Windows 10 Mobile preview build 10586 now available for Fast Ring Windows Insiders

Microsoft has just released a new preview version of Windows 10 Mobile, with the build number 10586 , to the members of the Windows Insider Program who have signed up to get updates in the Fast ring. This build is the current one shipping on the new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL as well making it rather polished.

What's Fixed

  • We have fixed the issue that caused the Start experience to become corrupted (garbled) after upgrading and restoring a backup from a phone that had a different resolution.
  • You should now be able to set your default save locations via Settings > System > Storage and it will correctly reflect the current storage settings. Your SD card should no longer show up as a garbled name in Storage settings either.
  • Moving apps to a SD card should no longer cause those apps to crash.
  • We've made improvements to the Messaging + Skype app – through both app updates via the Store and also on the server side.
  • This should be seeing less resuming/loading text when switching apps.
  • The physical camera button should be working again if it wasn't working for you before.
  • Apps and games should download from the Store more reliably.

Known issues

  • After we released Build 10581 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring, we discovered a bug in the build that will cause the filesystem to become partially corrupted after doing a factory reset. For those of you who did a factory reset of your phone, you most likely did not notice this issue on Build 10581. Due to this bug however, upgrading to Build 10586 will cause your phone to go into a reboot loop after the upgrade completes – rebooting at the Windows or operator logo. To recover your phone, you can use the hardware key combination to reset your phone which will then put it at the OOBE experience on Build 10586. We highly recommend that you make sure you do a backup your phone before upgrading to Build 10586 due to this bug. Additionally, you can also recover your phone by using the Windows Device Recovery Tool to go back to Windows Phone 8.1 and then upgrade to Build 10586.
  • Deploying Silverlight apps through Visual Studio to your phone still won't work in this build. This issue will be fixed with the release of Visual Studio 2015 Update 1 on Nov. 30th. You can deploy UWP apps to your phone without any issues.
  • There is a known issue where the tile for Insider Hub still remains under All apps but doesn't open. Insider Hub isn't included in this build. There isn't a way to get it back unfortunately. However, it'll return in a future flight! In the meantime, use Insider Hub on the PC as a workaround.

  • Whoooo
  • The first part of known issues gets my attention... I'm not rushing this time.. :-/
  • My thoughts exactly.
  • I can't remember if I did a hard reset.... Now I'm just sitting here, thinking about it...
  • would you have done a hard reset anyway? if thats the case, then the biggest deal about that bug is losing data, go for it!
  • If you did not do restart you be fine. And if you did you can go back 8.1 than update to 10586
  • I had not done a hard reset , so it went pretty well, i'd say you stick to the 10581, i ve seen more crashes on messaging app and store in 24 hours than i had with 10581 since install
  • YES .......... nothing seems improved
  • Seriously... i'm having the same problem.. Messaging app crashes a lot and says "resuming.." a lot and sometimes i don't get a notification for texts.
  • Just installed Messaging &Skype app update... Seems to have resolved the crashing issue.
  • Thats why i am no longer an insider, i rather play it safe
  • Any thing new in this build?
  • Version number... :D
Why don't you spend some time reading the article first.. ;)
  • I have no time, (exams):D
  • Still you are on WC ... All the best for exams :p
  • Thanks :)
  • Yet you have time to comment here and then read the reply? Does not compute.
  • also has time to run a beta phone OS when the goal is to provide feedback to make it better. I bet the phrase "i have an unreleased version" is said.
  • is lumia 620 eligible for this preview
  • I guess not.
  • Yes, it is
  • Yas U Need to downlod windows insider app to Windows store and sign in and chose fast ring and restart phone then chek for update and downlod and install
  • I read it and the question is perfectly valid, unless all that is new is screw-ups fixed and screw-ups created.
  • Just fix
  • no major known bugs yet! woohoo. lets see how it works. wonder if the store download fix will make apps download quick and not take 100 years.
  • No major bugs LISTED, you mean.... :)
  • Probably there's no 'major bugs'. Some bugs of course.
  • Does ayone know if you can assign custom text notifications yet? It's a big deal to me because I don't have time to answer every text while at work, certain messages must take priority. I have a Lumia Icon.
  • YAAAY! :D LET'S PARTY! Downloading!
