Microsoft claims Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phones

The reason WP7 devices couldn't be upgraded to WP8 was because MS forced manufactures to build woefully underpowered and underspec'd devices.  Don't believe me, look up the specs of the top smartphones of 2012,

Or, it could be that wp 8 is based on a new kernel and it would of taken a lot of effort that most people wouldn't of been willing to undergo in order to update the older devices to 8

What does WP8's kernel have to do with the hardware restrictions Microsoft put on Windows Phone hardware makers?   

There wasn't a hardware restriction per say. It was more like the effort that would of been required in order to update the older devices was not worth their time as the majority of people would not be willing to go through said effort. As a result of said decision they could then change the hardware requirements to whatever they wanted since they were practically starting over and it wouldn't matter to current generation handset owners. The point being even if Microsoft hadn't implemented the new arbitrary hardware requirements, the old devices would still not of been updated because of the technical skill required in order to do so.

The hardware restrictions I was referring to were things such as display resolution and ram; Microsoft's poor way to maintain a consisitent UX.  Those said restrictions are the most common reason provided by many here as to why older phones weren't upgraded.   If what you say is true, then no wonder Windows Phone has such poor marketshare.  Those WP7.5 users willing to migrate their old phones to WP8, only happened to be the most vocal.

One would think stringent hardware requirements would make it much easier to package the new os to match the older hardware. This being that everythign had to match both low end spec, as well as high end spec. Bottom line is that to do a complete kernel update for the older hardware to work with the new kernel, it would have required a way to install via another device, such as a PC. It would not have been able to work over an OTA upgrade path.

It had absolutely nothing to do with "hardware restrictions". WP8 was designed to work perfectly on the lowest spec devices to the highest spec ones. The only reason is that it would've required a complete re-flash of the phone (all the bitlocker stuff aside). That requires support of ALL the carriers to not only release & test the update process for every WP7 models, but to also support the process or replace handsets that are bricked. The WP7 marketshare was so low that they all decided not to bother to go through all of that expense and aggravation as it was easier and more cost effective to just refuse to update them and sell shiny new phones for more money. They managed to put a ripped version of WP8 on the HTC HD2, possibly the HD7, so it is physically possible.

Hardware restrictions were for minimum standards. There was no restriction on how powerful a device could be made (this was a manufacturer choice. It was a software limitation, not a hardware one.

Kernel of W7 is based on WindowsCE and W8 is based on WindowsNT, you cannot "upgrade" from one to another, the harware probably is compatible with both kernels but to switch to a different kernel you need to swipe the OS totally, W10 is an upgrade of the same OS, same kernell...

You can upgrade kernels. The most likely reason for dropping WP7 is hw, and hw adaptation layers in the sw side of things. The excuse that the kernel would have been difficult / impossible to upgrade is 95% MS marketing talk. It's still likely a good decision they decided to do the cut when they did though.

For what I know the kernel is a protected area of the OS that cannot be overwriten by another code, is part of the arquitecture of the OS (if the kernell was not designed to support more than certain number of processors then cannot be upgraded), thats why windows 95-98-Me cannot be upgraded to NT kernels like NT-XP-7 etc. WindowsCE was designed for embedded systems, PocketPC, Windows mobile, Windows Phone 7, and there's a newer version 2013. The NT kernel probably can run on WP7 hardware but not as an upgrade, must be a clean install. Somebody installed Windows98 on an iphone6 plus, also somebody installed windows 95 on a smatwatch... but I don't know if somebody has been switching WP 7 and 8 versions :(

That's not true. The HD2 which was a Windows Mobile 6 device had the same specs as Windows Phone 7. It was hacked to run Windows Phone 7 first and Windows Phone 8 later on. They said it ran fine. The reason WP7 devices weren't upgraded is because MS didn't have any way to do an in place upgrade without wiping the device because WP7 and WP8 are completely different. WP8 and W10 for phones is really not going to be all that different.

