2021 marks the 30-year anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, which means new announcements, ways to celebrate, and... collaborations with Minecraft? Mojang Studios has surprised the gaming world today with the announcement that the new Minecraft and Sonic the Hedgehog DLC is now available from the Minecraft Marketplace for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, built by Gamemode One. A Sonic-themed skin or texture pack would be one thing, but it looks like this DLC has taken things to the next level by simply making a compelling 3D Sonic game inside Minecraft.

Minecraft's Sonic the Hedgehog DLC is an infinite 3D runner and platformer using Minecraft's procedurally generated worlds (with a big Sonic-shaped twist, of course), and lets players take control of various Sonic characters like Sonic himself, Tails, Knuckles, and more. This is a full-blown Adventure Map, which means it does much more than simply change the appearance of the game, and actually alters gameplay and mechanics. Yes, you can even collect Sonic rings.

The Sonic the Hedgehog DLC for Minecraft might be a perfect expansion for players looking for a new experience in Minecraft, a new way to dive into the Sonic universe, or are already looking for something beyond Minecraft's Caves and Cliffs Update, which recently released 1.17 Part One.

Minecraft's Sonic the Hedgehog DLC is now available on every platform that Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is on, including Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PC, PS5, PS4, Switch, Android, and iOS. This is a paid DLC, so you'll have to buy it from the Minecraft Marketplace using Minecoins. It's always interesting to see creators like Gamemode One use Minecraft in new and interesting ways, and bring Sonic the Hedgehog into Minecraft is certainly a great example.

Minecraft is already one of the best Xbox games you can play. The inclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog might just make it even better.
