What you need to know

  • The Bard's Tale is an acclaimed franchise that is regarded as one of the godfathers of the role-playing genre.
  • Wasteland brought the post-apocalypse to role-playing games decades ago.
  • According to Microsoft, both experiences are getting remastered and coming to Xbox One and PC as part of Xbox Game Pass.
  • You can purchase Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on Amazon (opens in new tab).

A few days ago, Microsoft accidentally revealed that The Bard's Tale Trilogy was coming to Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One and PC in August. The franchise offered gamers plenty of choices. Not only are The Bard's Tale: Tales of the Unknown, The Bard's Tale II: The Destiny Knight, and The Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate considered cult classics, but they also helped to formulate a genre we love.

However, that wasn't the complete story. Today, in a post on Xbox Wire (opens in new tab), Microsoft confirmed that the original post-apocalyptic role-playing game — Wasteland: 30th Anniversary Edition — is coming to Xbox One and PC later this year. It'll also be available through Xbox Game Pass.

The company said Wasteland: 30th Anniversary Edition is a remaster of the classic game that brought the post-apocalypse to role-playing games. For fans eagerly awaiting Wasteland 3, it'll be the perfect opportunity to see where the story of the Desert Rangers all began.

The fact that The Bard's Tale Trilogy and Wasteland: 30th Anniversary Edition are coming to Xbox One and PC is due to the fact that developer inXile Entertainment is now a part of Xbox Game Studios. Hopefully, more of their past projects will end up on the console, too.

There are a few ways to purchase Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One and PC. While you can get individual subscriptions for $10 a month, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bundles Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass on PC, and Xbox Live Gold into one package for $15 a month.

  • That's so awesome. I used to play both The Bard's Tale and Wasteland on the Commodore 64 back in the 80's. These games were way ahead of their time!
  • I don't understand why more of the back catalog of games owned by the studios Microsoft acquired last year aren't also on Game Pass now. For example, Contrast by Compulsion Games and quite a few games from Double Fine too.
  • Wasteland - 30th Anniversary Edition remaster was originally scheduled for Jan/Feb 2019 and was originally to be part of a Steam Bundle. These guys are so behind on everything, good thing Microsoft is stepping in.