All devices, including the 810 and the others you mention, can get the Preview for Developers (which is NOT beta!). Firmware is the big problem, since it has to come from carriers.

If Microsoft could persuade the carriers to either work with Microsoft during the development of the next upgrade or the carriers had to send in the specifics of the modifications, everything could be incorporated in the OS and the extra work and time for modifications, and consequently delays before the upgrade reaches the end-users, could me minimized.

You should tell them that not me :p lol. However, would it actually speed up the development of updates? As with the amount of Carriers from different countries, It would be quite difficult to carry on making the development of the actual update, and have to communicate with every single carrier very regually, which would give them more work (and would probably take more time...) however this is just what im thinking, maybe im wrong, but it makes sense that it might actually slow down the whole update scedule for Preview For developers as updates will take MUCH longer. Plus it would also cause the same problems what Microsoft has tried to avoid when creating the Preview For Devs, as not all carriers would finish at the same time when working with MS, so people with different carriers will be getting the Preview at different times, seems like the idea of carriers working with MS to that extent may just shoot down the whole Preview scheme xD (however like i said, i may be wrong :p)

Compare that to the process to install an iOS "NOT beta!" update, which is basically "hit OK," and "reboot iPhone."  No need to worry about warranties, etc.

Lmao, purposefully making the process seem complicated doesn't make it actually complicated. Not to mention comparing to the competition making theirs sound super easy when comparing different types of updates. Apple most certainly also has beta updates, and they're way more complicated to install; but that isn't the topic at hand. The entire dev preview process takes less than 60 seconds to do (one time, after that the updates work like usual) and making an apple, google, Microsoft account all require personal information, the information that is already on their servers. You register your email account (type it in, press enter), download the app, and login. That's it. I'm sure there are legal reasons why they have to put what they do, but neither of us should assume what the actual reasons are as we'd both be making stuff up. The point is you can compare version numbers on release and on dev preview and you definitely get final versions, but you also get beta stuff early on (thoroughly tested typically), as is the nature of such a program; you're welcome to skip the beta ones until the final OS version is reached. While I agree on the firmware thing, there's nothing forcing you to download the updates. When an update releases, wait a few days and see if people are having problems; or don't enable the preview. And on the warranty, not only have I confirmed with MS that dev preview doesn't void warranty, I have had a device replaced with dev preview loaded. Not to mention you can just uninstall the app whenever you want. It really is as simple as they could make it without angering the carriers (who, in the US, they rely on for sales). Honestly I'm surprised they got this far. But if you have a problem with it, there are certainly competing platforms that might better fit your update needs.

Apple is the industry exception for this due to their popularity, but not even Samsung can match apple in updates. Microsoft never implied this. A WP7->8 upgrade was technically infeasible because the kernel is completely different. Why is this so damning to MS? It's not a bad thing to be on a new kernel, it brought tons of improvements to WP.

I do not recall them saying that.   There was alot of speculation that they would but I do not believe anything offical from Microsoft.

Microsoft hasn't said "all Windows Phone 8(.1) devices" will get Windows 10, they've said all Windows 8.x-based *Lumias* will get Windows 10.  That doesn't guarantee that Samsung, HTC, Blu, etc., phones will get it.  I suspect they will, but they haven't yet promised it.

I believe this statement implies its theroretically possible to upgrade any WP8.x device regardless of manufacturer and all of them will at least get DP. Will they get actual proper firmware updates? That remains to be seen. I promise you right now the Nokia 810 will not. I strongly suspect none of the Verizon phones will either.

It will be interesting to see if it will still run as smoothly., especially on lower end phones.

I wonder if it'll be better or worse on low end devices too. Since I upgraded my 521 to 8.1 I find it less responsive and less stable. Still works fine and I love that I can put apps on the SD card now but it's overall not as solid as it used to be.

