Although Windows Phone 8 is nearly one year old, the promise of numerous VOIP apps is still not quite a reality. Yesterday though, Nimbuzz, an old school messaging service, finally delivered on free voice calls for their Windows Phone app.

Version 1.1.4.0 is now live in the Store for Windows Phone 8 devices. Free voice calls (with your Nimbuzz contacts) and bug fixes are the two features on order.

The client has been bumped to version 3.1. The release itself is quite a large one, packing a completely redesigned UI and more. Head on past the break for the details.

The platform is most popular in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and India boasting over 300 million users spread around the globe. The company started in China, but has recently been working hard to expand its international membership using brand ambassadors like Lionel Messi. The latest update for Windows Phone helps close the feature gap compared to Android and iOS. Let’s check it out.

Viber, the messaging app that lets you text, group message, and make free HD calls, just got updated to version 2.3 for Windows Phone 8. The desktop application for Windows was also updated, allowing it to better integrate with Windows Phone.

Talmon Marco, Viber's CEO, spoke of the company's latest move:

We have focused on bringing Viber to multiple platforms, ensuring our users can communicate freely with as many of their friends as possible. Today we are very happy to bring important updates to two of those platforms, ensuring full compatibility between the Windows Phone and Desktop versions of Viber.

"Are you ready to start Voxing on your Windows Phone?" That's what the public announcement on the Voxer support forum reads, which details a beta program for the Windows Phone platform. Good news for those who are eagerly awaiting the service to support Microsoft's mobile platform. So how does one get involved with the company to test out its product?

Vox Communications is planning to support Windows Phone with its mobile VoIP service. The company currently supports Android, but it has since revealed that plans are set to launch versions on other platforms in the future. The first platform to receive such blessing will be iOS, but we are likely to see BlackBerry and Windows Phone on the horizon thereafter.

Some mixed news for Viber users on Windows Phone. Although we were recently blessed with a fully-functional Windows Phone 8 “HD” version of the increasing popular VOIP app, we’re still lagging a bit behind our Android and iOS brethren in terms of features and release cycles.

Version 3.0 for Apple and Google devices went live today, bringing new features including more languages, video messages, online status, “last online” feature that shows how long your contact has been offline, brand new stickers, improved UI with an “enhanced photo experience,” and a few other changes.

Most notably, version 2.2.2.0 adds free calling with HD sound quality, but it also adds Live Tile support. You can now pin conversations to the Start screen and receive lockscreen notifications.

Viber for Windows Phone 8 is still on the way, but we're now almost there. According to TruTower, the Viber team has submitted the app to the Windows Phone Store and expects it to be available in the next few days. We previously looked at CEO Talmon Marco confirming that Viber is indeed coming soon to Windows Phone, and now the same soul has revealed that the app has indeed been submitted.

The Viber team has revealed on Twitter that an update is well on the way for Windows Phone, which is speculated to bring VOIP support. The app is currently only enabling consumers to communicate with contacts via messages, leaving alternatives as solutions for VOIP. So when can we all expect to see said update delivered to Windows Phones? It's "coming very soon."

Microsoft is due to demonstrate integration between Skype and Lync next week at its Lync Conference held in San Diego.

The integration will give Skype and Lync users that ability to contact each other, launch IM text sessions and communicate via audio calls. The integration should be delivered to customers in June with video conferencing integration coming later.

It has been a long, long time since the Microsoft crowd heard from Fring – a relatively popular VOIP/IM app for iOS, Android and Windows Mobile back in the day. It was back in October of 2012 that we got word they had no plans to support Windows Phone 7 due to the lack of camera access. Since then the access developers have to the camera with Windows Phone 8 has changed dramatically and Fring is coming back!

We reported on the demise of Microsoft’s long serving Messenger instant chat and video calling service some time back. If you are already an existing user then you’ll have been greeted with pop up notices urging you to update to Skype over the last month or so.

Seems like Microsoft is now putting the word out in full, an official email was sent to users today explaining what you’ll need to do and how long the service will continue to work for.