  • So is this the build that's shipping on the 950/950XL? AKA the actual release build of W10 Mobile? Update: Missed the first paragraph that answered this :).
  • There is no "actual release" since it's a service but this should be the Build the public sees.
  • Im surprised they didnt realise it to slow ring gving that it is preinstalled on a retail device ???
  • Because the build is optimized for those devices, shipped with specific firmware, etc...
  • yes
  • My Lumia 959 that arrived 2 hours ago has this build
  • excuse me but u mean 950 or i miss a device there???
  • That's the Verizon version
  •  Did mean 950. Hit a pump in the road (in the passenger seat) and missed the 0.
  • Was it a bicycle tire pump or a gasoline pump? The difference could be rather stark.
  • Darn... You beat me to it.
  • i guess he is still getting used to the keyboard :'D
  • I'm curious, how well does 'Windows hello' work on the Lumia 950. I'm getting mine in a few days and was wondering
  • It works pretty good. Just need to put the phone closer to your face than I thought, other than that it works fast.
  • Thanks, nice to know. Fast enough for everyday, every-time-i-wanna-unlock-my-phone use? Last question. Does "double tap" to wake still (also) work on the 950? If so, we double tap then scan face? Nice :-)
  • At least on the Lumia 640, double-tap to wake the screen is still completely gone, whereas it was there on 8.1.
  • It does work on my Lumia 640 @build 10586
  • From what I can tell, there is no double tap to wake, unless it's just not on by default. As far as speed goes, it unlocks the phone in under 2 seconds.
  • Yes, it was mentioned in the first paragraph.
  • Whoops :).
  • Finally!!!! Update all the things.. Lol
  • yesssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my lumia 920 was born ready
  • Finally!
  • Going to try this on my 520, and if all good, 1020.
  • Likewise. My L625, followed by my L830.
"known issues" - two words that make me hesitate to put it on my daily driver.
  • downloading now
  • Is this RTM???
  • RTM should be ejected from your vocabulary as it has no meaning any longer. This is the shipping version as we noted in the article.
  • Should I be concerned about the first known issue mentioned in the article?..
  • Awesome reply. You sir made my day, lol.
  • But it's not yet available for download on windows phone 8.1 without using the Windows Insider app yet, right?
  • Correct, it is still an insider release. (i.e. Carriers haven't approved it yet, assuming that they even will.)
  • Nope... that's gonna take sometime...probably will roll out with firmware updates which might take a while...
  • Ok. so we now have confirmation that it is shipping without the quiet hours while busy in calendar that was in 8.1. Yay for microsoft, always keeping up with the competition!
  • Hey Daniel, you stated in your previous article on Build 10581 that you were unable to train Hey Cortana.  I'm still unable to do so on Build 10586.11.  Are you still having this issue as well?  If not, how did you fix?  Thanks.  NOLATechy.
  • but where to find Hey cortana in 10586. i have installed in L730. Not getting hey Cortana anywhere.
  • So if I've never gone on the insider program before I should be very unlikely to get into the restart loop right
  • is gonna work graet..if u see a black screen give it some time
  • I'm stuck on a black screen with just the Nokia logo  should I wait? A hard reset didnt help it either
  • Stil no RTM, but I am sure one small update like on desktop and they will make it happen soon.
  • What do you even mean by "no RTM"? This version is shipping on the Lumia 950 and XL. RTM no longer has a meaning, so I'm not sure what you are expecting.
  • I get what you're saying but to some this is RTM as in its the release to manufacturers. In this particular case, the new 950 devices. To me, (and I assume you as well) this is the first build to be publicly released indicating it is more stable than past builds.
  • But I wouldn't be at all surprised if this build never gets released to the public to upgrade WP8.1 devices. (Since that is at least a month away from what we have heard.)
  • I'm not so sure. I don't expect MS would send his flagship to customers with these "known issues" :)
  • Well the 950 & 950XL users do not have to worry about the first listed known issue as they will be starting from scratch. The other two known issues will not affect most users either as primarily developers will be the ones sending Silverlight apps to their devices for testing and the Hub likely does not show up in the first place for people to realize it disappeared, or is there but not working etc.
  • Hi Daniel, I was wondering if you can clarify this RTM matter - I assume those who mention RTM actually mean the OS release with firmware - like Denim earlier. Are we expected to see separate firmware release with Windows 10 Mobile, or will it just be OS updates?