I'm noticing pauses, slowness, and even quitting out on apps stored on the phone, not just the SD card. Internet Explorer, Facebook, and especially with Cortana.

the 520 and 521 is not built for performance its built for economic reasons it only has 512 ram and min storage space without  being expanded! Ever hear the saying you get what you pay for? I think that fits right here!

Windows NT (which WP8+ is based on) has been improving performance ever since Vista was released. Windows 7 broke even with XP (sometimes 7 was better sometimes XP was better). Windows 8 is better than 7 and 10 will be either on par with 8 or better. I suspect the same thing will be true with the phones.

There was an article on WMPowerUser a few days ago that suggested they may be going back to the Windows Mobile naming scheme. I think that would be a better fit due to all of the different device tpyes that will run Windows 10. Windows Mobile has a negative stigma attached to it. Its why to this day I felt that Windows Phone was a bad name because people interchange phone and mobile. "You're using a windows phone? I used one of those crappy things 10 years ago."

Agree. Thank god I won a free 1520 this May otherwise I am recently very tempted by the Nexus 6. Lets stick to windows phone a little bit longer.

If you are right, then the next flagship will likely be well past the 2nd quarter as well. I'm usually in favor of quick release-to-launch times, but currently it might be best for WP if there was at least some leaks of a new flagship.

I am hoping by July of next year, but not expecting it till October.  When they say "early next year", that's just wishful thinking.

W10 is available for all Lumia devices, but that only means available for carriers to choose to update devices. This isn't a guarantee that every single device will be getting the update.. Carriers still have the option of blocking updates...

I think a 1030 is dead cert. I tend to think that the 930 was a nice stop gap to put some on for a while. The 920 & 1020 owners are going to be coming ready for an upgrade in the next 6 months or so. The 1020 was too widely regarded not to have a successor. I don't need a higher mp count, but I do want top level imaging. 3GB of RAM and an 810 Snapdragon would be sweet. A dedicated graphics chip may help, need the speed between shots. Oh and a shop stopping battery.

Windows 10 will probably be on Developer Preview first for all Windows Phone 8.X devices. New phones with Windows 10 before the old phones get the update.

Microsoft has said the Icon specifically will get Denim when they had announced it originally. The matter of when is the real question. The same will probably apply in this instance.

They didn't know that Verizon was going to be asses about it though. Microsoft and Nokia held up their end of the bargain and Verizon gave them the finger.

why is it so difficult to get DP as it is much easier than Android root?

It doesn't always work properly and the Icon is notorius for being one of the worst offenders for the DP.

I have a family member who has the Icon and I got them on Developer Preview. Occasionally it takes more than once to turn on the agree but otherwise the main thing missing is Bluetooth 4 LE. If your itching to get the latest that would work. If you ever have to exchange it still working, just restore it using Nokia's tools and they can't say you have unsupported software. If you can't restore it then it is most likely dead and they can't tell your running DP.

Provided I can get the new screen put on my Lumia 1520 without bricking it, then yes, I'm feeling very positive about it.

I did. I dropped the damn thing and shattered the screen. Digitizer is acting up too. I bought a 3rd party screen that said it is up to OEM standards for cheaper than what I was quoted by a shop, so I'm going to do it myself.

I had to pay 250 smackaroos to get mine fixed but it was worth it because I love my 1520 :)

Leaked or not. All Android Flagships will either update to 3Gb or 4Gb. Snapdragon 810 and 4Gb of Ram makes all the sense. It's plain simple.

If a flagship is going to have 4GB of RAM, I want it to be  a L1540 with an Atom processor.

I remember when someone I played WoW with got angry at me when I said I was putting 8GB of ram in my new computer in 2008. He said that it was a foolish waste of money. No one will ever use 8GB ram. First of all right off the bat I went over the 6GB barrier easily (which justifies my point of view) and last weekend my newer computer (also 8GB ram) crashed 2 programs I was running because it ran out of memory. Unreal Engine 4 is a ram sucker. I'm upgrading to 16GB this weekend to prevent it from happening again. So yeah I never want to say that more ram in unnecessary or that it will never be used. You never know. I think its better for a flagship to be on the bleeding edge of ridicules than get behind the competitors. WP has always played catch up. I say lets take the lead for a change.

