRAL >:(
  • Next thing we'll hear Microsoft is porting Windows 10 as "an app" to iOS and Android...
  • Lmfao I nearly fell off my bed laughing
  • With more features than on windows 10 phones :-)
  • Not that silly really. I remember when Apple ran a competition to see who could create an app to allow macs to dual boot with windows. This led to the development of bootcamp. I would like to see someone develop an app to let windows phone dual boot on android phones. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • :-) Edit: Well if my AT&T L920 gets Windows 10, then it will definitely be easier to wait for the L1020 successor.
  • xD
  • That's one thing the article DIDN'T mention, and I think DANIEL RUBINO should've touched on..
    ...........
W10 is available for all Lumia devices, but that only means available for carriers to choose to update devices. This isn't a guarantee that every single device will be getting the update.. Carriers still have the option of blocking updates...
.............. There's a big difference between AVAILABLE for and COMING to.....
  • Same, I'm holding on to my 920 waiting for the 1520 successor. I don't have the cash to buy the 1520 now and its successor later.
  • EBay and Amazon, I have never spent more than $200 on a new smart phone since 2009!
  • May be no need. I suspect a 1030 will be one of the devices released with W10.
  • I think 1030 will never be.
  • I think a 1030 is dead cert. I tend to think that the 930 was a nice stop gap to put some on for a while. The 920 & 1020 owners are going to be coming ready for an upgrade in the next 6 months or so. The 1020 was too widely regarded not to have a successor. I don't need a higher mp count, but I do want top level imaging. 3GB of RAM and an 810 Snapdragon would be sweet. A dedicated graphics chip may help, need the speed between shots. Oh and a shop stopping battery.
  • Amen :)
  • Microsoft Lumia Windows 10 Mobile
  • Great... Lets hope its not another disappointment from Microsoft
  • I always take what they say with a pinch of salt.
  • Grain
  • Well... Maybe he takes a few more grain(s) of salt they you would... :)
  • Haha, good point.
  • We know that Joe from Microsoft said something a few weeks back about cyan being available to all lumia devices, then turned out what he said was incorrect. So a pinch or a grain who knows. :)
  • When it comes to MS, he needs a bit more than a grain :)
  • In the UK we say pinch of salt. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Heard this news earlier :) Happy & Excited!!
  • Windows 10 rule !!!!!!!!!! :))
  • U r snap dragon? 400 or 800 ? :P
  • 600?
  • Good news.
  • Great job Microsoft thnx
  • You're welcome :)
  • It will be a great job when they will deliver
  • So exciting!!! My 830 will be ready and waiting.
  • is this truly ALL lumias, or all lumias depending on the carrier?
  • Probably by the carriers if you don't own an unlocked one. However we may see Preview for All upgrades..
  • Unlocked phones can upgrade without the need of the carrier to "Allow" it? Can they also get updates like Lumia Cyan without waiting for the damn carrier?
  • Yes that's the point :)
  • Yup, unlocked & unbranded phones bypass carrier blocks. Just having an unlocked Verizon phone isn't enough.
  • Unlocked no, Unbranded yes. There is a big difference between the two.
  • Developer Preview gets it for all Lumia I would assume, just like with WP 8.1. If you wait for the carrier, there could be problems like with Verizon and the Icon.
  • I read here on WC that 1520, maybe 1020, and another were first to get denim. Same logic should apply for for 10. Then again, I'm thinking logically...
  • Windows 10 will probably be on Developer Preview first for all Windows Phone 8.X devices. New phones with Windows 10 before the old phones get the update.
  • :D YES!!!
  • They can't afford to make the same mistake they did with WP7.5. THAT WOULD BE SUICIDE
  • No sh-it
  • Indeed, that's would so bad....
  • As an Icon user with Verizon, I won't hold my breath
  • Developer Preview
  • Microsoft has said the Icon specifically will get Denim when they had announced it originally. The matter of when is the real question. The same will probably apply in this instance.
  • They didn't know that Verizon was going to be asses about it though. Microsoft and Nokia held up their end of the bargain and Verizon gave them the finger.
  • why is it so difficult to get DP as it is much easier than Android root?
  • It doesn't always work properly and the Icon is notorius for being one of the worst offenders for the DP.
  • I have a family member who has the Icon and I got them on Developer Preview. Occasionally it takes more than once to turn on the agree but otherwise the main thing missing is Bluetooth 4 LE. If your itching to get the latest that would work. If you ever have to exchange it still working, just restore it using Nokia's tools and they can't say you have unsupported software. If you can't restore it then it is most likely dead and they can't tell your running DP.
  • Provided I can get the new screen put on my Lumia 1520 without bricking it, then yes, I'm feeling very positive about it.
  • New screen? U mean u cracked it?
  • I did. I dropped the damn thing and shattered the screen. Digitizer is acting up too. I bought a 3rd party screen that said it is up to OEM standards for cheaper than what I was quoted by a shop, so I'm going to do it myself.
  • I had to pay 250 smackaroos to get mine fixed but it was worth it because I love my 1520 :)
  • Just steal a 1520 B)
  • *-*
  • Unless you are on Verizon
  • Yeah, Verizon will be rolling out Cyan when Windows 10 is released.
  • I don't think Cyan will be released that quickly.
  • Too bad, should've bought an unlocked, international phone.
  • Those work so very well for people who are on verizon's network.
  • Then get off the network?
  • so that i can use an unlocked phone? I'm alright. I actually need my phone calls to come through.    I've tried other carriers in my area and they didnt cut it.
  • All V phones will get the update by Christmas, 2016.
  • That rules out both Verizon and Sprint. There is no such thing as an unbranded phone on those networks by design. (Thanks Qualcom)
  • Is my Lumia 1020 a wp8-device?
