ESPNcricinfo: For those who like a good game of cricket

ESPNcricinfo is a Windows Phone sports app to keep you up to date on all the cricket action going on around the world. Cricket the game, not cricket as in Jiminy Cricket.

ESPNcricinfo covers international matches, ICC tournaments and major domestic leagues including English county championships, Indian Premier League and Champions League. The app is laid out nicely, as with any ESPN app, with pages covering match scores, news, magazine articles, and a tile menu that pulls up stats, videos, settings, rankings and more.

Other features for ESPNcricinfo include:

  • Live game coverage that includes commentary, scores, match graphics, player profiles, and sideline reports
  • "Lean Back" mode for full-screen viewing that allows you to lean back and enjoy the match
  • Live tile support to pin games to your Start Screen
  • Push notifications for instant alerts for wickets, batsman milestones, and score updates..

While the game of cricket isn't very prominent in my neck of the woods, I can see ESPNcricinfo being a handy app to have for those who follow the game. ESPNcricinfo is a free app for your Windows Phone and you can snatch it up here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Thanks, bilzkh, for the tip!

Windows Phone App Review: Baseball Live

As summer moves into full swing, so does the Major League Baseball season. To help you keep track of things, you have the Windows Phone app Baseball Live.

The main pages for Baseball Live cover news, scores, team standings, a more page that will send you to a stats page, ESPN videos page, MLB videos page, ESPN's MLB Tweets, MLB Tweets and the app's settings.

The nice thing about Baseball Live is there are very few redirects to external sites. All the information is pulled into Baseball Live avoiding the need to bounce between the app and Internet Explorer. You will need to go to your YouTube Windows Phone app to view videos and the Twitter Windows Phone app for the tweets but news items, stats, and scores are all pulled into Baseball Live.

Other features for Baseball Live include:

  • Ability to share a news article through email, Facebook or Twitter
  • Live scoreboard of current games
  • Live Game details including box scores and detailed play information
  • Ability to create a secondary tile for your favorite team
  • Team Information including schedule and roster information
  • Ability to set your favorite team which will create a unique app landing page unique to your team

When you're viewing the game details and need to update the score, simply shake your Windows Phone.

All in all, Baseball Live is a comprehensive source for all your Major League Baseball news, stats, and scores. Baseball Live is a free, ad supported app for your Windows Phone that you can snag here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

  • Free customizable push alerts (including goals and key incidents)
  • Daily video “vodcasts” featuring special guests
  • Sync tournament fixtures to your calendar
  • Up-to-the-second live scores
  • Live blogs or text commentary for EVERY game
  • Comprehensive list of match times, tables and statistics
  • The latest Euro 2012 news, previews and post-match analysis in video format
  • “Bet Now” feature, allowing UK-based users to place real-time bets via licensed betting and gaming provider William Hill

The football leagues covered includes UEFA Champions League, English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, Argentine Primera Division, French Ligue 1 and many more. You can even get coverage on the 2012 Olympic soccer matches.

ScoreMobile FC is laid out very similar to the original ScoreMobile with pages covering your teams, your comps, access to all leagues, a listing of top matches. With Euro 2012 and the Olympics right around the corner, ScoreMobile FC is a good way to keep up with all your soccer...err... football scores from your Windows Phone.

Update: While the initial release on ScoreMobile FC did not make the distinction, we have since learned that push notifications are not currently supported for the Windows Phone version of this app.

ScoreMobile FC is a free, ad supported app that you can find here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

ESPN app for Nokia Lumias gets updated with new Live Tile support for latest scores

Although Nokia's ESPN app available in the Nokia Collection gets some mixed reviews partially because it relies on Internet Explorer for some advanced stats, overall fans seem to like the co-branded offering.

One feature that was missing however was a Live Tile for sports score updates and now that has been addressed with version 2.1. The new update came out in the last 24-hours and users seem to be quite happy so far with the ability to just glance-and-go with the app on their Start screen.

No other tweaks or fixes are known with version 2.1 but needless to say, if you follow sports, like ESPN and love your Lumia than you'll want to grab this app ASAP. Pick it up here in the Windows Phone Marketplace but only if you're on Nokia.

NBA Game Time Lite adds League Pass support

Just in time for the playoffs, NBA Game Time Lite has been updated to add support for your NBA League Pass that will allow you to watch games live from your Windows Phone.