I am all for the CPU, but what is the RAM good for? I do not think it is necessary for a long time. If you compare with Samsung TouchWiz and Android in general then you certainly need a lot of RAM. However, look at Nexus phones and you will see that Kit Kat and probably Lollipop too both can handle 1 GB RAM just fine.   People at Microsoft have stated previously that RAM is a constant battery drainer. More RAM equals less juice. So, 4 GB and super ultra mega super resolutions would mean trouble. 2 GB is a LOT for Windows (Phone). Look at Apple, they still go with 1 GB and 2 GB. Anything else is just marketing gimmicks.    

1. Need it for the competition (People look at numbers)
2. It's actually pretty useful if the OS had some "new" features like on a true Desktop (in a phone design) way.
3. Move forward with the tech. :)

RAM needs power to run and on phones it is a major battery drainer. The 'ram' in your backyard may just need grass and water .. may be thats what the LOL is about...

The battery draining issue is getting old. There is no such thing, it gets funny when we all say that and then comes a device with QuadHD screen, 3Gb ram, etc.. that owns a better battery performance.. Of course people behind the creating of the devices know what they are doing..

The screen and the cpu use FAR more power than RAM. Yes it needs power to refresh itself, but this is minimal.

RAM is always powered on even when the screen is off. Its the only way RAM can hold the data. RAM doesn't consume much power, but in consumes power all the time.

You say look at Nexus phones but have you seen the specs of the Nexus 6? They're bleeding edge with 805 chip and 3GB RAM. More RAM just allows the user to do more at the same time and with MS's obsession with productivity, it makes sense. Having less is just holding back technology for no reason.

More RAM = more running programs = less resuming issues.

And I'm talking about the Flagship. No limits here. :) and of course we need some extra features with that along with more powerful apps. Flagship that shines like a shiny Flag on a ship lol. :)

WP does not have the BLOAT the Android does, and is a lot more optimized for low RAM phones.  My wifes 521 is really fast considering it has 512.  I dont really see the need for 4gb other then pandering to lazy developers who dont know how to properly optimize there apps.  I would only want to see 3-4GB of RAM on something like a 1020 successor since that RAM can cache large photo's and make taking high speed shots a LOT easier, and allow you to get to the next photo without having to wait for saving the last one.  SSD is a lot slower then RAM.

Come on, I clearly stated "Flagship". Android is amazing if you know how to use it anyways. I use both Android and WP. However I only aim high end phones. Again as I said -> Flagship :)

I really hope, and at the same time I really doubt that the next flagship is getting the 810, 805 seems much more likely given MS's track record. (There's even a "leak" of 940 specs saying 805.) Of course, you'll pay the same as the Android competition with 810 inside.

Definitely feeling better. Curious how the carriers can/will mess this up. No technical reason all phones couldn't get it. Can definitely see carriers complaining about upgrading old phones like the 920, despite being about as powerful as some of the newer lower end phones.

Microsoft is not responsible for the phones made by HTC, they are the problem of, you guessed it, HTC.

MS will release it to manufacturers, like HTC, Samsung etc. when its ready. Whether you get it or not depends on them and you're carrier, assuming you don't have an unbranded device.

Att Got the updates at a resonable time. they only ran into a problem with one update.

I don't know about 7.8 (which most people didn't care too much about), but AT&T has release every update in a reasonable time frame. Maybe not first, but always reasonable. In Cyan's case they were first in the US.
 

At this point I could care less if my 920 gets it next year as I'm hoping there will be a new worthy successor FLAGSHIP by then. But I do hope the Surface 2 gets Windows 10!

I hope they include the HTC One (M8) for the upgrade. If they don't, OEMs won't have much incentive to make devices since users won't want to buy them.