  • Of course.
  • Yes. Safe and sound
  • Yes.
  • Nope, it's a fork of Android that's styled like WP.
  • Hey sarcasm, give them a break. Maybe they are new to Windows Phone and didn't know that. We really don't want to scare people away so chill out dude.
  • Relax, there were 3 definitive answers above mine lol
  • Lol it's cool; I'm relaxed :) no problems here, just saying that's all. I knew that it was all sarcasm, but I figured that they may have not known that..lol
  • That there is funny...
  • We're in!
  • My 1020 is running W10 Phoone.

  • My poor 8x. I was gonna use it till following christmas. But considering how wp8.1 made my 8x slower, I'm not sure if I do wanna upgrade it if I had a choice.
  • Flagship with Snapdragon 810 and 4Gb of Ram and you win. Edit: A 2015 FLAGSHIP
  • 4gb of ram on a phone is completely unnecessary at this time
  • No way, it's perfect at this time. It's bloody necessary to run multiple "Windows" and apps at the same time as In
Windows OS. It's 2015 :) One example to compete:
    http://www.techtimes.com/articles/18248/20141021/sony-xperia-z4-specific...
  • Hahahaha you linked to an article of a "leaked" Z4. That device does not exist.
  • Leaked or not. All Android Flagships will either update to 3Gb or 4Gb. Snapdragon 810 and 4Gb of Ram makes all the sense. It's plain simple.
  • If a flagship is going to have 4GB of RAM, I want it to be  a L1540 with an Atom processor.
  • That would be a dream Phone at this time :)
  • I remember when someone I played WoW with got angry at me when I said I was putting 8GB of ram in my new computer in 2008. He said that it was a foolish waste of money. No one will ever use 8GB ram. First of all right off the bat I went over the 6GB barrier easily (which justifies my point of view) and last weekend my newer computer (also 8GB ram) crashed 2 programs I was running because it ran out of memory. Unreal Engine 4 is a ram sucker. I'm upgrading to 16GB this weekend to prevent it from happening again. So yeah I never want to say that more ram in unnecessary or that it will never be used. You never know. I think its better for a flagship to be on the bleeding edge of ridicules than get behind the competitors. WP has always played catch up. I say lets take the lead for a change.
  • I am all for the CPU, but what is the RAM good for? I do not think it is necessary for a long time. If you compare with Samsung TouchWiz and Android in general then you certainly need a lot of RAM. However, look at Nexus phones and you will see that Kit Kat and probably Lollipop too both can handle 1 GB RAM just fine.   People at Microsoft have stated previously that RAM is a constant battery drainer. More RAM equals less juice. So, 4 GB and super ultra mega super resolutions would mean trouble. 2 GB is a LOT for Windows (Phone). Look at Apple, they still go with 1 GB and 2 GB. Anything else is just marketing gimmicks.
  • 1. Need it for the competition (People look at numbers)
    2. It's actually pretty useful if the OS had some "new" features like on a true Desktop (in a phone design) way.
    3. Move forward with the tech. :)
  • LOL at ram being a battery drainer
  • RAM needs power to run and on phones it is a major battery drainer. The 'ram' in your backyard may just need grass and water .. may be thats what the LOL is about...
  • The battery draining issue is getting old. There is no such thing, it gets funny when we all say that and then comes a device with QuadHD screen, 3Gb ram, etc.. that owns a better battery performance.. Of course people behind the creating of the devices know what they are doing..
  • The screen and the cpu use FAR more power than RAM. Yes it needs power to refresh itself, but this is minimal.
  • RAM is always powered on even when the screen is off. Its the only way RAM can hold the data. RAM doesn't consume much power, but in consumes power all the time.
  • You say look at Nexus phones but have you seen the specs of the Nexus 6? They're bleeding edge with 805 chip and 3GB RAM. More RAM just allows the user to do more at the same time and with MS's obsession with productivity, it makes sense. Having less is just holding back technology for no reason.
  • More RAM = more running programs = less resuming issues.
  • And I'm talking about the Flagship. No limits here. :) and of course we need some extra features with that along with more powerful apps. Flagship that shines like a shiny Flag on a ship lol. :)
  • Lol. And we need 10000 mA battery for full day use
  • This is getting old. Tech moves on. Come on.. :)
  • Wait for super capacitors to replace Li-polymer batteries. :)
  • As if the 1020 couldn't use 3g of ram while taking photos...
  • They will release a phone with such specs in like 2017, no worries m8.
  • More like early 2015 :) lol
  • Samsung, LG, Sony and HTC in early 2015. Microsoft in early 2017.
  • Oh I thought so :) Yeah xD
  • WP does not have the BLOAT the Android does, and is a lot more optimized for low RAM phones.  My wifes 521 is really fast considering it has 512.  I dont really see the need for 4gb other then pandering to lazy developers who dont know how to properly optimize there apps.  I would only want to see 3-4GB of RAM on something like a 1020 successor since that RAM can cache large photo's and make taking high speed shots a LOT easier, and allow you to get to the next photo without having to wait for saving the last one.  SSD is a lot slower then RAM.
  • Come on, I clearly stated "Flagship". Android is amazing if you know how to use it anyways. I use both Android and WP. However I only aim high end phones. Again as I said -> Flagship :)
  • I really hope, and at the same time I really doubt that the next flagship is getting the 810, 805 seems much more likely given MS's track record. (There's even a "leak" of 940 specs saying 805.) Of course, you'll pay the same as the Android competition with 810 inside.
  • Exactly >.< that's why I think they need to step up with the competitor..