Should you not have a League Pass, NBA Game Time Lite will still bring you all the scores, highlights, schedules and standings for the 2011-2012 NBA Season. The app is nicely laid out with scores and schedules of today's games greeting you as you launch the app. Swiping to the right of the today's games listing, you can view video highlights, standings, and the "more" page that has settings, league pass sign in, links to the NBA store and more.

From list of today's games, tap on a game and you'll be able to check out the game's box score, play by play details, team stats, player stats, and a game preview. If the game is available through the League Pass, you'll have a button bar at the bottom of the box score page to launch the video.  Plus the game will be highlighed on the today's game page.

There is also game alerts available through the alert button control at the bottom of the individual game screens and you can surf the calendar by tapping the little calendar button at the bottom of NBA Game Time Lite's main page.

NBA Game Time Lite is a free app for your Windows Phone and the NBA League Pass starts at $16.99. You find NBA Game Time Lite here at the Windows Phone Marketplace and information on the League Pass here at

MLB at Bat 2012 takes the field over at the Windows Phone Marketplace

MLB at Bat 2012 has finally reached the Windows Phone Marketplace to bring all the stats, scores, and action of the 2012 Major League Baseball season to your Windows Phone. Officially titled "At Bat 12" in the Marketplace the MLB app picks up where MLB at Bat 11 left off.  You can tag up to three MLB teams as favorites so you can easily follow all the action from starting pitch to the final out.  At Bat 12 lays everything out really nicely.

The overall appearance has also received a face lift with a lighter appearance to the app which makes it look better.  Key features include:

  • Add a favorite team panorama
  • Pin your favorite team to the Homescreen
  • Home and away live radio broadcasts
  • Gameday pitch-by-pitch tracker
  • In-progress video highlights
  • Condensed Games and video highlight library
  • Breaking news, schedules, standings, rosters and player statistics

At Bat 12 is running $14.99 and many will cry foul that there isn't a trial version available.  However, At Bat 12 delivers a ton of information to your Windows Phone and is well worth the fifteen buck price tag.

But I agree, it would be nice to have a way to try before you invest in At Bat 12 or opt for a scaled down, lite version.  You can find At Bat 12 here at the Windows Phone Marketplace and again, it's running $14.99.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips!

Xbox Live: PES 2012 runs onto the field ahead of schedule for Windows Phone

Last week Gerbil Physics went up on the Marketplace a bit early, and it’s happened again this week. Somebody at the big MS is on the ball! Anyway, you can now buy this week’s Xbox Live release, Pro Evolution Soccer 2012.

What’s new in PES 2012? Well, you can’t tell from the official description, which sounds just about identical. Here it is:

  • Unrivalled realism: Experience incredible gameplay and focus on tactics, goals and winning trophies while competing against the most advanced team and player AI on the market. Striking animations such as referee cut-scenes or goal celebrations and technical moves (diving header, bicycle kick, and more) will make you feel the beauty of the game.
  • Exclusive UEFA Club Competitions: PES 2012 includes many of the best European club teams in the officially licensed UEFA Champions League™ and UEFA Europa League™ modes.
  • Online connectivity: Prove your skills and unlock the various Xbox LIVE achievements, compare yourself to your friends, make it to the top of the leaderboards and become the world’s greatest PES player.
  • Outstanding Accessibility for Beginners and Experts: The uniquely designed true flow™ control system provides instant access for players of all levels by utilising the accelerometer and AI-supported touch controls. More advanced players are presented with unlimited freedom of play by being able to master classic console-style controls with virtual pad and buttons.
  • Stunning graphics: Detailed stadiums, pitches and weather effects provide the perfect visual environment for exciting matches
  • Avatar awards: These aren't listed in the official description, but we have it on good authority that they're coming in the near future.

Hmm... One of those bullet points doesn't add up. Having played both PES 2011 on Windows Phone and PES 2012 on Xbox 360, I can tell you without a doubt that this series is not accessible for beginners. It’s an extremely realistic and challenging depiction of soccer, which is great for people who’ve been playing it for years. Me, I just couldn’t get overcome the learning curve. You might also consider that the PES 2011 was delisted from the Marketplace without warning, which will likely happen to 2012 once next year’s version gets closer to release. Hopefully Microsoft starts allowing users to back up or redownload delisted games between now and then, but I’m not holding my breath.