Hehe, they do have a bad habit of messaging and being too aggressive in advancing their vision.  I don't think any of the things they have walked-back were fundamental shifts in any kind of strategy - they've been consistent.  Just alternate paths and timelines for their master plans. A few quick examples: 1) XBO requiring Kinect.  It is still true that Kinect "is required to experience what Microsoft wanted you to experience."  The walk-back that it isn't mandatory is a result of realizing that it did present a pricepoint barrier for many people. Sure they may not get the "intended" experience, but should customer be penalized for that? Nah.  2) XBO offering developers the means to require online connectivity and or software distribution methods akin to Steam ecosystem.  Not explaining clearly that it was optional and that studios could still offer unregistered offline physical media games for customers that want physical and also see value in re-sell.  Again, we see the success of Steam in the PC market why not offer a similar model for the console?  The piss-poor marketing of that capability led to an apparent walk-back.  The problem is, the capability was always optional (though not necessarily for titles in development at that time which may have confused or exacerbated the issue).  So... as long as there are no fundamental changes in strategy, such as getting out the handset and console business, I can't imagine that there is anything they need to backtrack that would be ground breaking.  A technology limitation not-with-standing, Windows 10 will come. And we will rejoice.

What about Samsung Neo on AT&T? I bought this phone mainly because of SD card feature. If I have to ever get a new phone it will be the HTC M8. Lumias are great but more of their phones need to take advantage of the Window Phone SD card feature. I would hate to go to an Android because of this very important feature. I need the extra space because I'm taking more higher res pictures & videos. It's also nice to store apps on the SD card. Which I can have more :)

Tbh, I would not expect the Neo to be officially supported by I would expect the One. I went from a Neo to a One and LOVE it. Double the internal memory plus there's still the SD card, bigger screen, better speakers and the camera is better. I'm still keeping my Neo as an emergency backup.

Will have to keep that in mind when eligible for a new phone next year.  I'm on the ATT Next program. Love the Neo with all the WP Deleoper updates right now. I have a 128gb card in it, so I'm hoping there will be a WP 10 upgrade. Just don't understand why Lumia limited itself in that dept. I already have really good Sony camera so I don't another on my phone.

Microsoft can't speak for other companies... they will make windows 10 available and if HTC or Samsung or other oems want Windows 10 they will have to work to make it available, with Microsoft or something. but I am sure they will have to upgrade firmwares and all, and you never know if they see a value in that. but Windows 10 will be availalble to all Windows 8.x phones, but other OEMs decide if they take it or not. But since Microsoft owns lumia phones now, they can speak for that

Microsoft dint break a promise. 8.1 was said to b available for all n it is right now. This is a great news. Instead of forcing to purchase new devices, consuming old till it needs replacement sounds very economical.

But the real question is are existing devices upgradable to Windows 11. /jk. I'm genuinely positive about this. Infact it was actually a no-brainer that this should be the case. But here's hoping that Windows 10 for Phones really delivers on the foundation of 8.1 whilst retaining/reviving the core OS experience. No matter what kinda OS they make, there are certain UX philosophies which they shouldn't have abandoned.

Probably when denim update rolls out windows 10 will be there on developer's preview.

Also, as Paul Thurrott pointed out, MS has introduced 5 Lumia phones this year and it seems quite logical higher end phones are being held until Windows 10. I am quite happy with my 930 and was worth my 920. I know this phone has the engine to allow an upgrade, so I do feel confident.

This is only if the carrier approves the update and we all know Verizon ( AKA No update Sally ) will not approve it.  Verizon rather will discontinue 6 month old phones and sell a new model with Windows 10 on it.

I was agonizing over the HTC One M8 vs. the 830. Finally went 830, looks like I made the right call.   I can see why they announced for Lumia only. If 8.1 phones can be upgraded to 10, you have to assume they all can be. However with Microsoft needing to rely on the OEM's to release WP10 firmware, it's obvious that they can't speak for any of the non-Lumia product lines.   Hopefully HTC users get the update. Hopefully...

