Lumia 925

Although AT&T users are finally having their day, T-Mobile is swooping in with another firmware update for their flagship (and Windows Phone Central favorite) Nokia Lumia 925.

By heading into Settings > Phone Update > Check for updates, users should now be greeted with a message about a new one being available. The update is strictly related to firmware and it will bump it from 1330 to 1336.

The Lumia 925 by Nokia is a premium Windows Phone, and is well loved here at Windows Phone Central. The device was last reported to be on the way to New Zealand on Vodafone, and today we can relay news that the Windows Phone is now available for purchase.

How much will it set you back? Absolutely nothing if you're going on contract, or $999 if you already have a Prepay or On Account plan.

Nokia has been playing with the wireless transfer of energy and mobile phones since the Lumia 920, which was the first Windows Phone to feature wireless charging - a cool concept that's incredibly useful in the field. But what if you could go one step further and charge your phone with lightning? Nokia has teamed up with the University of Southampton to achieve just that.

Windows Phone Central compares and contrasts today's top smartphone cameras

2013 so far can be described as the year of the camera phone. Between Nokia’s engineering and the likes of its competitors playing catch up, consumers have plenty of choice when it comes to smartphones with excellent cameras.

Following up our recent Lumia shoot out, we decided to take three of today's high end devices out for a showdown, specifically the brand new iPhone 5S, Lumia 925 (review) and Lumia 1020 (review). All three can be considered top contenders on paper, but we'll see who is the best when we dig deeper into the pixels.

Care to see our results? You may be surprised.

Mexico has become an increasingly strong market for Windows Phone broadly and Nokia specifically. In fact, latest sales estimations from Kantar Worldpanel show a monstrous 10.5% year over year sales increase, landing at 12.5% market share for recent sales.  Heck, they even have a Starbucks app.

With that in mind, it’s great to see the Nokia Lumia 925 finally getting ready to launch there.

There's little debate that Nokia has changed the way we look at our Windows Phone cameras. From the PureView technology to optical image stabilization (OIS) to making Zeiss a household name, Nokia has designed a healthy, quality assortment of cameras for their Lumia Windows Phones.

While the weather wasn't exactly agreeable all the time, we took the Nokia Lumia 1020, 925 and 920 out to see how these three cameras compared. All three are solid contenders to satisfy your smartphone photographic needs but is the Lumia 1020 the clear winner? The answer may surprise you.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 925 Review

The Nokia Lumia 925 is a fantastic Windows Phone that is now available at AT&T. We've shared our first impressions and unboxing of the Lumia 925 late last week and now we take a little closer look at the latest AT&T and Nokia offering.

The AT&T Nokia Lumia 925 is almost identical to the unlocked version and the T-Mobile variant that we've covered previously. However, AT&T is only offering the Lumia 925 in black and it works with AT&T's LTE network.  The Lumia 925 has made a very good first impression and the more we use it, the more the Lumia 925 grows on us.

Is it strong enough to push us away from the Lumia 1020? What about the Lumia 920? Maybe.... just maybe.

Yesterday, AT&T and Nokia released the slim and mostly-metal Lumia 925, bringing along with it one of the nation’s largest LTE networks at a $99 price point ($429 off contract). Today, we go hands on with the latest Nokia offering and come away impressed.

Featuring 16GB of internal storage (12GB available), a 4.5-inch AMOLED display with ClearBlack and an 8.7MP PureView camera with that extra lens-element for improved sharpness, there’s a lot to like about the Lumia 925. The phone is cool-to-the-touch due to the aluminum frame and it comes in elegant black (as opposed to T-Mobile’s brighter white offering). The OS is build 1328 (GDR2) and like other AT&T GDR2 devices, unfortunately lacks Data Sense.

Nokia’s Pro Cam is an excellent camera app for those who have access to it. Sure, time between shots could be decreased, but it’s still a solid app for camera enthusiasts wanting granular control of settings. It was first available for the Nokia Lumia 1020, but later became available for anyone with a Lumia 92x device. Unfortunately, a few days ago we had reports in the forums that users were unable to install the app. Today it looks like it’s fixed.

T-Mobile seems to be on a roll this week with updates. Earlier we saw the HTC 8X finally receive its GDR2 OS update along with new firmware and today, the Lumia 925 has received a minor OS bump from 10327 to 10328 along with new firmware, adjusting it from 1325 to 1330.

Since the Lumia 925 already shipped with Amber and GDR2 onboard, this update to 10328 is mostly related to carrier-related improvements and isolated bug fixes, though its exact contents are unclear at this time. Some users have reported some odd behavior on their 925’s, including occasional resets and even a “blue screen of death”, which is irrecoverable (we had this issue, though it seems very isolated). Also things like the soft keys not lighting up and Wi-Fi connectivity have been occasionally wonky, though overall, the Lumia 925 has been very reliable for our daily use.

Depending on who you ask around the Windows Phone Central water cooler the Lumia 925 might be their favorite phone. Compared to other Windows Phone devices, it’s very different, but in a good way. It’s sleek, aluminum body makes it a joy to pick up and use all the time. So far, it’s only been available in various markets around the globe. European markets picked it up first in early June, with the U.S. joining a month later in July. Since then it’s slowly been spreading around the globe. Soon, users in Latin America will be getting their hands on the aluminum Lumia.

Nokia has kept the camera in its Windows Phone at the forefront of its marketing campaign since joining Microsoft's resolve back in 2011. The Lumia 1020 is the latest addition to the Lumia family of smartphones and sports the most advanced optics on any mobile phone available today. We've already seen sample shots from both ourselves and Nokia, but what about general consumers? Nokia has highlighted some beautiful shots on their blog.

The Lumia 925 has had its priced dropped slightly in Russia. The premium Windows Phone launched last month and pre-ordering set one back by 24,990 rubles ($750). Today you'll be able to pick one up for 21,990 rubles ($660) with the choice of white, grey and black. If you've been holding off for that perfect opportunity, now's your chance to act.

Just in case you needed a little jolt to your memory, AT&T has now put up the all black Nokia Lumia 925 up for preorder today, with an anticipated ship date of September 11th. The device should be in stores on the 13th and if you preorder we bet a few of you will get the device a day early for some bragging rights.

The AT&T Nokia Lumia 925 will set you back $99 on contract, $21 a month with the Next upgrade program or a flat $429 off-contract. Featuring a 4.5” PureMotion HD+ AMOLED display, all black color scheme with an aluminum chassis and that 8.7MP PureView camera (with an added sixth lens element for increased sharpness), the Lumia 925 is one looker of a device. In fact while we gloat about the Lumia 1020’s photographic abilities, our Lumia 925 is constantly going with us too due to its fantastic design.

AT&T has announced that the Lumia 925 will indeed be launching on the mobile operator mid-September and it comes in a special black, including the back and metal. We recently looked at some rumoured dates provided by trusted sources, but now confirmation has been published in a public announcement. You heard it from us first: $99 is the price on contract and pre-orders kick off on August 28th.

Windows Phone Central has learned that AT&T is poised to grab the Nokia Lumia 925 and that it will be launching mid-September on the US carrier. The thin and sleek aluminum Lumia will reportedly be the black version and cost $99 on contract.  We have confirmed this information with two trusted sources.

The Nokia Lumia 920, currently sold on AT&T as an exclusive, will continue to be sold along the Lumia 925. However, its price should be dropping to $49 (from $99) on contract around the same time as the 925’s release (possibly even beforehand).