Enough commentary! Football/soccer fans who want to play their sport on Windows Phone can’t do any better than Pro Evolution Soccer, and that’s what matters. PES 2012 costs $4.99 and there is a free trial. Get it here on the Marketplace.

Thanks to Natres for the tip!

Nokia releases official Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Sports App for Windows Phone

Great news if you're on a Nokia Windows Phone and happen to like sports, specifically basketball this time of year with March Madness afoot. Nokia has evidently teamed up with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) group to make an official app for their phones. The app snuck onto the Marketplace on the 28th and we just found it accidently. As you'd expect from Nokia, the app is top notch and well polished:

"The ACC Sports App is the official mobile source for the Atlantic Coast Conference sports on your Windows Phone. Watch Live ACC Network coverage of the 2012 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament on your Windows Phone for FREE from March 8th-11th. Get other basketball and football game details such as play-by-play, schedules, standings, stats and more from your favorite ACC team. Don't miss any of the action with interactive scoreboards, ACC news feeds and schedules. The ACC Sports App also includes the latest insider video coverage including the daily video updates and highlights of all conference basketball and football games!"

Like we said, it's a nice app and we no reason why you would not get this if you're into those teams. Pick it up here in the Marketplace for free (only via your Nokia phone as the web Marketplace won't show it).

The All Blacks take down a flying Lumia 800 recording the team [Video]

The All Blacks, New Zealand's national rugby team, were being recorded by a hovering Lumia 800 Windows Phone when they took it down with an accurate throw. Not too sure what the video is supposed to be promoting, apart from the phone being relatively sturdy and being able to record while flying through a training ground, but it's a laugh nonetheless.

One of the most popular apps on Nokia's previous mobile operating systems is making its way to the Lumia 710 and 800 tomorrow all devices, now. Sports Tracker is an application designed to help users log their physical activity, as well as share it via social networks.  The development team who originally designed it has decided to bring it to Nokia's newest platform of choice, Windows Phone.  Ykä Huhtala, one of the developers of Sports Tracker, said of the decision:

“Windows Phone is a very competitive platform for mobile development especially if you have any previous experience in developing with Microsoft’s tools.  The same tools can be used in developing for mobile devices and it’s extremely easy and fast to get up to speed in developing apps.”

NFL Live Tile - Mango App Spotlight

NFL Live Tile is a novelty app that just hit the Windows Phone Marketplace. It is a Mango app, so you'll need your Windows Phone updated, and allows you to display a little team pride on your Start Screen.

NFL Live Tile creates a tile on your Start Screen designed around your favorite NFL team logo. The tile is "live" in the it is double sided and flips every few seconds. You do have the ability to add text to the either side of the tile (e.g. Go Team, Packers Rule, Falcons Rule, etc).

It would be nice if the tile would update with your team's scores or display the next game on the schedule automatically. Another thing to remember about NFL Live Tile is that it won't save your text within the app. If you launch the app after creating a tile, the text fields will be blank. If you enter new text, you'll need to make sure your team logo is selected or you'll get a blank tile.

While NFL Live Tile feels like a work in progress, if you're looking for a way to add a little team spirit to your Start Screen, NFL Live Tile is worth a gander. It's a free app and if you're running Mango you can download it here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Pro Evolution Soccer is the Xbox Live Deal of the Week. Goal!!!!

Sports fans who haven’t bought Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 (the only sports title on Xbox Live so far) for some reason are in for a treat this week. Konami’s premiere soccer game is the Xbox Live Deal of the Week at $2.99!

PES 2011 is a surprisingly accurate recreation of the sport, with realistic tactical game play, licensed European teams, advanced A.I. and numerous authentic animations. Can you kick a soccer ball into some guy’s junk if you want? Not quite that realistic, but I digress.

Pro Evolution Soccer’s 3D graphics contribute to the realism as well. The player models, detailed stadiums, and weather effects all make for a very console-like presentation. The game features multiple control options: simple accelerometer and touch-screen controls or a virtual pad and buttons. It’s also got some very grindy Achievements, so prepare to be in it for the long haul if you want the full 200 GamerScore.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is on sale for $2.99 (down from $4.99) for one week only. Get it here (Zune link) on the Marketplace, football fans!

(Yes, this does mark the second of Konami’s three Xbox Live games to go on sale. We’re that much closer to a Castlevania Puzzle deal!) at Bat 11 - Quick Take