  • Definitely feeling better. Curious how the carriers can/will mess this up. No technical reason all phones couldn't get it. Can definitely see carriers complaining about upgrading old phones like the 920, despite being about as powerful as some of the newer lower end phones.
  • So what about the non lumia devices?
  • MS will probably release a Preview for those, but since those are supported by their respective manufacturers (Lumia's are MS's responsibility, ATIVs are Samsung's...) you wil have to go to those.
  • Wonderful!
  • Finally some ups after the downs we have had recently. Wow, if this gets true, windows (phone) devices will exceed iOS devices in terms of updates and support. Very good
  • When the developer preview will be coming
  • My HTC 8X on the other hand... Posted via the Windows Phone Central App for Android
  • I know. Makes me sad too. HTC 8x owners.
  • Thank fuck
  • Umm...
  • How am I feeling? Something like....BOOM!!!!
  • Nobody cares
  • I can't wait for Verizon to get windows 10 in four years
  • 4 yrs is too soon. Be realistic pls. /s
  • Really, it's obviously in 27302640263 millenia. Or an I being optimistic?
  • They will get NEW phones running W10 in 6 months of the launch probably. (The price of CDMA) The updates for W10 on the other hand? I would say probably none of them. Maybe the M8, but I doubt it.
  • Only WP users have this advantage of all models gets latest OS updates excluding WP7.8 users when compared to Android users that only latest Models gets new update versions!!
  • Ok, yay....
  • I just hope windows 10 for mobiles is good
  • Except on verizon
  • I'm wondering about other devices like HTC will get the update too or just for Lumia only ? That is windows phone 8 but not Lumia branding.
  • I really hope Microsoft offers up Windows 10 to the HTC 8x, they probably may have it for HTC one M8 windows phone, so y not the HTC 8x???
  • Microsoft is not responsible for the phones made by HTC, they are the problem of, you guessed it, HTC.
  • MS will release it to manufacturers, like HTC, Samsung etc. when its ready. Whether you get it or not depends on them and you're carrier, assuming you don't have an unbranded device.
  • Yes, I hope so. Microsoft should roll out update for all devices to make all users using Wp8 feel satisfy. Besides create friendly platform Windows Phone (or Windows) for users.
  • ...its like you didnt read the two comments right above you
  • You'll probably get DP worst case.
  • Coming to Verizon December 2036
  • And it worth to be wait :))
  • I have a feeling Verizon will hold the update and try to push folks to the new Windows 10 models that will be released.
  • Yeah right. Verizon will push folks to iPhone and Android
  • So you're saying there's a chance.
  • Dumb and Dumber
  • more like 2000 never. Instead you'll have to buy a new phone.
  • So there is a chance that unless you have a lumia phone you won't get the update. HTC, Samsung etc owners had better start thinking of trading in now.
  • Or wait and see?
  • Nah, I'm 100% sure it'll come to the ATIV SE and One. The ATIV S & 8X are on the bubble since they're launch devices.
  • Kind of expecting this, but still cool. However, none of it really matters if 10 isn't up to the task of giving WP the boost it needs to get people noticing it more.
  • It wont help WP. It just wont. Developers will still not be as excited for WP as they are for established app stores like apple and google. Idk why no one realizes this. All I read is ohh 10 will save the day, yeah right.
  • Verizon and AT&T lot, ha ha ha - not for you.
  • At this point AT&T has proved they're on the ball. I think Amber on the 920 was their only slip up. Verizon is a completely different story. They'll decide they need VZ Navigstor to only run on Mango
  • Att Got the updates at a resonable time. they only ran into a problem with one update.
  • I don't know about 7.8 (which most people didn't care too much about), but AT&T has release every update in a reasonable time frame. Maybe not first, but always reasonable. In Cyan's case they were first in the US.

  • At this point I could care less if my 920 gets it next year as I'm hoping there will be a new worthy successor FLAGSHIP by then. But I do hope the Surface 2 gets Windows 10!
  • Rt is supported.
  • couldnt.. it's I "couldn't" care less i COULD care less means you care, at least a little
  • Exciting news ever in Windows Central
  • This will be amazing!! Posted via the Windows Phone Central App for Android
  • And what of other windows phone from different manufactures
  • Unless of course said windows phone 8 device is on Verizon's network.
  • There is Lumia who won't see it...the 810.
  • I think you might be right
  • 810 owners can still get it via the developer preview.
  • I wonder how many big updates you can jump without an accompanyting firmware before it becomes a glitchy mess lol
  • 810 users could be about to find out :D
  • Am excited, but no screenshot or news about the update, and please MS should please support it's platform more, all MS apps are a joke here on WP compared to other platforms
  • What more do you want about support than an official tweet that says all WP8 phones will get W10? Jeez be happy for once.
  • Microsoft takes a lot of heat these days for not having windows phone devices their first priority in their ecosystem  so they dropped this bomb now for some positive critisism i hope it works :)
  • So if your on Verizon Wireless, we'll see it 2 years later!
  • I hope they include the HTC One (M8) for the upgrade. If they don't, OEMs won't have much incentive to make devices since users won't want to buy them.
  • It probably depends on the OEM reviewing/optimizing/releasing the update. I'm sure Mircosoft would love for all WP8 devices from all OEMs to be upgraded.
  • They will, I wouldn't worry.
  • Booyah.
  • Voilà, windows 10 for all. Seams winter is coming for Andy and iphony. The hot news of the millennium! M Super, duper exited!
  • Didn't they mention when win 10 dev preview would be out for WP? Didn't they give a month or something. During the release of the PC version... Anyone remember lol
  • Wait for the backtrack next year to happen.....
    (I hope I'm wrong!)