Well, I was speaking about Huawei as well as Lumia. Developer channel is of course official, but there won't be any official firmware, the, W1 & W2 haven't even got official firmware for WP8.1.

That's great news for us WP users. What was obviously left out is that until then we still struggle with lack of decent app updates and OS updates namely GDR1/2. Make the MS apps on WP better, reading that would be much better than reading we're getting WP 10 on our devices next year as next year is just that NEXT YEAR!!. We live in the now and right now we want a better Skype, Office, Facebook, IE do that and we'd be good until the next big thing. What MS doesn't see is that despite how little market share they have in the mobile market, WP users will be loyal as long as they/we have parity in our app experience in comparison to our direct rivals. We can wait for any OS update, ever wonder why we don't read so much IOS and Android users crying out for updates. They're satisfied with their OS and the apps made available to them, any update is a bonus plain and simple.

I'll believe it when my left behind aio/Cricket Lumia 620 gets it. Hopefully, they'll update the Preview for Developers program to also include firmware updates.  They really need to do that, and if they did, would make many people happy.

You would need an insane amount of precautions to ensure something as deep as prerelease firmware doesn't end in disaster.

As has been stated many times before the Preview for Developers isn't beta or "prerelease".  The Lumia 620 hardware of my phone is the same as the global 620.  I'm currently running the GB CV Cyan on my 620, so I know I'll get Win10.  Just frustrating one has to jump through hoops using a flashing tool to get the right software on it.  Imagine if if your ISP said whether or not your laptop could be updated?

Sprint doesn't even sell WPs anymore, hope DP allows me to see the new OS...

This is a great development. Now, maybe Daniel Rubino can give me a take on this, but if now we are getting Windows 10 as our phone OS which is the same platform that is being used on the desktop doesn't that make Windows Phones much more attractive to developers? I mean Microsoft can do a great marketing campaign by saying Windows 10 devices are the most popular around the world more than Apple iOS and Android. Just putting this out there...

Microsoft took months just declaring Lumia Denim(and still not available to old Lumia phones) and this is all together a New OS so guys be ready to wait for years before you get it installed in your W8 Phone ......

What Microsoft is doing , is being   the same model than apple does, i mean it was obvious that later of windows phone 8.1 would jump to 10, is not windows 9 so was obvious, and their policy of upgrade   devices is just very nice at least, about Windows 7,5-7.8 users,  just  could understand they got an  durable   thing , but they must have in mind that in Android also nobody give you an  upgrade to the next    version so   is not justified those rants. if look further there will found an article where Microsoft explains why they did not give an update to the windows 7.8 users to 8 ,

    Yes and no. Yes, I'm happy that Microsoft is confirming that ALL WP8 devices will get WP10. No, I'm not confident in any of the carriers making that update available to devices that are two to three years old. T-Mobile has already kicked the 810 to the curb and I haven't heard anything about the HTC 8S even though both devices are capable of getting the update. I feel like I'm saying this in every post now but Microsoft really needs to just bypass the carriers altogether ala Apple when releasing OS updates.

"Windows 10 upgrades"... Upgrades, and in plural. Wouldn't they have said Windows 10, period, if they meant all phones would be getting Windows 10? Sounds like a minor smokescreen, with older devices just getting some Windows 10 features...

Windows Phone 7 was bulit on Windows CE. Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 is built on Windows NT. Windows 10 will be NT to so a update process will be more easy.

I wonder what will be new in windows 10. I guess I can wait till then. I was about to jump ship to Android lollipop. Been with WP since win7 . Loved my titan back then but now years later im pretty tired of WP... Love my 1520 though.

All that matters is the features & the time the new OS is released especially when we have latest nexus or lollipop in place.

