Rockstar reveals Red Dead Redemption 2 for Xbox One, trailer coming on October 20

Red Dead Redemption was one of the biggest games of the Xbox 360 era, taking place in an unprecedented open world which continues to influence modern open world titles even today. Rockstar Games, known primarily for Grand Theft Auto, are targeting a Fall 2017 launch for Red Dead Redemption 2 on both Xbox One and PS4.

After a couple of days of teaser images, the studio has now revealed that a trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 will go live in two days time on October 20th at 11 AM EST.

From the description on the game's website, it looks like Red Dead Redemption 2 will not only feature Rockstar's signature open-world campaign treatment but also deploy what they have learned in the multiplayer space with Grand Theft Auto Online. The website features logos for Xbox and PlayStation but gives no indication of a Windows PC version.

"Developed by the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an epic tale of life in America's unforgiving heartland. The game's vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience."

The title "Red Dead Redemption 2" was apparently leaked by a former Rockstar developer almost a year ago, in addition to the game's map, which appears to sit next to locations from the previous game. The rumored map doesn't feature the last game's railroads and also interestingly features "New Bordeaux," which is the fictional city for another Take Two-owned open-world crime fantasy, Mafia III.

Whether the previous rumors pan out or not remains to be seen, but either way, I'm already confident enough to suggest that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be one of 2017's biggest titles.

  • "suggest that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be one of 2017's biggest titles" I reckon it will be delayed until spring 2018 to boost numbers for Take 2's next fiscal year. Also it will be released as a current gen title not utilizing the power of the PS4Pro/Scorpio - something for which a paid update will be released later, when current gen sales slow down.
  • I don't think they'd delay for any reason other than they weren't happy with it, if they wanted to boost those numbers in 2018... they'd announce it for 2018, lol. It'll be interesting to see whether they'll do the "paid upgrade" thing for Scorpio/PS4 Pro, I for one hope we don't end up going down that rabbit hole.
  • It's happened it the past though (even though Take2 obviously claimed it was strictly due to technical difficulties with the Xbox 360 and PS3). I hope I'm wrong, but I'm willing to put some money down on this all happening to at least some degree.
  • Ah well, whether it comes out in 2017 or 18, it's a safe bet that it'll be great.
  • It is always for development issues, not to bump numbers. I worked there for 9.5 years.
  • Thank you for supporting some of the best games made.
  • I can assure you Take2 doesn't need to boost numbers... They're the richest game development company that exists and releases record breakers' every single time.
  • It has to run on this Gen hardware, that's a requirement.
  • Yeah, hence they will release a current gen title now, followed by an upgraded game later. The new one will take part of some next gen specific feature to get around the limitation.
  • Maybe, but I'm wondering how developers in general will offer games to two different levels of hardware. Perhaps the plan is to sell discs with the data for the full 4K, super-duper version and a standard Xbox One would only read and display what it could? That way when discs are moved into Scorpio, the machine then 'unlocks' the full amount to deliver. I don't know about these kind of things so may be impractical?
  • Well if we're strictly talking about publishing on Microsoft platforms we can assume they'll leverage UWP apps with scalable graphics like exists on the PC. That'll enable them to develop it once and publish it to Xbox One, Project Scorpio, and Windows 10 all at once. Presumably with the settings locked at specific graphics levels for the Xbox One and Scorpio. No idea how they'll tackle it for Sony.
  • I'm pretty sure during development they can scale up/down settings and the games essentially ship with fixed values - Obviously they don't ship with 4K textures etc. now but I'd imagine it's trivial being based on x86 and with it having been done this way on PC for ages
  • Don't forget they've been doing this on PC for forever....It's supposedly easier than ever to scale graphical settings so it should essentially be the same as PC but with specific, automatically selected presets rather than full control as on PC.
  • Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
  • Wish there are no supernatural glitches again.
  • CAN'T WAIT!!!
  • I hope they keep or have some kind of Single Player story. I feel like in the next GTA, they will get rid of that. I don't have friends that play games so playing multi-player kind of sucks.
  • If it doesn't have a single player campaign I won't buy it. I like having a story in my games.
  • I think I'll be in the same boat.  Multi-Player kind of takes some of the fun out of GTA with people leaving your heists and waiting on people to join constantly.
  • I'm not saying mp is not welcome cause I loved the co-op missions in rdr but the running around killing people for the sake of killing got old very quickly for me. I would have liked the idea of forming a hunting party with a few friends and hunting together. I have nothing against mp, it is just that I am more of a co-op person.
  • Definetly agree with that.  Multi-Player is and can still be fun, but it can be frustrating at the same time.  At least when I've used it.  And like I said, my friends don't play Xbox or any other games anymore.  Might be a whole different experience if you have friends online.
  • I use to live out in the boonies myself, I know exactly what you mean. Farm work is brutal and the days never end. There is always something that needs done.
  • It'll have single player rdr did don't see why it wouldn't. Plus all the extras you could do. Would be a big mistake if they changed the format of the game since rdr was a big success.
  • For the trolls: Try to play this game on an iOS, Android, or a Chromebook/Mac. Edit: My bad it's probably not coming to PC either.
  • I feel like you're the only one trolling.
  • Really. Wtf does that have to do with the game?
  • Nice.  I just replayed Red Dead Revolver on the og Xbox...good timing for me to play Red Dead Redemption and continue the story.
  • I've never played the first, but I'm pretty excited about this game.
  • You are missing a great game.
  • Could you please stop using "Xbox One" in the headlines when writing about non exclusive games ? Why do I need to click on the article or go to another site just to check if it's exclusive or not ? Is there a reason not to write "Rockstar reveals Red Dead Redemption 2 for Consoles, trailer coming on October 20th" ? (Please don't go with "It's Windows Central not Gaming/Sony Central"). It's just misleading headline.
  • We don't cover PlayStation and we know it's coming to Xbox One. So far no-one has said anything about PC.
  • I know you don't cover ps but writing in the headlines only Xbox assumes that it is exclusive. so just like he said, why not just write consoles or next gen consoles instead of just Xbox one. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • You can bet that a PlayStation site will be using PS4 in the headline.
  • And it will be equally annoying.
  • If you don't know it's multiplat then you're clueless. Seems like you're complaining just to complain.
  • 1. I wonder if they'll drop half the dev team after they make a ton if money off this title as well?
    2. It will be delayed, because when it's near finished, some producer or owner will come out of their cocaine induced haze just Long enough to realize he doesn't like ANYTHING and wants it all changed.
    3. They can go f themselves
  • Yeah we heard your same gripe on yesterdays post, will this continue until release or will you look for a new job?
  • Cocaine does that to people.lol
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 ? Really why not just Red Dead 3. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android (LG V10 or Nexus 5x)
  • Because it might be a direct sequel to RDR?
  • It's said to be a prequel, which makes the name even more moronic.
  • Red Dead Redemption was such I stand out title that I think Red Dead Redemption 2 is more then fitting especially if it is a prequel.
  • Still makes little sense to call it 2. They should have a subtitle behind the name to indicate that it is a prequel. Without reading on it, I personally thought it was going to follow the son.
  • I have to finish the game!!!! I'm not done with part 1. I didn't get to play red dead revolver. Lol Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • This is awesome. Love me some GTA and other Rockstar titles.
  • Just in time for Scorpio. The stars have aligned. Marketing deal with Red Dead Redemption 2 and Scorpio bundle incoming. Mark my words.