  • Hehe, they do have a bad habit of messaging and being too aggressive in advancing their vision.  I don't think any of the things they have walked-back were fundamental shifts in any kind of strategy - they've been consistent.  Just alternate paths and timelines for their master plans. A few quick examples: 1) XBO requiring Kinect.  It is still true that Kinect "is required to experience what Microsoft wanted you to experience."  The walk-back that it isn't mandatory is a result of realizing that it did present a pricepoint barrier for many people. Sure they may not get the "intended" experience, but should customer be penalized for that? Nah.  2) XBO offering developers the means to require online connectivity and or software distribution methods akin to Steam ecosystem.  Not explaining clearly that it was optional and that studios could still offer unregistered offline physical media games for customers that want physical and also see value in re-sell.  Again, we see the success of Steam in the PC market why not offer a similar model for the console?  The piss-poor marketing of that capability led to an apparent walk-back.  The problem is, the capability was always optional (though not necessarily for titles in development at that time which may have confused or exacerbated the issue).  So... as long as there are no fundamental changes in strategy, such as getting out the handset and console business, I can't imagine that there is anything they need to backtrack that would be ground breaking.  A technology limitation not-with-standing, Windows 10 will come. And we will rejoice.
  • IN YOUR FACE APPLE....
  • Everyone except Verizon ⁉
  • YES!
  • I thought maybe the 512mb ram on my Lumia 520 will be less for windows 10,but microsoft has proved me wrong
  • ...except the Lumia 810 :( At least there's developer preview
  • Whatever, but something is something.
  • Thankfully. It would be a huge disaster if it wasn't the case.
  • "... Except if you're on Verizon."
  • Can't wait!... No more loading resuming .... That's what it should be....
  • Great! I was sceptical about this (6.5 > 7.0 & 7.5 > 8.0 comes to mind), I still won't buy a new WP device until W10 devices come out ... Even though HTC One & Lumia 930 are really tempting.
In the meantime, my 8X is still running strong & in a good shape ... Hopefully, W10 is released to all WP8 devices ... via Developer Preview
  • Queue the Microsoft PR correction Team.
  • What about Samsung Neo on AT&T? I bought this phone mainly because of SD card feature. If I have to ever get a new phone it will be the HTC M8. Lumias are great but more of their phones need to take advantage of the Window Phone SD card feature. I would hate to go to an Android because of this very important feature. I need the extra space because I'm taking more higher res pictures & videos. It's also nice to store apps on the SD card. Which I can have more :)
  • Tbh, I would not expect the Neo to be officially supported by I would expect the One. I went from a Neo to a One and LOVE it. Double the internal memory plus there's still the SD card, bigger screen, better speakers and the camera is better. I'm still keeping my Neo as an emergency backup.
  • Will have to keep that in mind when eligible for a new phone next year.  I'm on the ATT Next program. Love the Neo with all the WP Deleoper updates right now. I have a 128gb card in it, so I'm hoping there will be a WP 10 upgrade. Just don't understand why Lumia limited itself in that dept. I already have really good Sony camera so I don't another on my phone.
  • Well, except when the carrier refuses, right? Also, let's get something high-end on AT&T already. I want a new phone.
  • Glad to know.
  • Anyone else notice they said "Windows 10" and not "Windows Phone 10"? Looks like they are for real unifying the brands marketing like some thought they might...
  • They wanted to reflect the changes at wpcentral of course...
  • There is no such thing as Windowsphone 10
  • Windows phone is dead it's all windows now!! :)
  • I know of a hardware limitation; resuming...
  • Lets just hope that this is included in the preview for developers program. Also lets hope that Microsoft starts rolling firmware updates out as part of that program too so we don't have to worry about crappy ole US carriers
  • So .. No more love to other OEMs? HTC?
  • Microsoft can't speak for other companies... they will make windows 10 available and if HTC or Samsung or other oems want Windows 10 they will have to work to make it available, with Microsoft or something. but I am sure they will have to upgrade firmwares and all, and you never know if they see a value in that. but Windows 10 will be availalble to all Windows 8.x phones, but other OEMs decide if they take it or not. But since Microsoft owns lumia phones now, they can speak for that
  • Thank you for explaining that.. I do wish htc will be kind enough to let us have windows 10 .. Or maybe MS can keep that dev. Preview system going ( which will be amazing ) ...
  • Verizon will get this in 2017
  • Or maybe never.
  • Late 2017 is possible.
  • Microsoft dint break a promise. 8.1 was said to b available for all n it is right now. This is a great news. Instead of forcing to purchase new devices, consuming old till it needs replacement sounds very economical.
  • But the real question is are existing devices upgradable to Windows 11. /jk. I'm genuinely positive about this. Infact it was actually a no-brainer that this should be the case. But here's hoping that Windows 10 for Phones really delivers on the foundation of 8.1 whilst retaining/reviving the core OS experience. No matter what kinda OS they make, there are certain UX philosophies which they shouldn't have abandoned.
  • Probably when denim update rolls out windows 10 will be there on developer's preview.
  • I see all Lumia phones. Buyer beware about the HTC one
  • Fuck yeah. Yeah babe. That's my company
  • This is so cool... Wow... Just wow...
  • Interesting the tweet specifies Lumia phones. Might that mean that other OEM devices may not receive the update? Also, as Paul Thurrott pointed out, MS has introduced 5 Lumia phones this year and it seems quite logical higher end phones are being held until Windows 10. I am quite happy with my 930 and was worth my 920. I know this phone has the engine to allow an upgrade, so I do feel confident.
  • This is only if the carrier approves the update and we all know Verizon ( AKA No update Sally ) will not approve it.  Verizon rather will discontinue 6 month old phones and sell a new model with Windows 10 on it.
  • Love you Microsoft. I am waiting for my LUMIA 630 DUAL
  • DUAL what?