I'll play devil's advocate now. 1. The tweet did not mention the Nokia Lumia phones which are probably more than 90% of all WP 8 phones sold. Just saying the Lumias will get W10 is like saying all of the phones produced after poaching Nokia will get the update, the rest will not. 2. Product lifecycle. That fancy term which MS invented a while ago to explain why certain products are not maintained anymore. Would be a good way to not support the 1st gen WP8 phones, if they don't go the way described under 1.

Now that's what I call caring for customers. Windows 10 upgrade for every single device, from the dirt-cheap yet super efficient 520, to the flagship class behemoth 1520. Way to go Microsoft :) At the risk of sounding a bit over-excited, go suck on some nuts iFruits and LagDroids. PS: To my fellow Windows Phone (or Windows) using friends on Verizon, I feel your frustration. Just go contract free and kick those nutjobs to the curb already!

this is total crap what you are talking here about WP7 devices. There is NO valid reason why those were not upgradable!! The platform is the same ARM!, most of them have 512MB like the 520, the same resolution so don't start with excuses. MS simply did not want to do it! They were to lazy to adapt the WP8 OS to the old hardware components in respect of drivers. HTC HD7 and Lumia 900 were two great devices that users got tricked with when WP8 was released in the same period MS was still promoting these old devices! And to be frankly, the HD7 was a beauty comparing to the HTC 8X which is ugly as h***. So please stop this nonsense of a subject about the old WP7/7.5, everyone knows that it COULD have been possible to update those devices too as long as the specs are much the same with some wp8 devices except for the CPU which on WP7 was single core..but let's be serious, don't tell me because of a second core it was not possible LMFAO!!  Put it short, MS screw users up! and in this way they did more damage than good, faith in MS's platform faded away. Not only that WP7 was a total failure OS with lots of basic features missing (eg. USSD commands, BT was most of the time broken than working etc, no turn by turn offline GPS SW available etc) but it was updated to a 7.8 with a new homescreen and that was it...you call this respect to the customers? We all hope that Win10 will be available for current devices because if those idiots try to make the same mistake like they did with WP7 NON upgradable to WP8 thing, they will sure fail forever in gathering market share, users and developers...

That would be extremly cool of Microsoft but I highy doubt that'll happend due to hardware and firmware limitations. Let's wait and hope this predictions come true :)))

So right now why should anyone want to buy any new lumia phones out there as opposed to waiting for the WIndows 10 smart devices that will be coming soon. and I hope "future" is sooner than later

What I love about Microsoft is its commitment to making their OS so user friendly and to allow their hardware to work with it. My iPhone 4s is totally broken since 8.1 update. No battery time, reboots, no touchscreen working and apps no longer work. It is an expensive brick. The updates on my cheap 525 keep it running smoothly, no hiccups, no problems. I am abandoning Apple products for good. Cannot wait for Windows 10 on my mobile. Loving it on my laptop.

Would be helpful if they could narrow the date down. "[...] sometime in 2015." is not gonna help people with phones like a 920 which came out in Q3 2012 if MS releases the update in Q4 2015 (even mroe so if the update is bundled with the Lumia update which usually needs to be released by the carriers). I hate to sound negative every time I comment on such news but MS really needs to decrease update intervals and make the road map for them more transparent. I switched to Windows Phone because the update cycle on Android was only a sad joke. My HTC Magic is a neanderthal (version 1.5), my Galaxy S Plus is stuck on 2.3.6 and my Nexus S got 4.1.2 but the update was flawed (enormous battery drain) and didn't get fixed (yes I know, I could unlock and put a custom rom on them but I'm just not interested in that, I want it to work out of the box, not having to tinker around with it just to make it work).
While on WP the update cycle is much longer, the amount of updates is just....well, we're still on 8.1 with only mediocre improvements.

This is why MS is not really introducing any new WP devices.  They are waiting to release Windows 10 and then introduce new phones.  Which is smart, because why leave updating to the average person who can barely handle managing the settings on their phone.  You would be asking for trouble.
