Xbox 360 Companion App for Windows Phone 7 coming this winter [Video]

So day 2 here at Nokia World and we got to play around with the Xbox 360 Companion App for Windows Phone 7, featured here on a Nokia Lumia 710. The app is planned for "this winter" which is a little later than we were hoping and it also means what you're watching is still in beta.

Having said that it's pretty freakin' sweet. Think of it as an augmented remote. Sure it an control the Xbox for media, selecting movies and even using a virutal D-pad. But more importantly, it pulls down data about shows or moves you're watching, gives you general information and allows you to browse on the phone instead of the Xbox itself.

While not hologram material, it's certainly headed down the right road by providing deeper integration between the Xbox and Windows Phone and we know we'll be itching to get our hands on this ASAP.

  • First thing I'm going to do when I get this is search for Fast Five.
  • As an Xbox and WP7 owner I want to like this, but I just don't see much use for it. Hopefully they have something more intriguing in mind, but I can't imagine what it would be.But to be frank, remote control, Bing search, and actor filmography are just not very compelling features for me.Am I the only one who feels this way?
  • Baby steps.I have both and yes, I don't care either way if i have it or not until something interesting comes out.
  • i hate using the xbox controller to navigate play and pause and was very close to buying an actual dvd remote for xbox. now i dont have to. I'll definitely find this app useful.
  • Well what more would you like it to do?But they did say that its a start and it would be getting more and more features in the future.I like the idea of using it as a Remote Control, as i don't own a remote for my Xbox, and i don't really like using the controller.Yes i can use voice commands with my kinect to pause etc, but with the phone app being able to take things a little further with cast searches etc is a nice feature.
  • I'm often on my phone at the same time as watching a film or tv show on my Xbox. Having the ability to pop open an app and hit pause or rewind will be great, as finding my controller in the dark and then waiting for my controller to turn on takes ages and usually means I miss a few seconds of my show.I'm throughly looking forward to this app. Good job MS, keep 'em coming!
  • Valid point, I didnt even consider this point. I have my nose in my phone at all times, at least this way I am not missing the whole movie experience! lol
  • I see where you're coming from, but I do disagree. I am pretty excited having used Pocket Blu (on my previous phone (Android)) with my PS3, Xbox Companion is a much more intuitive software. The real reason to be excited however, is this is the first step towards total console-phone integration. I now own a WP7 device, and am a long time Xbox user (since '02), and cant wait to bring my two favorite devices together.
  • Quick and easy signing in to your GamerTag. That's all I want.
  • The reason I am really, really looking forward to this app is that I don't have a keyboard for my Xbox controller. I know that you can buy one, but I'm cheap and I already own a Windows Phone. Other than that, I think the controller is pretty sufficient.
  • or just use a standard USB keyboard?
  • I would like to know if that all works for Zune movies and songs only or for DVDs or even streams via MediaCenter as well. On top of that I'd like to know if the phone and the XBox need to be in the same network. I remember reading somewhere that this isn't necessary since this all is supposed to be managed over the live ID. But I can't really imagine how this is gonna work, since all those remote controls would lag as **** then.
  • You know what I want? I want it to do WOL so I can buy stuff off the Marketplace and have it already downloaded by the time I get home.
  • As far as I've heard in previous articles this is possible with the xbox companion app.
  • I actually like this because I hate digging around for my remote. Are the batteries dead? I have kids and they lose it and they steal the batteries, etc. So I much prefer using my kinect to control Xbox. Having this will give me another option that doesn't require my controller. I will be using this a lot. :)
  • They REALLY need to integrate some type of Airplay functionality out of this. Would be easy for them to do and make it far more useful.
  • I like that they used Fast Five, as I had to do this type of searching when I was watching it! Lol Couldn't figure out who the Asian guy was or what movie he was from, this would've been WAY more convenient. Guess I am the target audience...
  • Apple requires apple tv if people want to "mirror" or play stuff from their iphone/ipad onto their TVs. MS can easily do the same by using xbox as a way play stuff on the TV. Why hasn't microsoft done this?? millions of people have xbox in their houses already, it's not like windows phone owners have to go buy a new box or something.
  • She sounds cute (:
  • God, that woman voice's is annoying!
  • She also pronounces "Nokia" weird.