  • DUAL SIM
  • You made my day! They can't go back on their own words. My L925 and 920 will last longer than expected :D and so will my mum's L535, once I grab one for her :)
  • I was agonizing over the HTC One M8 vs. the 830. Finally went 830, looks like I made the right call.   I can see why they announced for Lumia only. If 8.1 phones can be upgraded to 10, you have to assume they all can be. However with Microsoft needing to rely on the OEM's to release WP10 firmware, it's obvious that they can't speak for any of the non-Lumia product lines.   Hopefully HTC users get the update. Hopefully...
  • I'm just waiting for the release of a new windows 10 flagship device
  • I have no doubt that all actual Windows Phone 8 devices will be upgrade to Windows 10.
  • Not, if you are a Verizon customer, which I won't be in January thank God.
  • Which probably mean that samsung and htc devices are not included, which leads to me regretting the day i gave my money for ativ s. Thanks a lot samsung, you won't see me again.
  • Great news for the few people who will still be using WP.
  • Ah, I feel like I just got wrapped in a warm blanket of Microsoft love
  • So as the rest of the world gets WP10, we on Verizon MIGHT be getting WP 8.1 ....
  • My Unicorn is happy !
  • Of course that is provided carriers release them. I'm not sure AT&T will be releasing W10 for the 820 & 920.
  • Thought a whole bunch of Microsoft phone were gonna be announced on Tues? Didn't happen... So might not this... :-S
  • Not for Huawei Ascend W1 & W2 it won't. Not officially anyway.
  • How is a developer channel that gives you Microsoft-approved software not "official"? Either way, this statement was only for Lumias, so I don't even see what Huawei has to do with it.
  • Well, I was speaking about Huawei as well as Lumia. Developer channel is of course official, but there won't be any official firmware, the, W1 & W2 haven't even got official firmware for WP8.1.
  • Preview for developers!
  • What a news;!!
  • Now all the f**kers that said that WP8 won't get the update, get to apologise to all of us f**kers that said it would happen.
  • What about the virgins who said that?
  • This is such good news. Well done msft
  • That's great news for us WP users. What was obviously left out is that until then we still struggle with lack of decent app updates and OS updates namely GDR1/2. Make the MS apps on WP better, reading that would be much better than reading we're getting WP 10 on our devices next year as next year is just that NEXT YEAR!!. We live in the now and right now we want a better Skype, Office, Facebook, IE do that and we'd be good until the next big thing. What MS doesn't see is that despite how little market share they have in the mobile market, WP users will be loyal as long as they/we have parity in our app experience in comparison to our direct rivals. We can wait for any OS update, ever wonder why we don't read so much IOS and Android users crying out for updates. They're satisfied with their OS and the apps made available to them, any update is a bonus plain and simple.
  • Expected....
  • Just as long as it doesn't require Denim or Cyan... ...he wrote from his Icon.
  • "Microsoft claims 'Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices'"* "*unless you're on Verizon, in which case, please enjoy Lumia Black! It's great!"
  • I know your probably joking, but you could (in theory) get W10, while still having Lumia Black firmware.
  • Lumia Black? Must be nice to be so up to date!
    -810 owner
  • Don't you mean Lumia Amber? lol
  • When they say all Lumia will get it. Does it mean the preview will be available for all Lumia's or the actual release. And if so is it something that will be able to bypass OEMs, do they know if all OEMs will allow it, or is it something that won't require their approval
  • Surely it will be more diverse like PC's different hardware and specs, yet still be able to run?
  • So, it feels like Windows 10 will be released before Verizon releases Windows 8.1
  • Well, if you leave it to Verizon that will never happen...Those SOB at Verizon. But hopefully by the time W10 come out I will be with AT&T.
  • Thats good news as currently there isnt any other phone out there that i would change my Lumia 1520 for
  • As long as Microsoft ditches the carriers from the update process, then it will be a win; until then this means nothing.
  • "All" Windows Phone 8 devices? Bet not for the Nokia Lumia 810...
  • Blame your carrier!
  • It is for Windows phone 8 only,or 8.1 also??
  • Really? You have to ask that question?
  • Both... All x2x and x3x Lumias will be upgradeable!
  • All Windows Phone with a minimum of WP8 will get the WP10.
  • Yes and no, but i'm a 920 owner and an 810 owner by proxy, which explains why.
Thank goodness for dev preview...shame they can't preview specific firmware...
  • It's time for Windows phone OS to shine!
  • Duh. At least now the fear mongering naysayers can shut the F up.
  • Hell Yeah!
  • Great news, but I will probably use the Windows 10 launch as an excuse to get a new flagship....let's just hope Microsoft doesn't forget to launch a flagship along side.
  • I'm happy at that and looking forward to it.
  • How competitive will be windows 10 w.r.t. Android lollipop or ios 8.1?
  • Please microsoft release update 1 and 2 timeline for Windows phone 8.1 then talk about windows 10
  • Does that mean my Huawei Ascend will skip having an 8.1 update. Still hasn't come out and stuck on 8.
  • I'll believe it when my left behind aio/Cricket Lumia 620 gets it. Hopefully, they'll update the Preview for Developers program to also include firmware updates.  They really need to do that, and if they did, would make many people happy.
  • You would need an insane amount of precautions to ensure something as deep as prerelease firmware doesn't end in disaster.
  • As has been stated many times before the Preview for Developers isn't beta or "prerelease".  The Lumia 620 hardware of my phone is the same as the global 620.  I'm currently running the GB CV Cyan on my 620, so I know I'll get Win10.  Just frustrating one has to jump through hoops using a flashing tool to get the right software on it.  Imagine if if your ISP said whether or not your laptop could be updated?