  • The first of the known issues seems scary, anyone ran into this problem yet? Hesitating to do this update because of that... Edit: Nvm, just updated without any issue. Well done MS
  • You can roll back 8.1 than update
  • You don't have to roll back, if it gets stuck in a boot loop, do a hardreset as the article states. No need to rollback if you don't want to. I reset my 830 yesterday on 10581 so my phone will probably get the reboot loop. I am not going to wast time with another OS install, I'll just reset the phone after getting to 10586. It takes far longer to download 8.1, roll back, update to 10586 than to simply update to 10586 and reset the phone.
  • No Exclamation mark is coming to hard reset... I followed that article (Lumia 830)
  • Update : This worked for me ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgnXqSNF_K0
  • What lighting is that guy using? It makes him look jaudiced! Initially I thought he had yellow washing up gloves on
  • Hard reset didn't either work for me. Is there something else to do after you see the exclamation? Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • So true. And I'm going to want to do a reset for a nice clean install anyway, so... yeah. That's the ticket.
  • What are the key sequence for HW reset on lumia?
  •   1.hold power button till vibrate  2. vol down till ! 3.vol up  4 vol down 5.power botton  6. vol down
  • Same...
  • i got you man
  • I literally backed up 5 minutes before Gabe's release announcement. Downloading now...at 65% in seemingly no time!
  • Honestly, the quality of this build is going to what's going to be what determines me going and getting an iPhone 6s after being with Windows Phone since WM5. 10 mobile (unlike 10 for PC which I think is phenomenal) is just not up to snuff I don't think. Look at simple tasks like deleting a photo... takes forever. Apps constantly crash for no reason. The people who have their 950's in the forums don't seem super impressed with it, which is disheartening. I think this might be the end for me :( My wife just got the 6s after being with WP since v7. Neither of us like iOS but... it works and it has apps. And sadly, the Microsoft apps are generally better on iOS I've found. Anyways, let the down-voting commence.
  • Seriously dude, just make the move, the reasons for staying seem pretty flimsy honestly... =[
  • I've been using W10M for a few months.. its not the problem anymore. Your attitude towards it is. You said it yourself, you don't like iOS. I know people who have iPhones who complain about the bugs. The solution is simple: be happy with what you have. W10M is an amazing OS, and it works. Its not as bad as people make it sound, it just takes a positive look to see that instead of constant negativity.
  • I've been on the preview for a long time (I'm a WP app dev). I wanted to love it because I do love 10 on my PC and Surface Pro 3. My screen flickers on and off, phone crashes and reboots at least once a day (i do hard resets after reboots, which according to the release today is now going to cause even more problems since I did that.) I tried to convice myself I liked it, but it's just not ready.
  • Sorry you've had a tough time, but for the record, I've had none of those problems with my (soon to be retired) 920.
  • Since the last build I've had no issues what so ever, it doesn't crash on my 1520 and it runs smoothly. Previous builds were buggy and awful but that's the whole point in signing up for a beta programme.
  • As the others - never experienced such issues - so, sorry to hear you have. Presumably you've done hard resets and rolled back? Could be a handset issue - if you're anything like me yours is probably getting pretty dated by now?
  • Yeah, I've done a reset after each build. I'm on the 830 because my 920 met its demise :( So it should be new enough. As a dev this concerns me. First impressions are all that matters. If people upgrade their device to this OS and experience such silly problems, they won't hang around for long.
  • ".... because my 920 met its demise"
That's actually my way of politely saying "the ¥@¥#ing phone pissed me off and in a blinding fit of rage I thrashed it"
  • just switch my friend! there is no point in debating with people here in comments .. so if u dont like W10M, just switch for God Sake!
  • lol, you're a Dev and still complaining for a beta OS, you shud really switch, 10581 was perfect on my lumia 1520, never rebooted even once on its on, close to no crashes,.. hoping to have better experience with 10586, its been only 15 hours since i have it installed, didnt do a hard reset as i was so amazed with 10581's performance that i installed important apps etc that i dont want to start over with.
  • I would defer this decision till this gets an official release since that would come packaged with the required firmware.
  • Hey, we are in a democracy last time I checked so.  No harm if you decide to go iOS or Android.  I myself have 3 - WP, iOS and Android but I prefer WP.
