GDR2

Did you know that on your Nokia Windows Phone (since GDR2 and Amber) you're able to block unwanted contact from numbers through SMS and call filtering? It's a neat settings area, providing you with some power to prevent people from contacting you who you wish not to do so. Today, we've been alerted to a small update being pushed to the store.

Nokia's Lumia Black update (rolling out alongside the Update 3 from Microsoft) is still being loaded on hardware in numerous markets post-Nokia World, but should you reside in China, you're more than likely still waiting for the update to hit your Windows Phone. Today, we've got some good news for you. WPDang has learnt through sources that China will see the Lumia Black update from next Wednesday.

The wait is over.

Yesterday we reported that AT&T was planning on releasing the double punch Amber and Windows Phone 8 GDR2 OS update today. As predicted, the update has begun at 1 PM ET / 11 AM PT and users should now be able to head into their Settings > Phone Update > Check for updates to initiate the process. The update will bump the firmware to 1325 and the OS to version 10327.

Nokia and AT&T have been working on bringing the coveted updated for a few weeks now, coming in near last in terms of the global rollout. Nokia had previously stated that the Amber update should be completed by the end of September and while that was accurate for most users, those on AT&T had to sit by as T-Mobile and Verizon both beat them to the delivery.

File this one under hopeful, but AT&T via their support forums have confirmed that the Windows Phone 8 GDR2 OS update and accompanying Amber firmware from Nokia has been cleared for the Lumia 820 and 920.

ETA? Tomorrow, October 10th.

Now we should be clear that this isn’t an AT&T or Nokia press release and Nokia’s own webpage has not yet been updated to reflect this news (it still says ‘waiting for approval’). However, a Community Manager did post the information, and it seems too detailed and confident to just be a rumor. Indeed, the Community Manager is an employee of AT&T so it has some credibility to it.

The GDR2 update for Windows Phone starting rolling out for a lot of folks earlier this summer. And if you had a Lumia device you’d be getting the Amber update alongside it. Nokia also promised that their handsets would get both updates before the end of September. Depending on where you are, today is the end of September. So where’s the GDR2/Amber update for all those Lumia 920 customers on AT&T?

If you’re up in Canada and are rocking the super cool Lumia 520, get ready as Nokia and their carrier partners are in final checks for releasing the Amber/GDR2 update.

Looking at Nokia’s support page, we can see updates for the Lumia 520 on Chatr Wireless, Koodo, PC Mobile, Rogers and Telus have all switched from ‘Waiting for approval’ to ‘Coming soon’. That means last minute preparations and the updates should flow within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The HTC 8X is going through some bad times it would seem. The Windows Phone isn’t faring well with the latest GDR2 update from Microsoft. Vodafone AU has already skipped the update and is instead heading straight for GDR3, and it seems Telstra is also following suit. The mobile operator has revealed on its website that consumers will be able to look forward to a future rollout.

Good news for those with the super adorable Nokia Lumia 620 on O2 in the UK as we’re getting reports that the Lumia Amber update with the GDR2 OS is now rolling out. Likewise, two nights ago we teased that the Telus update was coming and it too is now live (Koodo is still pending approval).

Featuring the Glance screen, SMS and call filtering, camera fixes, flip to silence and more, the Amber update along with Microsoft GDR2 OS refresh should make the already fun Lumia 620 even better.

Good news for those with the awesome Nokia Lumia 720, as the 1334 Amber firmware and 10328 OS update (GDR2) is now sitting on Nokia’s servers.

If you're adventurous and use Nokia Care Suite or Navifirm+, you can download the ROM and manually flash your device (losing all information in the process); alternatively, you can wait until your carrier begins to roll it out over-the-air, which is what we recommend.

Those of you who are still eagerly awaiting the Amber / GDR2 rollout, we have some positive news for EE customers. The UK mobile operator took to Twitter today to reveal mid-September as to when Lumia Windows Phone owners can expect to see the updates shipped out on the network. Not long to go now, folks. EE is the last UK mobile operator to approve the software updates for the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820.

T-Mobile seems to be on a roll this week with updates. Earlier we saw the HTC 8X finally receive its GDR2 OS update along with new firmware and today, the Lumia 925 has received a minor OS bump from 10327 to 10328 along with new firmware, adjusting it from 1325 to 1330.

Since the Lumia 925 already shipped with Amber and GDR2 onboard, this update to 10328 is mostly related to carrier-related improvements and isolated bug fixes, though its exact contents are unclear at this time. Some users have reported some odd behavior on their 925’s, including occasional resets and even a “blue screen of death”, which is irrecoverable (we had this issue, though it seems very isolated). Also things like the soft keys not lighting up and Wi-Fi connectivity have been occasionally wonky, though overall, the Lumia 925 has been very reliable for our daily use.

HTC and T-Mobile have finally released the GDR2 OS and firmware update for the 8X Windows Phone. The information, posted on T-Mobile’s support forum, confirms the new OS as 10327 and Baseband 3030.0.33501.531. The update can be installed over-the-air, so long as the recipient is on Wi-Fi at the time due to the file size.

Windows Phone Central originally reported a planned rollout of GDR2 back in July and although HTC did have their support page up for that OS change, the update never materialized. Some users had complained that the 8X became more unstable after GDR2 and perhaps T-Mobile decided to do further testing before rolling it out to their customers.

Yesterday was a whirlwind day of news for Windows Phone and as such, a few items fell between the cracks. Sorry! But that’s what Thursday’s are for, evidently. So today we want to remind our friends up north in Canada who have an HTC 8X or HTC 8S that you should check for an OS and firmware update on your phone.

We received numerous tips from users noting that Bell Mobility and Rogers have both begun pushing out Windows Phone 8 1327 aka GDR2 OS updates along with the corresponding firmware to their 8X and 8S devices.

Last night we teased you with Verizon’s official changelog (PDF) for the HTC 8X software update, also known as GDR2 (for the OS) and accompanying new firmware.

At the time, we suggested that the update was imminent and sure enough, starting at 1PM ET it has gone live nationwide. That means if you head to your Settings and go under Phone Update, by utilizing the Check for update feature you can start the process (you’ll need to be on Wi-Fi).