  • Sprint doesn't even sell WPs anymore, hope DP allows me to see the new OS...
  • "as opposed to the trend-breaking Windows Phone 8 OS"  They did the same to Windows Mobile, so the trend is to screw the customer.
  • AWESOME!!!
  • That is why am holding of my purchase of new Lumia .i will wait nd buy wp 10 devices.
  • Does this include the 1020? Curious since we are not getting Denim
  • So my Lumia 630 won't be left out. Good news
  • I hope windows phone 10 integrates Xbox music and video into one app. I absolutely loved the Zune marketplace. It made discovering music fun and the interface was beautiful
  • Gud..
  • Awesome news. Hopefully it holds true.
  • Official Lumia icon getting windows phone 10 in 2017 hahahjajahahh
  • I finally Want some official facts on Windows 10 for Lumias!!!!!
  • Yes really excited and looking forward to windows 10!!!!!!!!
  • The more important question is how the roll out will be.... How long before some device get it will be very interesting... Also, will there be like a Windows Insider feedback program for dev previews?
  • Wow Microsoft! Just wow!
  • Win10 for my Hand PC. Been dreaming for this seamless connectivity, for so long. I wish win10 accross devices reinstate MS as a platform leader.
  • Dont worry, we will get Windows 8.10 and the be forgotten like my NOKIA Lumia 900 ;)
  • What about other devices with windows 8?Like Samsung HTC?
  • That's for those manufacturers to decide on whether to update their phones.
  • HTC promised two years support from the date of release for M8
  • Good news for sure, but since I'm on shitbag Verizon, I'll be going Dev Preview I imagine on my Icon....UNTIL my wife and I's edge agreements are up right around the time new handsets preloaded with 10 are available, and I can ditch these worthless fuckers for AT&T. I don't appreciate in the least my update being delayed so their lameass apps nobody wants or uses can "work perfectly"....which is a lie anyway since they sell the M8 with Cyan and 8.1, and haha, those apps NEVER worked perfectly before, why be bitches now? Fuck Verizon.
  • Please make bigger version of 520! I love the 535 but i hate the looks! I really like the looks of 520! The design is really nice! Please tell Microsoft this!
  • I'm guessing since I was an idiot and went with verizon for my windows phone (Lumia Icon) that I'll forever be on the preview for developers edition unless I want to be stuck on vanilla 8.
  • Love it, but I have a slight feeling it'll be more like the 7.8 update
  • As a Verizon Icon owner, I doubt my phone will ever see an upgrade like that.
  • Awesomeee!!!!
  • Yeah, could be the branding change. Or maybe we won't see any phone-devices from Microsoft anymore.
    But even if we do.
Waiting for Windows 10 (which is due in a ducking year!) to get a new Lumia flagship is a bad joke.
  • YAY! Now I really hope I won't have to pay for a newer Windows (Phone) to get Win10. Perfect!
  • Will it be a Windows 10 phone, a Windows phone or Microsoft phone. Hard to call it a Lumia as Lumia is not on the new phones, though it is called a Lumia......idk
  • But will it support Nokia Lumia 625? Because the default version of the phone's software was WP8 GDR3 and i dont think that it will update to WP10
  • well you won't be getting WP 10 or whatever they call it in 2015 if you are on Verizon. They won't be putting out WP 8.1 until 1st or 2nd Qtr 2015 not to mention Denim that is supposed to come after that!
  • Does this include NOKIA Lumia's....or just Microsoft branded Lumia's?
  • "All Lumia Windows 8 devices" is stated in the tweet.
  • Learn to read all the article before you ask a question.
  • we need OTG now  it is shame for microsoft that i have nokia lumia 1520 with the best hardware in the markt but i can not connect any other storage on my phablet but a normal smart phone with the Android os can use OTG
  • 100% of WPs does not support USBOTG as apposed to 99.99% of "normal" androids.. just saying
  • great news, but again, not about to wait for T-Mobile to release that update let alone Denim...
  • Fortunately I haven't any AT&T or Verison's device version I'm from Greece....i have nothing in common with these companies as they don't even exist in this country!
  • Γαμησέ τα
  • Yeah Microsoft better start working w/ Verizon now if we want to see the update by 2016
  • Australia. Since Verizon is that bad, why not all of you change to another carrier? That would teach Verizon to be nice to Windows Phone user.
  • Sounds hopeful. I'll be looking forward to using windows 10 on my Lumia 925
  • Good to hear but these updates in the US are carrier dependent...ask Verizon customers still waiting for Cyan...
  • Unless users can opt in to it like 8.1 I'd be willing to be my 928 will never see Windows 10 thanks to Verizon.
  • Having 10 on Windows Phone 8 is great, but then is time to upgrade to a newer WP, don't you think?. Just saying.
  • I won't be upgrading until Microsoft release a phone with a better camera than the 1020...
    (Best phone I've ever owned)
  • I figured they would be upgraded. I understand what happened 2+ yrs ago, but i highly doubted that MS would pull that again especially with the changes made under the hood for wp8
  • Awesome. But what would be even more impressive is if ALL windows phone 8 devices get access to the upgrade SIMULTANEOUSLY. Blanket update FTW.
  • fingers crossed for the 1030 as their first Windows 10 device
  • Happy to hear! But still wary. I stick by my earlier comment in another post. If they don't upgrade WP8 phones to Win10 next year, it wont happen ever. But I'm still happy about this news. Seems my plan to hold onto my 920 until a Win10 phone comes out might have been a great plan after all!
  • Carrier dependent?
  • HA, I believe the same was said in the past, but my Lumia 810 is still running on Amber and the dev preview. Go T-Mobile..