  • Just do the switch. I did. Been with Windows phone since 7 but just couldn't take it anymore with everything that's been going with win 10m, so I got the moto x. It's worth it. So much better than
10 IMHO. Not trolling just telling my experience. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Of coarse it's your right to switch to another OS any time you want, BUT just to remind you: Windows 10 Mobile is not yet finished. These are Insider Previews - which I guess you actually know, since you are a developper for this platform. It is nothing abnormal that these Insider Previews are buggy and not ready yet for the public. Who am I to tell you not to switch yet. I don't have any right to. I just wanted to remind you, that you have not yet used a final version of Windows 10 Mobile. Before I switched to Windows Phone very recently, I used iOS myself and I have been very happy with it. So switching to iOS is surely not a bad decision. :)
  • Recall you are in the beta test program for the operating system.  Personally I am rebooting my phone less and less, meaning it is more and more stable (honestlly I reboot it more than I really need to).  Recent releases have had fewer front end bells and whistles as they are updates under the hood for stability.  If you had your choice, would you prefer MS development spend it's time on bells and whistles or stability?  There is a limited set of time and money so they can only focus on so many things.   Not sure why iPhone is your OS of choice if complaints of bugs is the bar to pass, as Android is an option as well (heck Blackberry is even an option).  Apps crashing isn't really a MS problem - crap developers that created your app are probaby more to blame than Microsoft.  while (fork() == fork())    ( fork(); ) I can call it a super cool game name, like Piggy Boink!, with a cute picture and you will download it all day long.  However it will probably kill your phone very quickly.  (My guess is that statement means little to you, my point being something simple can crash a phone)   Essentially, don't always blame the OS for your crash.
  • Where Samsung ativ support?
  • I was hoping for a change in the search UI. I believe the Win8.1 version was better, cleaner and faster.
  • I agree. In my experience Cortana was way faster on 8.1.
  • she also was exclusive to the phone then, now she is taking on the rest of the Windows population...cut her some slack, it's not Halo levels yet bro. =\
  • Its not the search execution as much as the user experience and UI there. General slugishness that I don't believe is server side.
  • Agreed, a lot about 8.1 was faster... and worked more reliable... but W10M is a much better interface and settings... it's all been said before I know
  • Since they are talking about "a future build" will this not be RTM? And if so, why are the L950 devices shipping with this?
  • There is no RTM ... Gowwdd... Now Daniel has to write another article regarding the same.. :D
  • The fact that there will be future updates doesn't mean this is not the Release To Manufacturers build, so RTM still stands
  • See Daniel's replies above. RTM doesn't exist anymore, this is the build shipping with the new Lumia's. Future build is just updates which will continually come out
  • You a first timer here? Jesus. There is no RTM... Think Windows as a service. Think differently. Grab your ears and pull your head out of your..
  • Upgrade phones might get shipped a newer build when it officially arrives. This build might be "rtm" for 950 but not necessarily for devices getting updated from 8.1
  • Downloading now!  After 5 minutes still at 0%.... Lots of folks hitting the fast ring I'm sure.
  • The fast ring is not that fast...
  • Downloading L1020
  • Hey! Did your Lumia Camera App remain in your app list? And is it still usable?
  • The fast ring has nothing to do with your internet speed, LOL, it took me 10 mins to download the update and abt 20 mins to install, which was very quick :P
  • Yay!
  • Not available in the UK yet (22.16). Edit: *Remembers to sign back in to Insider Program... *whistles and walks off
  • By the hardware combination (for resolving the reset loop) they mean the standard soft reset combo (power+volume down) right? I'm abroad for 5 days and don't have my PC here so resolving possible issues would be difficult, but I really want the update...
  • When they mentioned OOBE (Out Of Box Experience) they probably meant the button combo for a hard reset.
  • No, the hardware button combo he is talking about HARD resets your phone. A soft reset cannot resolve the reboot loop.
  • Gabe's original post has the text as a link to the reset steps page on https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8/settings-and-personalization/reset-my-phone
  • Thanks for this one! ;) Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • No they are saying you would need to do a factory reset using the buttons, and then restore. They linked to the article on how to do it: https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8/settings-and-personalization/reset-my-phone
  • No they mean the hard reset key combination.
