What you need to know

  • Age of Wonders: Planetfall is an upcoming strategy game from Triumph Studios.
  • The team is known for the Overlord franchise.
  • The game runs at 4K resolution on Xbox One X according to the Microsoft Store.
  • You can preorder it for $50 on Amazon.

Updated August 1, 2019: Age of Wonders: Planetfall features Favor Resolution and Favor Performance modes on Xbox One X. This means that you either choose a resolution close to or at 4K, but with some perfomrance issues, or play at possible 1080p but with a locked 60 frames per second frame rate.

Many months ago, Paradox Interactive — the publisher behind games like Cities: Skylines and Surviving Mars — announced Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is a new strategy game from Triumph Studios, the team behind critically-acclaimed experiences like Overlord.

You start the game completely down and out. According to the publisher, the title should bring turn-based empire building and tactical combat to a new setting. You emerge from the dark age of a fallen galactic empire to craft a new future for your people. While exploring planetary ruins and encountering other factions that have each evolved in their own way, you'll unravel the history of a shattered race.

As with any major "AAA" game nowadays, gamers want to know how it looks and runs on consoles. Contrary to rumors, Age of Wonders: Planetfall appears to be Xbox One X Enhanced because the Microsoft Store listing reveals that it runs at 4K resolution on the system. It's unclear what the frame rate is at the moment.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall went up for digital preorder on Xbox One a few weeks ago and is expected to launch on August 6. There are a few versions available for preorder, but the base experience only costs $50. However, if you want the season pass and other in-game boosts, you'll have to pay more.