  • FUCK MY HTC 8X... FUCK!
  • Coming to Verizon in 2087!
  • I'm hoping for a preview soon like they have with the desktop version. Although, I'm sure the preview will come in the form of developer preview which probably wont be available until BUILD next year. Be worth the wait!
  • Wowww that's amazing news!!!!
  • Like the Lumia 810... :/
  • I couldn't care less.
When will it be available? By the end of next year? So it will be another year of endless waiting where almost nothing will happen for wp8.1 and Microsoft will focus on android and iOS apps and services. (I'm already hearing your voices again: be patient, everything will get better when windows10 arrives... yada yada yada)
Until then I (and probably many others too) will have switched to other platforms...
  • Yes it will be kind of a long wait...
  • Hope somebody doesnt' get fired tomorrow because of this tweet. Not because I care about the fate of that person, but because I want the darned update! :P ;)
  • Good :)
  • Windows 10 for phones or windows phone? To me, it will always be WP.
  • Good news, new year will bring a new phone and new software.
  • Can't wait for it.
  • So that means that T-mobile phones will get their upgrades sometime in 2016.
  • Not T-Mobiles fault... Microsoft related issue
  • This is pushing me towards a Lumia even more
  • Feeling happy about my Lumia 930 getting the new version... now I need a Lumia 940 Dual SIM :)
  • Whennn
  • BOOM!!! ℹ❤ W P
  • Men oh men, im not sure what can they replace my 1520
  • What about the T-Mobile 810 which will not get Cyan or Denim? Or are they counting the DP?
  • Wowowowo maybe Im dreaming? Good lord thanks Microsoft
  • yes im a bit happier now, but still hoping for the they when I can finally buy a phone and install vanilla windows on it, or android if that's what you like, with no bloat of any kind, just pure OS candy, which can use my hardware to its fullest(cant use LTE band 4 on my own hardware -928-) im tired of it
  • Cannot wait! After upgrading to Windows 10 I'm sure we'll be forced to either flash back to 8 or buy a new phone...
  • But will those without developer preview ever get it through the carriers? Most likely not -_- I have the developer preview, but I'm just looking out for those who don't. Lol.
  • Then it is obvious Verizon wireless customers will see the upgrade in 2017 Q4, maybe. Verizon has declined to comment on the story, or the existence of Windows Phone.
  • Are any of you feeling better about Microsoft's tweet regarding Windows 10?
Yes :) I hope it does not run slow or choppy on my 1020. The hardware is not aging well hehe.
  • Looks like my SIM free Nokia Lumia 1520 might have been a good buy then.
    :-)
  • It well be great for lumia user but for lumia 7.0 user you have to changed to windows 8.0
  • *scoff*. Sometime next year probably means that Verizon will get it around December just because.
  • Just because they say "there will be upgrades" doesn't mean they will be upgraded. Do carriers get in the way of new OS upgrades?
  • Icon no longer available at VZ. Tried to get one today."discontinued". what a bummer.
  • current lumia phones , not nokia lumia ? Just thinking...
  • Except fro those on Verizon who will still be wating for Cyan/WP8.1.
  • All Lumias? Hahahahaha, 810, 822, 928, Icon? LOL
  • Great
  • This is a great development. Now, maybe Daniel Rubino can give me a take on this, but if now we are getting Windows 10 as our phone OS which is the same platform that is being used on the desktop doesn't that make Windows Phones much more attractive to developers? I mean Microsoft can do a great marketing campaign by saying Windows 10 devices are the most popular around the world more than Apple iOS and Android. Just putting this out there...
  • Microsoft took months just declaring Lumia Denim(and still not available to old Lumia phones) and this is all together a New OS so guys be ready to wait for years before you get it installed in your W8 Phone ......
  • Lumia 1020 include ??
  • Finally Microsoft confirm this "all currently windows phone 8 device will upgradable to windows 10"
wow I am sure Microsoft is the no.1 OS for me.. And world no.1 OS in future...
  • I am sure windows is the better than android,ios.. And I am sure finally Microsoft is the no.1 OS in future and now no.1 OS for me....
  • What Microsoft is doing , is being   the same model than apple does, i mean it was obvious that later of windows phone 8.1 would jump to 10, is not windows 9 so was obvious, and their policy of upgrade   devices is just very nice at least, about Windows 7,5-7.8 users,  just  could understand they got an  durable   thing , but they must have in mind that in Android also nobody give you an  upgrade to the next    version so   is not justified those rants. if look further there will found an article where Microsoft explains why they did not give an update to the windows 7.8 users to 8 ,
  • Yippeeeee.....i think all the Lumias should probably be getting the update at the same time we had got the 8.1 update.
  • Actionable live tiles pls
  •     Yes and no. Yes, I'm happy that Microsoft is confirming that ALL WP8 devices will get WP10. No, I'm not confident in any of the carriers making that update available to devices that are two to three years old. T-Mobile has already kicked the 810 to the curb and I haven't heard anything about the HTC 8S even though both devices are capable of getting the update. I feel like I'm saying this in every post now but Microsoft really needs to just bypass the carriers altogether ala Apple when releasing OS updates.
  • I love u Nokia lumia, ups :(
  • yeah cool but any dare for that?
  • That's fair enough
  • "Windows 10 upgrades"... Upgrades, and in plural. Wouldn't they have said Windows 10, period, if they meant all phones would be getting Windows 10? Sounds like a minor smokescreen, with older devices just getting some Windows 10 features...
  • leak something!
  • Windows Phone 7 was bulit on Windows CE. Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 is built on Windows NT. Windows 10 will be NT to so a update process will be more easy.
  • Can't wait for windows phone 10
  • Lumia 900? Lumia 810? Should put a disclaimer on that lol.