  • Ok thanks! I'll report how it went :)
  • That first known issue sounds like a major one if I read it right. So it's saying that updating to this build it will throw you into the constant reboot? If that's the case, I would think they would want to get it resolved first. Am I out in left field with this?
  • Only if you did a hard reset after installing the previous build.
  • The problem is only if you did a factory reset in 10581. The corruption that 10581 casued is what causes the reboot loop, not the new build.  I don't think short of recovering to 8.1 or doing a factory reset after upgrading there is any way to fix it. So essentailly they are saying you have two choices: Backup, Upgrade, Factory Reset, then Restore Backup, Recover to WP 8.1, Restore, then Upgrade I factory reset one of my phones so I am in that process on it right now, my other phone didn't get factory reset so it is just upgrading
  • Makes sense. Thank you :)
  • How did the "Backup, Upgrade, Factory Reset, then Restore" process go?  I'm thinking about doing this.
  • It went just fine. Of course reinstalling all my apps is taking forever, but that is to be expected. And of course you have to re-authenticate most apps that you login to, and then there are the crappy apps/games that don't save your settings/progress. I think this build seems faster, and it is till downloading/installing in the background.
  • Yipee! Waited for this all week!
  • What is the size of this build
  • Preparing to install updates...at 2% for the last few minutes
  • Someone knows if this new build has any issues on games? Like StarWars: Commander, March of Empires or Terraria (any of these three)..
  • Let us download it first.. Can you please wait for sometime while we go through it :p
  • And I just did a factory reset on 10581 this morning...
  • Im excited to finally form an opinion on the finished product (I know it's never "finished", but I'll take the shipped version as done for now). So far I've been missing wp8.1 for it's smoothness.
  • This latest build is FAST. Even the previous one that was meant to massively improve speed still had lag vs 8.1 when doing things like opening the action centre. This new build is the first that properly follows my finger when opening the action centre without any lag just like 8.1. And I didn't even factory reset!
  • Latest as 10586?
  • No one seems to remember that you need upgraded firmware to give you that smooth experience. Something which does not come to insiders.
  • I really hope they fix performance with the camera in apps that aren't the default (such as Lumia panorama for example).
  • Ive reset on 10581 :o looping im coming..
  • Preparing to install updates...moving slowly along at 11%
  • I'm going to wait cause of OOBE.
  • Wait until when? If you did a factory reset in 10581 you are screwed and will have to do another factory reset after upgrade. (Or recover to WP 8.1, which is essentially a factory reset.)
  • Downloading now! The current build is already so fast and responsive on my Lumia 640 (so amazing for an $80 phone), so I can't image it getting much better :)
  • This build is the final version RTM?
  • RTM has never been the final version even in wp8 or 8.1. It's simply the build installed in the first win10 phones sold
  • I agree!
  • And the gears have begun spinning following a reboot
  • Damn 8gb storage on the 640 XL.  Ran out of space, hopefully i got that fixed now.  Seriously, 8gb is my only issue with this otherwise nice phone.
  • Yep, I ran into the same problem. Twice, so far. (Once at downloading, and again at preparing.) And because of the bug I can't use the Storage app to see how much I have free or anything. (I can't even connect it to my PC via USB.)
  • I managed to delete/uninstall enough stuff, so I got to the gears this time! WooHoo!
  • 640xl then 1520
  • Not seeing the update yet :/ No biggy. Ill have a 950 in two days!
  • Good!
  • Any fix for messages not being synced?
  • Now migrating data after one more reboot. Gotta say, this is the fastest and smoothest update process I've met with all the mobile insider builds, and I've been through all of them.
  • AWESOME! Upgrading my 1520, 640 XL, and 640 Dual SIM and hard setting them all afetrwards right now! SWEET! Can't wait for my 950 XL to get here on/after the 25th!!!!
  • Please let me know the performance on the Lumia 640, will upgrade post your inputs :)
  • LOTS of issues with apps not updating from the store and failing. On my 640, nearly a dozen. I'd wait until that's resolved.
  • W10 is not coming to my phone, which is on 8.1. If I want to have it, should I upgrade now and then opt out of the insider program?
  • You could do that ... or just wait a few weeks.
  • I mean that my phone isn't getting 10 at all, ever. It's still on Cyan and I doubt it'll ever get Denim.
  • Hi all
I went straight from Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 to