  • Great news :)
  • I wonder what will be new in windows 10. I guess I can wait till then. I was about to jump ship to Android lollipop. Been with WP since win7 . Loved my titan back then but now years later im pretty tired of WP... Love my 1520 though.
  • All that matters is the features & the time the new OS is released especially when we have latest nexus or lollipop in place.
    MS should buck up.
  • I'll play devil's advocate now. 1. The tweet did not mention the Nokia Lumia phones which are probably more than 90% of all WP 8 phones sold. Just saying the Lumias will get W10 is like saying all of the phones produced after poaching Nokia will get the update, the rest will not. 2. Product lifecycle. That fancy term which MS invented a while ago to explain why certain products are not maintained anymore. Would be a good way to not support the 1st gen WP8 phones, if they don't go the way described under 1.
  • Now that's what I call caring for customers. Windows 10 upgrade for every single device, from the dirt-cheap yet super efficient 520, to the flagship class behemoth 1520. Way to go Microsoft :) At the risk of sounding a bit over-excited, go suck on some nuts iFruits and LagDroids. PS: To my fellow Windows Phone (or Windows) using friends on Verizon, I feel your frustration. Just go contract free and kick those nutjobs to the curb already!
  • That would be great..... If we receive an update
  • So does mean Windows Phone OS is going to officially become Windows OS for phones? No more Windows Phone Phone phone phone... Just Windows phone?
  • Just going like apple
  • Ifeel better
  • Yay thank you Microsoft
  • Verizon users wont get it until 2018
  • Android cheap entry level phones are totally doom!!!!!!!
  • this is total crap what you are talking here about WP7 devices. There is NO valid reason why those were not upgradable!! The platform is the same ARM!, most of them have 512MB like the 520, the same resolution so don't start with excuses. MS simply did not want to do it! They were to lazy to adapt the WP8 OS to the old hardware components in respect of drivers. HTC HD7 and Lumia 900 were two great devices that users got tricked with when WP8 was released in the same period MS was still promoting these old devices! And to be frankly, the HD7 was a beauty comparing to the HTC 8X which is ugly as h***. So please stop this nonsense of a subject about the old WP7/7.5, everyone knows that it COULD have been possible to update those devices too as long as the specs are much the same with some wp8 devices except for the CPU which on WP7 was single core..but let's be serious, don't tell me because of a second core it was not possible LMFAO!!  Put it short, MS screw users up! and in this way they did more damage than good, faith in MS's platform faded away. Not only that WP7 was a total failure OS with lots of basic features missing (eg. USSD commands, BT was most of the time broken than working etc, no turn by turn offline GPS SW available etc) but it was updated to a 7.8 with a new homescreen and that was it...you call this respect to the customers? We all hope that Win10 will be available for current devices because if those idiots try to make the same mistake like they did with WP7 NON upgradable to WP8 thing, they will sure fail forever in gathering market share, users and developers...
  • That would be extremly cool of Microsoft but I highy doubt that'll happend due to hardware and firmware limitations. Let's wait and hope this predictions come true :)))
  • So right now why should anyone want to buy any new lumia phones out there as opposed to waiting for the WIndows 10 smart devices that will be coming soon. and I hope "future" is sooner than later
  • What about lumia 610...it's trashed phone for Microsoft??
  • What about lumia 610??
  • What about my lumia 625 :) ?
  • Notice that it says "lumia" sooo dont hold your breath on the other devices like htc and samsung...as well as low end ones :P
  • I don't see me changing phone any time before Windows 10 is released, so this is great news, looking forward to it on my 1020! It's not as official a confirmation as i'd hoped, but it'll do.
  • Lumia 510 anyone?
  • +520
  • What I love about Microsoft is its commitment to making their OS so user friendly and to allow their hardware to work with it. My iPhone 4s is totally broken since 8.1 update. No battery time, reboots, no touchscreen working and apps no longer work. It is an expensive brick. The updates on my cheap 525 keep it running smoothly, no hiccups, no problems. I am abandoning Apple products for good. Cannot wait for Windows 10 on my mobile. Loving it on my laptop.
  • it will be bullcrap if you own a non-Lumia phone and not get an update.
  • Any images or concept on ui or anything new feature about wp10?? Coz i really want to knw..
  • This is it One OS Microsoft's Best Move To Incline us and Themselves...
  • Would be helpful if they could narrow the date down. "[...] sometime in 2015." is not gonna help people with phones like a 920 which came out in Q3 2012 if MS releases the update in Q4 2015 (even mroe so if the update is bundled with the Lumia update which usually needs to be released by the carriers). I hate to sound negative every time I comment on such news but MS really needs to decrease update intervals and make the road map for them more transparent. I switched to Windows Phone because the update cycle on Android was only a sad joke. My HTC Magic is a neanderthal (version 1.5), my Galaxy S Plus is stuck on 2.3.6 and my Nexus S got 4.1.2 but the update was flawed (enormous battery drain) and didn't get fixed (yes I know, I could unlock and put a custom rom on them but I'm just not interested in that, I want it to work out of the box, not having to tinker around with it just to make it work).
While on WP the update cycle is much longer, the amount of updates is just....well, we're still on 8.1 with only mediocre improvements.
  • ...not ALL Windows Phone 8 Lumias...
  • This is why MS is not really introducing any new WP devices.  They are waiting to release Windows 10 and then introduce new phones.  Which is smart, because why leave updating to the average person who can barely handle managing the settings on their phone.  You would be asking for trouble.
  • Wow it i svery good news for all Lumia lovers.
  • If iOS developers can use a windows pc to program for iPhone or any other iOS device, I don't think anybody will use the MACs or any Apple computer
